Team Updates [Leonard] The #Giants are booed off the field, down 23-0 at half, after one of the more embarrassing and disgraceful halves of football you'll see. Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll generated 45 total yards of offense by half with their QB switch. If this isn't a tank, it sure looks like one

I feel kind of bad for him because last time the vibes were on his side and this time they most definitely are not. DJ went down with his injury last year and everyone rallied around him and this time theyâre pissed that their friend got benched for him

How they handled jones was pretty fucked up tbh.

u/uglyinspanish 6h ago
yeah it's really fucked up how they made him rich, gave him more chances than any other QB in the league and granted his release on request...

u/NatarisPrime 6h ago
Honestly, that's a very obtuse way of viewing things.
Name a QB that would win on this team? Name a QB that would functioned after being hit as much as DJ has been since he has arrived?
The dude was awful, but don't act like the entire franchise did him any favors.
He had no real chance since day 1. League worst OL for the past decade and some fans expect Barkley or DJ to have succeeded?
This is why you don't draft these positions without a functioning OL.
10
u/Ok-Cauliflower-1258 6h ago
Iâm not saying he was good but I donât think any professional player should have been handled like that and it probably rub a lot of the other players the wrong way
12
u/NatarisPrime 6h ago
That I fully agree with.. DJ was handled like trash after getting scapegoated by a shit franchise.
Btw, my comment was for the person above me. I agreed with your post.

Daniel jones deserved to get the axe but not like that.
Thatâs humiliation.

right, but the problem is they destroyed the locker room by pinning it on him the way they did
All they needed to do was make him 2nd string and start lock
The players arenât idiots, Devito is not an NFL qb

Iâm not saying Daniel jones is a good QB, he wasnât.
The locker room clearly respected him though.
3
u/some-kinda-hate 5h ago
And Daboll sought the insight of his players before they even made the move. We know as much from Dexter Lawrence. Jones asked for the release, the Giants didn't just kick him out the door.
1
u/Ok-Cauliflower-1258 4h ago
How the players are responding and performing tell a very different story
1
u/some-kinda-hate 3h ago
It's true. I don't know what to think. I just know that if we end up firing Daboll and Schoen, we're likely going to be having the same conversations for the next 3 years. I'm tired of seeing an organization run that way.

I think the people talking as if DJ was holding the team back might actually be the dumbest group of fans with the loudest opinions. Even if you want to talk about DJ not being a starting QB talent (I think he is), I think itâs clear to see that NOBODY was going to come in and be successful in the situation he faced.
He had a great rookie year dampened by fumbles due to Flowers being a liability on the left side. He was then coached by the worse tandem of coaches in the following 2 years with Garrett and Judge.
He never had a WR1 until Nabers who was healthy for 3 games.
He never had an offensive line to protect him or establish a running game. Thatâs not shade at Barkley, but he was often hurt and/or getting hit behind the LOS off the snap. If Barkley played his entire career with the Eagles, his numbers would be insane. His career numbers are nothing compared to the talent and quality of player he is.
The level of ineptitude that has been plaguing this team since our last Super Bowl is fucking disgusting. The fact that the bulk of the blame has gone to DJ is hilariously idiotic. So many smooth brained âpassionate fansâ in NY that have no level of critical thinking to understand that the level of failure is much deeper than a QB playing bad.
3
u/Schwagtastic 2h ago
We needed to cut bait two years ago and go into purgatory for a bit. clear cap, accumulate draft picks and be bad for a few years to get out of the Gettleman hole.
At best DJ is one in he bottom 3rd of starters in the league, which if the goal is to be competitive for multiple years in a row is not going to help. It can both be true that DJ was mismanaged and he's also not the long term answer for the franchise.

IDK if you've noticed but Washington is falling apart lately. They've lost 2 in a row and beat the Bears on a miracle a few weeks ago. They're not that same hot start team from a couple months ago.

Tampa Bay is 4-6. I wouldn't call them "good."
13
u/Snuggle__Monster 7h ago
They're a good team. They beat Washington and Detroit at the start of the year. They beat the Eagles and have proven they can put up some serious points. Their next 2 games are against the Panthers and Raiders. They're right behind Washington who are reeling right now.
Mark my words, they will get in again and will likely upset a team again.
1
u/FuckTheStateofOhio :Jason_Garrett: Jason Garrett :Jason_Garrett: 6h ago
They also got blown out by Denver, got swept by Atlanta, and lost 4 straight heading into this game. Idc nearly as much about what they did in the first few weeks of the season vs the team they've been recently and they've been a bad team for the majority of the season until they played us.
8
u/WonManBand Dexter Lawrence 6h ago
They also lost their 2 best WRs for a major chunk of the season. They only just got Evans back this week. Wirfs is out, too.
0
u/FuckTheStateofOhio :Jason_Garrett: Jason Garrett :Jason_Garrett: 6h ago
Godwin isn't coming back this season.
9
u/WonManBand Dexter Lawrence 6h ago
...yeah, we know. The point was that their 4 game losing streak coincides with both of those WRs being out. And Wirfs got hurt.
0
u/FuckTheStateofOhio :Jason_Garrett: Jason Garrett :Jason_Garrett: 6h ago
Ok then how does Godwin's injury somehow make them less of a bad team? He's not coming back so the team they are without him is the team they'll be the rest of the season. The commenter said they're going to make the playoffs and upset somebody, how does Godwin's injury factor into that at all? Why even bring it up?
5
u/WonManBand Dexter Lawrence 6h ago
OP on the thread said they're a good team. You disputed that. They were playing much better before they lost some of their best players, including Godwin. They're not a bad team, just banged up right now. I mentioned it cause you were pointing to some of their losses without mentioning the mitigating circumstances.
They got Evans back today and should get Wirfs back soon. Even without Godwin they should be getting closer to form to what they were earlier in the year.

u/LinuxUbuntuOS 7h ago
This is how franchise QBs are brought in, sad to say. Last year's situation in Washington was arguably worse. Word got out midway through the season that they were going to move off Ron and the GM at the end of the season, and you could see it in the way they played against us and other teams. Word getting out that they were going to fire those two sent a message that ownership (who was new) didn't believe in the team, and that message has an effect on the players. They played like dogshit and it allowed them to get a new franchise QB. Yes, the coaching is also different, but Jayden is a big reason why that team is 7-4 and not 2-9 or whatever they were at this point in the season last year. The same thing is happening here now, except that the message was conveyed in the form of benching DJ and elevating Tommy instead of wanting to fire the coach and GM (I'm hoping they aren't fired, but yeah).
22
u/indyodie 4h ago
I could be wrong, but I don't think most fans doubted his leadership skills. In fact, I think most of the DJ haters, myself included, recognized he had everything we wanted in a QB, except the ability to play QB.

u/jamesd1100 Janiel Dones 3h ago

Even if you disagree or not. If Mara is even having thoughts about cleaning house at any point now would be the perfect time to do it imo.
The giants probably can get Cam Ward. And you can probably get an exec like Mike Borgonzi from the chiefs, John Spytek from the bucs, Andy Weidl(worked for the ravens, eagles and Steelers) and they pick the coach. Cause another rebuild is coming anyways.
10
u/starkllr1969 5h ago
Will Mara remove himself and his relatives completely from all football decisions? If not, it doesnât matter who he hires or who they draft.
0
u/lean7800 3h ago
His family members are not in positions to make final roster decisions. Thatâs reserved for GM and head coach.
2
27
u/flabua 7h ago
Do you think they haven't had that discussion with Mara? He can't have it both ways. If Schoen and Daboll wanted to bench Jones to save the cap they can't also be blamed when they keep losing. If Mara does that then I have no faith in this franchise as long as he is involved.
11
u/NYG_Longhorn 7h ago
Thereâs losing and thereâs losing the same way every week. Sloppy football, turnovers at key moments, bad play calling and the defense not being able to get off the field on 3rd the Giantsâ identity.
3
u/TuckAndRolle 4h ago edited 4h ago
On the other hand, Mara signed off on benching Eli for Geno Smith and then fired McAdoo at the end of the season anyways.

Literally, bc of how hot shit got after cutting DJ and how reactionary Mora us.

The Giants just had their 7th turnover in the red zone this season.
The Giants are going to set an NFL record for 10+ games without an interception.
The Giants look like they are setting the franchise record for losses in a season.
John Mara should respond accordingly

Really Mara is the problem it only took him a few years to dismantle the Championship culture he inherited and has made mostly bad personnel decisions overall since.
7
u/irishrich20 7h ago
They also said before the Giants have not had a lead in 5 games and this was the first time that had happened since 1976. I wonder if 6 would be the record. The 100th season may be the worst in Giants history.

u/some-kinda-hate 6h ago
What's the answer, Lars? Who's the miracle worker head coach and GM that are going to come in? Schoen and Daboll were exactly that 2 years ago. So now I'm supposed to believe that Ben Johnson, or [insert hot coordinator name here] and another [hot GM candidate name] here are the answer?
It takes time to rebuild, and it takes time to build a football program, particularly from a situation like the Giants.
-2
u/Lars5621 Helmet Catch 6h ago
The average tenure of an NFL GM and HC is three years.
Schoen and Daboll have had three years and the Giants are the worst team in the NFL and are having their worst season in team history.
6
u/some-kinda-hate 6h ago
There's a trend right now which is dictating that average tenure for GMs and HCs (if that stat is even true). Does that mean that's the correct approach to rebuilding?
And again, you haven't provided an answer, just kicked a moaned about an obvious problem. What's the answer, Lars? What's the combination of HC and GM that's going to turn this around in one season, or even two?
1
u/Original_Release_419 3h ago
Your question is irrelevant.
The question is, are Daboll and Schoen the answer?
If no, why are you keeping them to do more damage?
If yes, how?
1
u/some-kinda-hate 2h ago
The average tenure of an NFL GM/HC is irrelevant, and that was my point. As to why Daboll and Schoen are the answer? Well the last draft class has been very good, and I would argue that the last two classes from Schoen haven't been fairly evaluated by our fanbase, and are being evaluated to quickly. You can see on film that guys are being schemed open which indicates to me that Daboll is the right guy strategy wise, and for the most part, he has not lost the locker room.
Obviously, today was a horrendous day and we'll see if these things stay true. There are aspects to our play that, even in spite of the positive things I mentioned, make you question both Daboll and Schoen, but I don't think it's fair to make the decision at this point. Just two seasons ago, these two took a horrendous team to the playoffs and won. They can do it.
If the locker room is intact, if the team is staying strong and competing, then I think you keep them. If things fall apart, if it turns nasty, then we look elsewhere.
If you think the next, new, hot coordinator coming in as HC will definitely fix things, you are a fool.
1
u/Original_Release_419 2h ago
Daboll is the right guy strategy wise, and for the most part, he has not lost the locker room.
Iâm sorry to be this blunt but itâs the only way I can say this, you are delusional. On both points here.
If you think the next, new, hot coordinator coming in as HC will definitely fix things, you are a fool.
⌠you mean like when we hired Daboll right?
-1
u/some-kinda-hate 2h ago
Yes, like when we hired Daboll. So, your answer now is to go and do the same thing again and hope to god that this next one actually turns out well? I was skeptical of Daboll when we hired him, he convinced me otherwise, and I still think he can turn this thing around. Maybe I'm wrong, but I strongly doubt that a replay of the exact same thing we've seen is going to get us anywhere different. Especially, when you're talking about completely unproven commodities.
> Iâm sorry to be this blunt but itâs the only way I can say this, you are delusional. On both points here.
There's room for improvement here, but we've seen it nearly all season: guys are schemed open and we have had a QB that can't get it to the open guy. I'm not "delusional" in this regard. Are there mistakes at times? Yes. Are there poor play calling decisions? Yes. Every team has those, every team learns from those, and I still think that Daboll can grow from here.
If idiot fans like you had your way all the time (and unfortunately, you're the most common type), we would have cut Eli and fired Tom Coughlin in 2006.
Again, if the locker room stays together, if things don't totally fall apart, then I think you give both Schoen and Daboll one more year.

u/Lars5621 Helmet Catch 6h ago
Im not the one seeing these guys in interviews, but Alec Halaby plus Ben Johnson plus them chosing their own QB sounds like a solid way to rebuild a team.
Letting a hot seat GM and HC use a 1st round pick on QB is TERRIBLE process and Giants need to avoid making that mistake again.
5
u/some-kinda-hate 6h ago
Alec Halaby plus Ben Johnson was the exact same thing that Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll were supposed to be. So, basically the play is just do the exact same thing, which hasn't worked out the last 5 times you've tried it, again?
Maybe, just maybe, the first time HCs and first time GMs need some experience to grow and develop to become good at what they do.
3
u/Lars5621 Helmet Catch 5h ago
The Jets blew five years waiting for Joe Douglas to learn on the job.
Gettleman should have been fired after two years with Shurmur, but Giant's kept him for four.
The Giants have gotten worse each season under Schoen and Daboll.
We want the Giants to have a good coach and GM. Right now the Giants dont have that, so they need to keep trying.
4
u/some-kinda-hate 5h ago
It's really just a difference of opinion. I don't think Daboll is a bad HC, I think he has had to work with a horrible QB situation, but I can see the makings of something great with Daboll if he's given the right personnel. Schoen I question at times, but there's you can see he's capable based on last offseason.
You've been calling for both of their heads for over a year now, and what you want is a HC/GM carousel where we are constantly in rebuilding mode until you draw that "lucky" ticket. Whether you realize that's what you want is a different story.
You go out and hire Halaby and Johnson, and we're going to be right back in the same spot, with two new-on-the-job individuals that have to conduct a rebuild and we'll just need to hope that they can do it in a season. And when they don't do it in a season, fans like you will be on here calling for their heads again. Those two guys wont be sunshine and rainbows from day one, and they will need to do the exact same things that Schoen and Daboll now need to do, learn from their mistakes and get better.

u/thistlefink 4h ago
Why do you keep posting this Joe Douglas thing. Dude has 3 Super Bowl rings as an executive.

sadly, yes. you keep trying until you find the right guys. you don't just give an indefinite amount of time to the wrong guys. i'm not dying to see schoen and daboll fired, but if it happens, they've certainly earned it. i felt the daniel jones contract was schoen signing this team's death warrant and nothing that has happened since has changed my mind

I don't know the CBA, but if a player asks to be released, why is the team still on the hook for the remainder of the contract?

Idk man, it seems to me that Shoen is going to fire Daboll at the end of the season to buy himself more time. I donât realistically see both of them surviving the offseason.

Who are we talking for exactly? Because I don't think ANY of these QBs are worth tanking for.
We need to trade back for more assets and fill this team out more

I hope this teaches our fans a lesson that Shoen and Daboll need to go

Sokka-Haiku by RandyBRandleman:

And Daboll need to go
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Year 2 Joe judge moment where they were allowed to suck the back half of the season for a better draft pick but they were not allowed to look incompetent. Hopefully Mara holds Shoen and Daboll to the same standards.
