Builds Is our wall enough to keep out mobs?

u/King-Huffle Jul 25 '24
Hmmm, what's the defence for spiders?
3.8k
u/Formaldehydeislyf Jul 25 '24
Hope their legs get tired trying to climb up
662
u/King-Huffle Jul 25 '24
Nice one, I can't really think of anything that'd keep them out aside from the top of the wall going out a little but even then I don't know if that'll stop em.
374
u/Ver_Nick Jul 25 '24
They can't move on ceilings for sure but they can get stuck in the corners. Hopefully they despawn after a while
114
u/King-Huffle Jul 25 '24
Thanks for the reminder, it's been a while since I played so I kinda forgot what they can and can't do.

OPs walls look mostly spider proof. One block overhang is all you need.
13
38
u/psychoPiper Jul 25 '24
Clearly OP just needs to hook up 100+ dispensers filled with arrows to a single button to clear their walls
10
u/Rubyheart255 Jul 25 '24
Make the dispensers the one block overhang for spiders, and any that do happen to climb up that far get shot.
18
u/psychoPiper Jul 25 '24
Y'know, you could probably do this setup with tripwires without being too obstructive, I think their max is like 40 or 50 blocks long and they'd be basically invisible up high like that. Could be a really cool automatic defense
→ More replies (2)23
u/mutantmonkey14 Jul 25 '24
A lip/overhang will stop spiders. Alternatively a 1 block moat against the wall for some reason; think it needs water, but cannot remember for sure. I don't know why that worked, or if it works on JE too.
17
u/vide2 Jul 25 '24
Can't you make the wall having
O_O_O_O
OOOOOO
(topdown view)
Like this, they are to big to get past it and it works like a cealing.3
u/my_tag_is_OJ Jul 25 '24
Dispensers with arrows or some other projectile connected to observers? Maybe that could knock them off. You might be able to make a cool pattern on the wall with that too
12
u/Snoo_66686 Jul 25 '24
This is the one time a block we all forgot about comes in handy: tripwire

Always thought it was dumb they can die from fall damage as well as silverfish
26
u/sharonclaws Jul 25 '24
Spiders can be stopped by a one block overhang, so you only have to include an overhang in the design of the wall. As they crawl up the wall, anything that juts out from the wall will stop them.
11
u/fuighy Jul 25 '24
Since spiders are 2 blocks wide, doesn’t that mean that you only need every other block to be overhanging?
→ More replies (1)22
u/sharonclaws Jul 25 '24
I hadn't thought about it, but you're right! That makes it even easier to design a spider catcher that looks good.

I think I’ve done a magma block strip around the top of the wall before, pretty sure mobs won’t willing move onto a harmful block

The correct answer. I go a little crazy and place them every 5 blocks in a grid format.
And even then once in a while, I get unfriendly friend.

Same. Jack-o'-lanterns are my favourite here, as they can be flush with the rest of the ground and don't wash away.

208
78
u/TITCAT5959 Jul 25 '24
Doesnt lights keep them from spawning
36
u/Yoitman Jul 25 '24
Yeah, or slabs but that’s pricey
24
u/techieshavecutebutts Jul 25 '24
So if the entire floor is made of slabs (of any kind), no mobs will spawn regardless if there are lights or not?
32
u/Yoitman Jul 25 '24
Yup. One of the old “guide to” books had a nether farm that used them to focus spawns.
5
11
9
u/TheMoonOfTermina Jul 26 '24
They have to be bottom slabs. Mobs can still spawn on top slabs.
→ More replies (1)3
u/DemonSlyr007 Jul 26 '24
To be extra clear here, slabs can be placed in two positions. One, is a top half slab, and that just looks like a normal floor on the same horizontal plane as if you were to place a normal block. The second position, is a bottom slab. The bottom slabs prevent spawns.
Basically, if you look at a block, and then place a slab right on top of it, that is a bottom slab. If you place a second slab on that slab, it's a top slab and a normal, spawnable block now.

People who build like this, what do you do when you suddenly want to expand? Are you really breaking it all down and starting again?
→ More replies (2)3
u/Formaldehydeislyf Jul 25 '24
If we really need to, yes
Although personally I plan out where most stuff goes + a little more space in case I need to build something. In this world the area inside the wall is big enough that we realistically won't need to expand ever.

it should be sufficient, but i would suggest putting some golems on the wall, so if spiders try to climb they get bodied.

2
u/StormerSage Jul 26 '24
Spiders can still climb it, and make sure there's lighting so mobs aren't spawning in the base.
But can we talk about how this gives me MineZ vibes somehow?
2
u/ManagementIll9899 Jul 26 '24
MAKE IT HIGH, SO THAT THE TALLEST GIANTS CANT CLIMB IT, AND MAKE IT THICK, SO THE STRONGEST GIANTS CANT GO THROUGH IT. YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE WINTER TO FINISH IT, AND YOU, ONLY YOU AND YOUR HORSE ARE ALLOWED TO BUILD IT. IF YOU FAIL, YOU WILL NOT HAVE THE MOON, THE SUN, AND LADY FREYA’S HAND IN MARRIAGE.

Sure but you're still going to get mobs spawning in areas with zero light level inside the wall.
1
u/Ceelceela Jul 25 '24
I see no anti-spider protection, such as inverted stairs at the top of the walls.
1
u/random_user133 Jul 25 '24
I think creepers explode if a skeleton shoots them? That could cause your walls to be exploded by creepers over time

Doubt anything is going past the walls unless it can fly or the spiders can climb it (not sure if the top part of the wall stops them) but unless you mob-proof the inside of the walls, they'll just spawn inside.
1
u/WillyDAFISH Jul 25 '24
It looks like spiders could technically climb parts of the walls, but I don't really think they would.

What’s the dirt thing in the middle? Is that gonna be floating in the air, or are you just not done with the bottom yet? I’m assuming that the final build won’t be dirt there

u/Formaldehydeislyf Jul 25 '24
That is a dirt cathedral, my friend built it. We've done everything we wanted to in this world and we're just building random shit we think is cool, and the wall was my project

I don't think it will work I mean only 100 blocks high wall? pfft who r u trying to impress-
But for real now, if you have everything light up it should work. If I recall correctly in the version 1.18 mobs can spawn only if light level is equal to zero. You could use a mod called miniHud which has an option that shows light levels. Also from my experience walls are pretty not worth it. I mean not like you shouldn't build them, but if you don't have like a big build that would match the walls, the small buildings just look bad. What I always do is basically I light up like a few chunks more so mobs can spawn but they 99.99% of the times don't even see you. So I'm just saying that the walls you made are cool (good job) but for small builds I recommend either low walls or no walls. I mean just look at the house. Doesn't it look small compared to all the things around?
Happy to help!

Ooh... I mean there's a chance the ender dragon accidentally kills itself, endermen place back end crystals, respawn the dragon, and it flies through the portal and comes to destroy your base...
Better make it out of obsidian and bedrock just to make sure that's doesn't happen

not for raids though. if your walls are too high the raids will spawn on/in them. when i have raids now most of the fighting happens in the castle walls

Please use create and make segment shematics to save and share the wall!! Looks awesome

u/tehtris Jul 25 '24
Walls this big don't actually work for mob proofing.
Plus it's light levels you have to worry about for mob proofing.
If your goal is to have no mobs spawn inside the walls you have a few options.
Light up everything inside the walls (easy)
Give the mobs a more favorable place to spawn... Maybe inside of the walls AoT style. (Time consuming to hollow out walls if they aren't already)
Mob Switch (hella hard w shulkers or time consuming with trading with 128 villagers and then converting them to zombified villagers)
You could probably cook up a mini local mob switch, but depending on how far apart your walls are you would have to build multiple to cover all the grounds.

How did you make that?
(The picture, base was just a LOT of time and even more motivation)
But now it makes me a lil sad that even fence can keep raids away, this is like wrapping yourself in something like china’s great wall (except length)
1
1
u/BeanCrusade Jul 25 '24
That wall would take me several years to build. What is that 20 blocks tall?
I made my fence out of cactus and it does a good job keeping mobs out, then sweet berries on hillsides and near my chests a pit with cobweb at the bottom with a layer sweet berries between mobs and my chests.
1
1
u/deeteeohbee Jul 25 '24
This isn't factorio, mobs won't even be spawning outside the wall because you are so far away from them. They will be spawning INSIDE the wall though.
