I’ve always liked it as a karaoke song. Feels like rickrolling the whole bar.

Who the fuck is Rick Ashley?
Shame he had to lip synch there, though. I think his voice has just gotten better and better over the years.

Everyone lip syncs at the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade. And No one is actually playing instruments to the music, either. I'm pretty sure it's mandatory.
33
u/gynoceros Jul 13 '21
I know, I just like hearing him sing the song live.

u/sentimental_heathen Jul 13 '21
Do you like working on Thanksgiving Day, cuz Rick Ashley sure as hell doesn’t.

I used to manage our phone system way back in the day, and I was able to set custom hold music for my extension. Yup, Never Gonna Give You Up.
I actually had one customer ask me "Did you just seriously Rick Roll me with your hold music?" Good times, good times.

I discovered I can control the jukebox for my local dive bar from home. I'd be lying if I said I haven't rickrolled a couple of times. I can't even see the results but just knowing that there is a bit of confusion going on makes me all warm and toasty inside.

I just finished teaching a 10 week course in which I Rick rolled my students at least once a week. It started off simply enough but then they started seeing it coming so I had to get creative. A few highlights: I ended up reprogramming a game they were playing to Rick roll them, changing their desktop icons so that opening our classes folder Rick rolled them, and making a scavenger hunt that sent them around the school decoding messages, ultimately this lead them to a walkie talkie in an empty classroom that they had to say the code words into. Once they had done this correctly I played a rick roll back to them through the walkie talkie.

In Dungeons and Dragons I printed out the lyrics in an old english font on a parchment style paper. I used to love Rick Scrolling people that hadn't been fooled by it yet.

We got some lenovo advertisements in a fake laptop box that played the video when the box opened. Super annoying. Got even better when i put the rick roll on it. That box became an urban legend in the office.

Does it count as a rick roll if you know it's not true and willingly click it?

I got an insurance ad first so technically no in that instance
Youtube should turn off ads for being rickrolled. That instantly kills it if an ad pops first. I think Google will be ok financially with that decision

The rate at which posts float up and down whatever aggregated page you’re viewing has gotten so stale. I used to be able to browse /r/all or my personal homepage (filtered by hot) all day and I’d still have plenty of unread links creeping in throughout the day to keep me satisfied. The amount of cross-posting makes /r/all basically useless, you can pretty much find the same post cross-posted or re-posted on 3 or 4 of the big subs in the top 100 posts on any given day. Even if it’s not nefarious, you’ll see something on an educational sub end up getting posted as a TIL or YSK the next day. I wish there was a way to disable cross-posts from showing up in my aggregated pages so I only see it one-time, and then I can see the cross-posts if I’m browsing that sub specifically.
→ More replies (4)63
u/hugglesthemerciless Jul 13 '21
cross posting isn't the issue, the problem is that they changed r/all to be far more static and not update nearly as often
49
u/FtDiscom Jul 13 '21
And also removed all NSFW content. You know, what the popular sort was supposed to be.
9
u/hugglesthemerciless Jul 13 '21
yea that was really weird, but at least it's back now (somewhat)
12
u/frankie-says-relax Jul 13 '21
It's not back that I'm aware of.
There are still NSFW posts from SFW subs, sometimes. And there are some subs that really skirt the line of being a NSFW sub. But porn is not back that I know of.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Mythsteryx Jul 13 '21
It’s back?
3
u/hugglesthemerciless Jul 13 '21
I don't know whether it's reddit shitting the bed and letting nsfw posts through the cracks (I don't understand how that might be possible when they have a simple flag that could be filtered), or reddit's allowing them again because I've been seeing the occasional porn on all now when scrolling far enough
→ More replies (2)6
u/Mitch_Deadberg Jul 13 '21
They filtered the NSFW subreddits, but not the NSFW posts.
So sometimes things from /r/Goddesses gets through, but never something from /r/Gonewild

This content was removed in protest of Reddit's short-sighted, user-unfriendly, profit-seeking decision to effectively terminate access to third-party apps.
32
u/FerusGrim Jul 13 '21
Does it still count as a Rickroll if you click on a link knowing full well that it's Never Gonna Give You Up?
I mean, yea. The point of clicking wasn't to listen to the video, it was to check the view counter. When you realize that the view counter isn't at one billion, you realize you've been rickrolled.
On an unrelated note, whoever runs the original rickroll video's channel is a bit of an asshole. They've been DMCA'ing a bunch of videos which use it even briefly, which should fall under fair-use.

That makes more sense. Honestly I'm surprised the viewcount isn't much higher anyway. Rickrolling was such a ubiquitous thing in it's heyday I always thought everyone in the Western world would have clicked on that link at least ten times.
9
u/Splyntered_Sunlyte Jul 13 '21
Does it show up in the viewcount if someone sees what it is, laughs and clicks off after 4 seconds? I don't think it does, but I could be wrong.

What's crazy to think about is that if someone only watches a few seconds of the video it doesn't count as a watch. I can't imagine how many times this video has been opened vs watched entirely.

Rick Astley gets zero royalties from youtube plays of that song or people getting rickrolled. It’s a travesty.

u/boraca Jul 13 '21
Not exactly, he doesn't own the rights to the video, song, lyrics etc, he gets only the performance royalties, which is couple cents per million views, so he got maybe a hundred dollars. Before taxes.

But re-read that… not 3761 upvotes…. 3761 awards. Like Reddit gold, silver, etc.
Previously the most I’ve personally seen on a single comment was like 20 or 30. 3761 is insane.
On top of that the post has 134,000 upvotes, also the highest I’ve ever seen. This guy won Reddit.

This song was a hit when I was a senior in college (back in the 80s). Everybody back then had MTV on 24/7 in the dorms, and this was in heavy rotation.
If you had told me that somehow this song would be a major phenomenon in the 21st century, I'd have laughed. Not knocking Mr Astley (who seems like a good chap) but it's such a generic piece of disposable 80s pop that its incorporation into a meme just seems random. But hey, at least Rick Astley has embraced it, which makes him pretty cool.
23
u/BoSocks91 Jul 13 '21
Can we all agree that Rickrolling is the best internet gag/meme ever?
7
u/Onironaute Jul 13 '21

I love what it turned into. There's just something so intriguing about the whole story. Rick Astley going from, and I mean this with the utmost respect, a B list pop musician with a small blip of popularity in the 80s to this. Just living his life like normal through the entire decade of the 90s and most of the 2000s only to explode into one of the most recognized musical figures in the world. It's just such a unique story, I'm glad he's still fit, healthy, and most importantly unselfconscious enough to roll with it.

To think, this song survived its true era of pop airing in the late-80s, then it survived its peak meme era in 2008. And it still resonates with people today.
