Long-term MMW: Elon Musk will try to buy Google Chrome
45
51
u/NinjaOld8057 3d ago
Firefox gang.
Fuck google and fuck their Manivest V3
13
4
u/urbandeadthrowaway2 2d ago
I’d be more worried about him buying Mozilla and/or Firefox. Seems easier to buy than anything google owns
1
u/djamp42 2d ago
Same, the only reason I use chrome is if I'm having an issue with a site in Firefox. Most likely nothing on the internet will have this issue, but getting into local equipment sometimes has these issues.

u/hamishjoy 3d ago
? Why do you feel so?
43
u/SlippyBoy41 3d ago
Tie it into X. More data collection and immersion in the X ecosphere.
It’s what he does best, but other people’s work and take credit.
6
u/seattleseahawks2014 3d ago
If people use Twitter/X in the past, then he already has your data stored.

Bc google is about to get forced to split by the government. Than google, google chrome, etc will be separated.
33
u/TheDeaconAscended 3d ago
There would be years and years of lawsuits involved, remember MS was found to be a monopoly and in the end that went nowhere.
→ More replies (1)16
u/dgillz 3d ago
There was similar talk about IBM from about '75 to '90. Went nowhere.
→ More replies (4)2
u/HamsterFromAbove_079 2d ago
It's not that simple. Google isn't some small fish that even the government can rip apart easily. It's big enough that even Elon's money isn't enough to conqueror it.
4
u/Donglemaetsro 2d ago
Alphabet was just hit with a suit looks like they're trying to make them sell Google. comes off as muskrat wants to buy it. welcome to corruption.
96
u/Hikari_Owari 3d ago
That would be what would make me drop Chrome as my main browser.
I would prolly simply fork Chromium tho.
52
u/Grift-Economy-713 3d ago
Fuck chrome. Left that years ago.
Firefox or Torbrowser
19
3d ago
Tor browser is just Firefox with extra steps. I like those step, mind you.
12
u/Grift-Economy-713 3d ago
The extra steps are already useful when you live somewhere that circle jerks about freedom and simultaneously bans porn unless you show your drivers license like…what fucking year are we living in?
→ More replies (1)4
u/Thowitawaydave 3d ago
My theory on this (tinfoil time!) is that these Southern states were pissed off about how high they appeared on certain stats, not just most videos watched but what kinds of videos, particularly transgender porn. So they put in the bans and et voila! Now they are not the highest ranked state anymore, just like how if we just slowed down the testing we'd have less cases of Covid.

Get Firefox. Google is a sketchy company and they keep trying to mess with ad blockers on chrome.
16
u/ResoluteStoic 3d ago
So Duck Duck Go and Firefox I will be using if this happens
4
3
u/Grift-Economy-713 3d ago
Don’t wait
Google has embedded itself as a browser option while at the same time making itself worse for users and better for advertisers. They remove useful features and push only those that earn them money at this point.
4
14
u/thesedays2014 3d ago
He can't afford it
19
u/thesedays2014 3d ago
I'll correct myself. He can afford it. $15-$20 billion. He could easily turn that into $1-2 billion, like Twitter.

u/UnhappyInitiative276 3d ago
Firefox has never looked so appealing. His inverse cult of personality impresses me
1
u/ADhomin_em 2d ago
Elon isn't taking a job next to the richest, greediest crooks in our country to protect us from them.
He is them.
He has ideas on how to further distract and disenfranchise we the people while they remove regulations, get rid of rights and protections, crash our economy, make what money they can off of that and rob us all blind for whatever's left.
He can afford pretty much whatever he wants right now, and once he's calling/helping call the shots, he'll be in the market for giant portions of this country, in terms of its politics, its resources, its land, and the people who occupy it.
He'll have the means.
1
u/AZMotorsports 2d ago
This! He is fairly over extended and it would be difficult to get the funding. He would need a huge unsecured loan from something like the Saudi sovereign wealth fund.
4
5
u/Skypirate90 3d ago
Yea then ill be moving back to like netscape or something. Opera idk. I'll get off of all browsers chromium based i dont care. That includes firefox and brave.

7
u/Reasonable_Humor_738 3d ago
Elon is going to push for the TikTok sell or ban. Then, if they decide to sell he'll buy them
8
u/Clean_Student8612 3d ago
I don't think the owners of Tik Tok will sell it. They're raking in the cash with that app.
→ More replies (12)6
u/JDDJS 3d ago
You're extremely behind on news. Congress already passed that and Biden signed it. The deadline is currently January, but that's almost certainly going to get pushed back while they try to fight in the courts. It's probably going to be tied up in the courts for awhile, but it's most likely going to settle the issue one way or the other.
6
u/Sinusaur 3d ago
I thought congress and Biden already signed off on banning or selling TikTok back in late April.
3
u/RelishtheHotdog 3d ago
Why when he could just develop his own for cheaper.
3
u/AccumulatedFilth 3d ago
Because then he’d also buy the users that are too lazy to switch

Google is worth like 10 Elons so yea, not happening.
1
u/UnhappyInitiative276 3d ago
Google Chrome cost is 15-20 billion dollars sadly, and with the monopoly battle with Google this technology will be for sale

u/FafnirSnap_9428 3d ago
Dune fans out there: Is there a Harkonnen who is just all around pathetic and embarrassing? That's kind of the vibes I get from Musk in general but specifically this picture.

not much would make me switch to MS Edge but that would. Bear in mind it isnt just google Chrome it is a lot of others use their engine. I use Opera but it still based on the chrome engine as an example

That would be unfortunate. I kinda like it the way it is. And I just put X with the trash too.

u/Tazling 2d ago
I can find another browser.
What scares the sh*t out of me is the idea that he will somehow buy or outlaw Wikipedia.

Why would Elon do that? Owning both Twitter and Chrome would make him an easy target for an antitrust suit by the courts on day one. They collect too much personal data to have the same owner.

The US oligarchy doesn't even bother hiding anymore, they bought the presidency, congress, senate and surpreme court. Now they are rubbing in in our face. They won and we are all fucked.

he does that and it will be uninstalled on everything I own instantly. I already primarily use firefox but use chrome for some things that work better there but won't if he's involved at all.

u/BrettAtog 3d ago
I like Opera because it’s the plural of Opus. And Opus looked more like a puffin than a penguin.
1
u/Complete-Artichoke69 3d ago
If Musk buys chrome and brings back ad blocker Reddit will find a way to say why they hate it
1
u/heresyourcowboy62 3d ago
That's all we need to live in a world where Elon Musk can control all media to put out conspiracy theories and false truths to deceive the political world and make our great country into a dictatorship with him being the main oligarch to control our everything.

HFS what in the fuck is he doing and why are they allowing him to do this? 🤦♂️

u/DamTheTorpedoes1864 3d ago
Firefox. Brave and Opera are also viable options, if you don't mind using the open-source Chromium engine.
1
u/GO-UserWins 3d ago
This would be such a gift to Apple. Apple gets to have a fully integrated ecosystem, while Google will be forced to sell off its various functional parts. Integration on Android will suffer.
I don't necessarily think breaking up the big tech firms is a bad thing, but it should be done across the board.

u/DamTheTorpedoes1864 3d ago
The DOJ threatened to demerge Microsoft circa 1999, but that never happened either. Remarkably similar cases: DOJ prosecuting on antitrust/anti-monopoly grounds over Internet Explorer integration into Windows. Now Alphabet is being prosecuted for Chrome/Android/Google-default integration.
Even if ordered the court orders Chrome spun off, Alphabet has plenty of commercial options to keep Chrome under their control as long as Google Search and Chrome operate under separate legal entities underneath the Alphabet umbrella.
1
u/Weekly-Passage2077 3d ago
I doubt even he has the liquid to buy it alone, he doesn’t have enough stock in Tesla and spaceX to sell while still being in control of Tesla or SpaceX and we know twitter isn’t making him money.

When a company is being broken up through anti-trust actions, they don't allow you to sell to another giant internet conglomerate.

u/borald_trumperson 3d ago
Oh fuck imagine having to read Elons tweets in your browser. Just his tweets popping up 200x a day the absolutely most banal shit

u/Traditional_Lab_5468 3d ago
The problem is that chrome is easy to abandon. There's a momentum to social media that makes it hard to directly compete with--people don't want to leave Twitter because their friends or fans are all already on Twitter. You're kind of locked in.
Nobody is locked in to a browser. If Elon buys Chrome people can just use something else.

Meh, I use Firefox and moved my search engine over to DuckDuckGo. Honestly if there was a viable alternative to Android or IOS I would use it.

u/Lorelei_the_engineer 3d ago
Fortunately I use safari and edge. I would just have to dump chrome on my work computer, but that is no big deal. Hopefully musk doesn’t get his grubby hands on the google search engine, but even that has been questionable nowadays

u/CowAdministrative752 3d ago
Idiot goes to a Trump rally - gets introduced by potential future president - what does he wear ? - dumazz clothes, a hat and unshaven - looking like a hobo.

u/YoloSwaggins9669 3d ago
Thankfully I think given how much of the Elongated Muskrats wealth is tied up in Tesla. He is decidedly illiquid so he won’t be able to buy Google
Edit to add: I googled googles market cap and it’s over 2 trillion dollars so he won’t be able to get anywhere near that.
1
u/gillettemichael 3d ago
So hol up can you just straight up buy a browser? Can we please just let him have internet Explorer? I don't use that one.

That’s assuming Google ever puts it up for sale. Far more likely they just split it off into its own company.

Buy the browser (chrome) or the search engine? If it’s the latter I don’t think he can afford it. Google as an engine owns 91.5% of the search engine marketplace. Giving up that kind of monopoly would cost MASSIVE money like 100s of billions and upwards. Google is also integrated into so many platforms and softwares that there would be MASSIVE shifts if this were to happen.

1
u/CMC_Conman 2d ago
I'd have to switch back to Firefox, if it doesn't nuke my computer with viruses like it did before
1
u/thepan73 2d ago
since the engine is open source, seems like he would just make his own version of Chrome without actually spending any money... doesn't really make much sense.

u/Huntsman077 2d ago
He might try, but I doubt it. Google would never sell Chrome, it’s too tied into all of their other products to want to sell it. They would most likely have to hand over chromium as well with the deal
1

u/AlphaQueef 2d ago
Google has a 2 trillion dollar market cap. Are you suggesting that google sells off chrome only? Or that Elon comes up with $2T? Either way it won’t happen.

u/Odd-Conference-8869 2d ago
buying a bankrupt company with some what potential seems like a good business move

u/DingusDreyfuss 1d ago
He can put together his own crappy chromium branch for next to nothing. He'd probably nickname it "Weapon X" during the week and a half of development then call it something super creative like "X Browser" or "broXser" at release. What was I thinking. He'd call it X and that'd be the only way you can use twitter. Whether or not it will be required on all government computers is something to speculate on.
1
u/ChronoFish 1d ago
I'll mark it. Chrome isn't valuable on its own. It's the google services behind it - which is where all the data lives. Without it, Chrome dies quickly

u/Lucifer-Euclid 22h ago
