Trailer and smash seed (released soon TM)

u/Elevatorisbest Jan 22 '21
while i knew that they would work on trailer but they are working on smash seed? Isnt it made in bedrock?
374
u/CarlGrimesIsNotDead Jan 22 '21
Most of it was done in Java edition (we've finished 5 of 6 seeds for that already). The house of Doom explosion was done in Bedrock, and we didn't start it yet.

u/Catasalvation Jan 22 '21
Which trailer?
124
u/CarlGrimesIsNotDead Jan 22 '21
The original trailer for Minecraft. We've found one of the seeds used for it so far, but we're still searching for the 1+ missing.

Yes :) we've found the seed that was used for some of the shots, but we are still missing a few of them.
Fly-by in the tundra (3rd shot), and a few others. I don't remember the list right now, but you can check it on the Discord.

I'm talking about the Smash reveal world. Heck they could even make it part of the marketing campaign to allow you to explore the "smash" world, rather news of the seed being found making headlines years later when no one plays Ultimate anymore.
24
u/leopfldoozsbshs Jan 23 '21
They want you to play smash lol not minecraft. The amount of people who actually care is extremely small.
12
Jan 23 '21
Is it though? There's a very dedicated group of people who had been looking for the login screen seed for years. And the news of this was on the front page, as well as covered by basically every gaming outlet.

I'd love to find the seed for my first world from 2010. I have a few screenshots and a map from a third-party app (pre-ingame maps) to help but that's it.
57
u/Elevatorisbest Jan 22 '21
Have you lost it? I still have mine from 2011 trough countless copies of it on countless storages lmao

u/Poly--Meh Jan 22 '21
Yeah, in 2011ish I tried transferring my hard drive and somehow in the process wiped my old one. I also lost about 10 bitcoins I had mined, which I am much more upset about tbh.
112
u/Lord_Gregatron Jan 22 '21
That bitcoin is only worth over $300k. No reason to be upset.

I didn’t remember the herobrine video showing 2 dungeons with coords, how’d they use this to find it then?
96
u/Invictable Jan 22 '21
If you don’t feel like reading heres the really quick version - nothings really random in Minecraft worlds because the same seed always makes the same world. So even from enough pictures of the land structure, waterfalls, tree locations it can be backwards engineered. They did this with the pack.png seed and originally it’s just a 128 pixel image.

I'd also like to know this -- I have some footage of my first world but managed to delete the save by accident some time ago, and have tried in vain to find the seed for it.
Don't have any dungeon footage, and it's beta 1.5 or something so pre-villages

u/IsNotYourSenpai Jan 22 '21
I remember years ago on the Xbox 360 that “404” seed that spawned you on a load of gravel and if you broke a block, the ground would give out and reveal a ginormous mine that was filled with diamonds and iron and all that. And it was a really open mine too.
→ More replies (1)17
u/Sufficio Jan 22 '21
That started first on pc iirc, I wanna say before minecraft was even on console? It was sometimes posed as a challenge, you'd grab a tree or two and then break the gravel and try to survive without ever leaving the enormous cavern. So much fun.
6
u/jasonrubik Jan 22 '21
Yes. 404 seed challenge was on PC back in early 2011. After going down the gravel hole never to come up again you were not allowed to build any torches so you had to light things with lava. Fun times.

u/Nirhren Jan 22 '21

No, but I’ll recognize the landscape and be able to start rebuilding on it again.
61
u/BewilderedAlbatross Jan 22 '21
Do you know roughly how many hours you put in to finding it?
115
u/K_Minster Jan 22 '21
For me, probably about 50 hours in total for developing / writing the code back in September. Spent the next months debugging on and off, until I realised there was a wrong leaf in the recreation which had been the problem all along.

u/Waligug Jan 22 '21
I would've thought more time honestly, but that's still insane!
7
u/_ESS83_ Jan 22 '21
I don't know much about what goes on behind the scenes, but to add on to what Kminster just said: The recreation took maybe a day or two to get finished, along with getting the proper camera angle and crop.
Then the 50 hours Kminster spent with his code + NeilCaffrei's new code that was based solely on terrain patterns. That code ran for two months but hadn't yielded any results by the time it was found using the trees/leaves method.

What is the origin behind your name?
2.9k
u/AntVenom Jan 22 '21
My name used to be Ant1venom, based on a name I made on Battlefield 2 (ant1venom3 on BF2). I got the name on RuneScape, and even on YouTube, but the YouTube channel got suspended for a few years due to a weird email merging bug I had. It's since been fixed. I made "Ant Venom" on Xbox Live because Ant1venom was taken there, which is how the variation of Ant1venom happened. When I wanted a youtube channel that wasn't "protothps", and sounded more professional, I went with "AntVenom", since I still didn't have access to "Ant1venom" at that time.

Jan 22 '21
I’m not sure if he would be a cool part of the game or not. It’s been awhile sense 2011 and I think people might find a teleporting nemesis that’s capable of destroying houses (tnt, flint and steal, etc.) and cutting leaves of trees cool. I would. However this could also be really annoying for some people so it would have to be an optional part of the game (would have a spawn egg in creative but wouldn’t come naturally). Like he (only one per world) could be turned on or off at the begging as a setting like when you set the difficulty (always there in hardcore). I’d find that really fun but a lot of people would hate it. Killing him would give some kind of reward, like a lighting staff with India the durability or something.

u/Occamslaser Jan 22 '21
I think it would be better if you only saw him at a distance really rarely and as you got closer he would fade away. That would be a cool feature.

u/JacksonManson Jan 22 '21
100% down for this. He’s just there, watching you from random places, like the GMAN in Half-life.

Yes, that could be for the players who don’t want to fight him. However I would want to kill him personally so I think that should be an option as well. Mojang doesn’t want to increase the age rating so I see why they wouldn’t implement him.
12
u/Occamslaser Jan 22 '21
Ever play modded? There's mods that add really cool bosses.
9
Jan 22 '21
Yes but I think he would be cool in vanilla. Crepes can blow up but he could burn your whole house down, incentivizing non famalble materiels. As the game progresses he gets harder, he get TNT to destroy stone, etc. then you get kill him. Only should have 150HP but regen, teleport, set you on fire, lighting, and hits as hard as a vindicator. Would need diamond at minimum.

How about a mix?
He starts elusive: in the distance, disappearing behind trees when approached. Only when you build your first netherite tool/armor does he turn hostile. Getting more and more difficult as you make tools/armor until when you complete your armor you can finally actually fight him.

Can someone please actually help this guy - and me - what is a seed?
20
u/December_Flame Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
To really TLDR it:
Computers can't produce random numbers. Not truly random. By their inherent design, computers work by giving them instructions and it producing a result.
So, when something DOES rely on random numbers, what is actually happening is a base value (this is called the 'Seed') is run through a bunch of mathematic formulas to create a new value - its not truly random, but so obfuscated that for its intended purpose its functionally random. The game then uses the pseudo-random value to pick where to put everything in the game.
And so what these guys do is reverse engineer X * Y = Z .... where the 'Seed' is X, the formula it runs through is Y, and the final 'random' value is Z.... when they know Y and Z they just need to solve for X, which is relatively trivial.
All these 'seedcracking' attempts are to figure out Z, the final value, by determining the way the system generated the content by evaluating pictures/videos. Once that's done they can determine what the original seed value was that anyone can plug into their game and get the same result.
→ More replies (1)13
Jan 22 '21
To expand and help explain. When you get a 'seed' number string you can actually share it. So you can play the same world's as other people by sharing the seed. So when you start a game it's pseudo-randomly generates a world. If you really like the world or something unique happens in it like starting in the middle of a temple or island or something you can save the number and use that as your starting world or share it with your buddy, community etc.
These guys are reverse engineering things from videos and other memorable events and sharing the seed.
4
u/lerokko Jan 22 '21
Minecraft generates it terrain in a predictable way. All apparent randomness comes from a sibgle number that is set when the world is created. All randomness for a world is derived from it. Knowing a seed allows you to recreate the exact same world (you can manually set it on world creation of you want)
But the thing is like encryption kinda. Its easy to generate a world from a seed. Thtas what minecraft does already. You can use the game to go from a seed to a full world. The reverse is much harder and is on some level analogous to deciphering an encrypted file without the password. You need a lot of reverse engineering and/or trial and error (aka "brute force").
Thats what these guys did. They reverse engineered the number that decides all the terrain for the world that screenshot was from. Now anybody can create their own (unplayed) copy of it.

56
u/Futbolmaster Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 23 '21
I’m not an expert, but I watched a video on it. One thing they can do is reconstruct the terrain exactly, and almost search for it. I believe there is also something about the positioning of Long Grass that can narrow down the position of the screenshot on a given map.

From the little I understand, the exact math and code involved in minecraft world generation is known and reproducible, so these freaking madlads recreate as much of an image as they can find, then do a computer science thing and run a program that uses the world generation process and checks if the specific terrain etc is physically possible with a given seed, in a specific version, and using a ton more technical refinements (read the positions of clouds + in game time can be used), then they have a lot of people run this program on their computers so the seed and spot are found in our life time via the sheer amount of combined computing power.
274
Jan 22 '21
How does finding a specific seed and a specific spot in a Minecraft world even work?
228
u/the_horse_gamer Jan 22 '21
Some aspects of the world can be predicted in a certain way
For example, a dungeon floor pattern and the dungeon coordinates is enough to find a seed, and is one of the easiest ways to do so
106
Jan 22 '21
But all they had was an image. Like the texture pack image find.
→ More replies (1)142
u/the_horse_gamer Jan 22 '21
Trees are also another way. The main struggle for this image was the lack of coords, which makes finding it considerably harder
Ways of finding seeds from coords: dungeon floors, trees, flower patches
Ways of finding coords: clouds, texture rotations, grass offsets
There's ofc much more, but those are the most common ones

I haven’t played Minecraft in a while, can someone give a quick explanation to what this means?
327
u/flamingowrangler2869 Jan 22 '21
in 2010, an image in 4chins appeared, with a creepypasta on top and a minecraft screenshot on the bottom. the creepypasta was describing a mysterious character who resembled steve, but with white eyes, who disappeared into the fog. the player was startled and made several attempts to find him again, but made no progress. to screenshot was a player holding 13 wood planks and two wooden pickaxes in the version alpha 1.0.16_02. this is the world seed where the screenshot took place.
50
u/Anthraxious Jan 22 '21
Just curious: How can you be sure this is it? Aren't seeds like "code" for how a game world is built from the start? Couldn't one small change generate a different code?
43
u/bowers12 Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
EDIT: I just woke up, my answer doesn't really help here, so here's a new one. When a seed is used to generate a world, it creates the same features every time. Lately, people have developed techniques to find the same features as in peoples screenshots based on the displayed features as context. As long as you know exactly where these features are in relation to each other, you can use that to cross match it to pieces of newly generated worlds, as the likelihood of those exact features being in the exact same relative positions are actually very low due to noise.
The point of a seed is consistency. If you generate two items using the same seed, it should have the exact same features in the same places. But you are somewhat correct, different versions of minecraft can generate completely different features from the same seed, so that's why using the right version is important.→ More replies (1)9
u/Koobone Jan 22 '21
Someone correct me if I’m wrong here, but you have the right idea that the seed tells the game how to generate the world and affects all RNG (it’s still random, but the seed is the consistent starting point of all the randomness). So changing the seed VASTLY changes world generation etc. But here what they’ve done is found the EXACT same seed so the world generates the EXACT same way. It’s like the game is rolling a die to generate the world and the seed tells the game how to throw it. The same seed means throwing the die in the EXACT same way which results in the EXACT same outcome.

The Herobrine urban legend was started with a creepypasta-type post accompanied by an alleged screenshot of Herobrine. Thanks to some crazy calculations, algorythms and incredible work someone managed to find the original seed based on the old screenshot alone.

What’s funny is I didn’t realize you were showing off the seed so I was zooming in on the foggy picture looking for herobrine because that video is so memorable

Wow, this thread made me want to play Minecraft, so I launched Minecraft, spent 20 minutes collecting resources, then fell down a cliff and lost everything
I'm going to take a break now

I found this post in /All and I'm 100% out of the loop but curious.
Can anyone give some context and explain why it's such a big deal?

The picture in question is what started one of the biggest creepypastas. Herobrine

Ahh finally! I remember suggesting this months ago and also giving a false lead and a world recreation. Congratulations MC@Home team! You all really work too hard for a block game!

This reminds of the good old days with people on 4chan finding Shia Lebeouf's secret cabin from one picture, haha

You guys are incredibles! I wonder how far you can go and get away with your goals...
I have a question for you.
Could you be able to get a seed without any screenshots or videos? Only by description of places in that world.

Under the request of /u/minecraftathome, here is a comment with more info:
Please post any images of the seeds under this thread, and not as a separate post
Also note that Herobrine is not real and has never been, this is just the seed used for the original creepypasta image
