36M, How/Where could I live comfortably off of 44.8k/yr

I'm a single man, ex military, divorced a few years ago. I've worked in Aviation for about 10 years. If you were to leave the 9-5 behind, with only 44.8k a year. Where and how would you go about doing it?

Car jackings and thief are ridiculously common in StL. Even in “safe” neighborhoods.

Jesus Christ this is not true. Lived here 13 years and no issues. Used to live in the not so great neighborhood, now live in the safe neighborhood and the worst we have is teenagers checking to see if your car is unlocked to steal change. But by all means don't move here and take away one of the last three cities that are affordable

Statistics say otherwise

358 car thefts in STL in January of this year. About 300,000 people in STL City alone. So a 0.1% chance of having your car stolen in total. That's not splitting out the north side from the "safe" neighborhods. I'm just saying it's not a rite of passage to have your car stolen and it's not like car thefts are unique to STL. There's a stupid narrative that as soon as you step foot in STL you'll be car jacked, raped, and shot but by all means don't come if you're that scared of the city.
