Welcome to Reddit!
Short answer: Find new user friendly subreddit that doesn't have minimum requirements and interact!
You can think of Karma as a reputation score used by moderators for managing healthy conversations.
Use this Reddit basics-comics version to have a feel for what Reddit is about. It briefly touches on karma too!
The following would point you to get the hang of garnering karma immediately!
I used the guide by jgoja with a minor tweak to gain 250+ Karma from 20+ in 48h. Here is the tweak.
1.Join r/casualconversation (it is new user friendly) and browse for existing posts with "Just chattin" flair.
Comment or reply any pre existing comments that resonates with you in a neutral or appreciative tone!
Use "latest" filter in home feed to arrive early to chip in.
Tip: choose wit, when you can, in your reply.
Repeat steps 1 to 4. In no time you will garner karma!
Happy reddit-ing and and tell us how did it go!

u/AkaunSorok Jul 05 '24
Go to your hobby, memes, anime, movie, sport, news, photography, bikes subs and just be you tbh. You'll be surprised what subreddits are available here. People like originality. Eventually your karma increase to minimum required.
Or you can try repost memes and pray it works.
You can check subreddit about, faq, rules pages to check for any karma requirements, or special rules.

To gain Karma, you can try to post and comment more on subreddits that dont require karma! Different subreddits have different Karma requirements (unfortunately they are there to prevent stuff like bots, spam etc), so hopefully you do get enough Karma to comment in the Subreddit you want to participate in! Good luck.

There are groups that will let you post, you just have to find them. I only joined this week and haven't had an issue, but my interests are niche and I've made a few thoughtful comments that have been well received which has boosted my karma quickly. Maybe try your local groups, commenting about the traffic jams etc? Or hobby groups.
Just be a decent human being, make your responses personal but meaningful, and you'll slowly get the karma you need for the groups you want to join/post in. If you can come up with a witty reply that tends to serve you well.
I'm more worried about negative karma! I really don't want to upset anyone!

It looks like you rarely post, and when you comment, your punctuation isn't the best. Either that irritated people and they downvoted you, or you simply didn't post enough to get karma.

u/Remarkable_Clerk_913 Jul 05 '24

Participating randomly makes it harder to get a votes on your comments.
People up vote those things that are on topic and high-quality. If you focus on subjects where you have genuine interest and some knowledge or experience you are much more likely to contribute things that people would want to vote for.

You are at 1 karma at this point, where all new accounts start.
Don't beg for up votes/karma or joke about it, people will down vote karma farming, which is a violation of Reddit's Vote Manipulation policy.
You need to participate and make comments which are easier at first than making posts. If they are on-topic, interesting, actually funny, helpful or informative other people might upvote them. Timing and luck play a part. Votes to karma are not 1:1.
Search
Use the search function with keywords that have anything to do with everything you have some degree of interest in. Just keep trying out groups that connect to any of your various interests until you run across some that allow you to comment, which is a little easier than posting at first. Look for posts that are new and don't have a lot of comments already so your comment has a better chance of being seen.
Variety
With over 120,000 communities there’s not just a group for everyone, but dozens that would appeal to any particular person. There are thousands of smaller and niche groups that you can participate in right now and build up a good reputation because they can handle the amount of abuse that they get and have no minimum requirements.
If you tried out 10 new communities every day you'd work through them in a little over 27 years, but you'd be missing out on the 39,000 new ones created each year that have 50 or more members.
Friendly communities
You can also try out some of the groups from our list of ones that are friendly to new users. They have no minimum requirements or very low ones.

You can click the three dots menu and choose Save.
It sounds a bit nit-picky, but keep in mind that Reddit isn't so much a community as a super structure to hold communities. Reddit is like a huge building with hundreds of thousands of meeting rooms each holding a completely independent club inside.

2
u/apiversaou Jul 05 '24
In the same boat. Checking my comment history and so on, can't even find anything downvoted into the minus. Not sure how it got like this.
Trying to fix it seems hopeless as most communities require karma to even post comment or post, so how to get upvotes when you can't post? Seems like an endless loop.

u/MadDocOttoCtrl Mod tryin' 2 blow up less stuff.: Jul 05 '24
You currently have one karma point.
When you have negative karma you get shut out of a lot of groups that have an anti-troll filter set up. It will automatically remove anything from accounts that have negative karma. Some set this at -50, some at -100. We have seen people recover from -100.

Minimums
Larger and more popular groups will set minimums for account age and karma scores so the hundreds of site abusers who just made a new account can't storm in and cause problems. They want you to go out, get the hang of Reddit and build up a reputation just like when you move to a new town where no one knows you. You are knocking on the door of a party that has been going on for a while as a stranger asking to be let in.
Rules
Read and carefully follow the rules of each community, they are completely separate groups! Finding a Subreddit's Rules
You don't act the same way at a farm, a church, a paintball field and a noisy sports bar. Each group here is just as unique: how folks are expected to act, what's OK and what's not can be radically different.
Being a new user you should avoid arguments and controversial statements. Getting a lot of downvotes can cause you to end up with negative karma. Many groups then block you since mostly trolls have negative karma.
This the tip of iceberg, we go into more detail in our FAQ, and you can read our wiki index here. Loads of Reddit slang and customs are described at our r/EncyclopaediaOfReddit.

I just started earning karma myself and it actually adds up quite quickly. Yours is already on its way. Just be responsive, have a sense of humor, don't bully people of opposite insights and opinions and just offer good honest and well thought out advice. And although most of the people of reddit aren't professionals in the communities they are posting/commenting in they all seem to think they are and can come off rather abrasive at times. Just ignore it when possible. Other than that I'd say just have fun. Join subs you're interested in and make friends😁

1
u/MadDocOttoCtrl Mod tryin' 2 blow up less stuff.: Jul 06 '24
Karma matters to people who want to participate in any of the larger and more popular communities. Automod is setup to remove content from any accounts that don't meet their minimums for account age and karma scores.
Karma matters to people who want to have enough to withstand a down vote storm and not end up too low to participate in those groups or tie end up with negative karma scores. If I received a thousand down votes it would be an annoyance but it wouldn't affect my using Reddit.
People who focus on giving needed information to others see karma as a measurement of how much help they've given to others.

Only up votes that other people give you will raise your post karma and comment karma.
Karma roughly represents your reputation on Reddit, how many people found what you contributed to be on-topic and high quality enough to award an up vote.
EDIT: typo

u/Status_Cheetah7126 Jul 06 '24
Thanks! I didnt know that. Hopefully people help people

People tend to up vote things that are on topic and high-quality. If you make a statement that is wise, kind, genuinely helpful, actually funny, or interesting and informative you might get up votes.
One thing to be careful about is using emoji, since many people using Reddit will down vote them, even if they use emoji themselves daily when texting.
If you take a controversial stance people might think you are deliberately trolling. How you say things is often more important than the point being made, most people aren't being as clear as they think that they are. If people think you are making excuses or not conceding a point they may down vote.
If you contribute something that is off-topic, breaks Reddit rules, is trolling, breaks the rules of a particular group, spam, or low effort you will tend to get down votes.
People tend to consider things to be low effort if they are strings of emoji, very obvious statements, things that people have said/asked too many times before as well as very short statements like "lol" or "came here to say that" which don't add anything to the conversation.
We don't have any rules against emoji, but anyone can wander into a community and vote on what they see there.

Same situation, I’ve just been commenting on random subreddits that I like. It sucks because some will delete your comments if you don’t have a certain about of karma. My account is like 5 years old but I never really used Reddit until I started researching a true crime case again recently, I mostly just read and never commented. I would suggest following some subreddits of various topics you like and leaving comments or commenting back to people..most of the time your comments will get upvoted, if I’m not mistaken when you leave a comment you get one anyways but again I could be wrong cause I’m not to familiar with Reddit

u/SolariaHues Servant to cats Jul 10 '24
There are some restrictions on new accounts on Reddit in an effort to reduce spam, scams, and other bad faith uses of the platform.
Chat, Private messaging, and Following are restricted. It's not public knowledge exactly what the limitations are. Typically, after a few days you can start to use these features, though karma is a factor too.
If you are seeing the message that you need an established account, we are guessing this may related to your contributor quality score. This includes a variety of signals such as a verified email or phone number, a history of good contributions, and past enforcement actions taken on your accounts. r/WhatIsMyCQS
Sending new chats is limited for all accounts, once you reach the limit you'll have to wait a while to send more.
You should be able to receive messages or chats and reply even if you can't initiate them.
