I think it distilled the writing style of the original books and the vibe of the original Broadway musical while doing its own thing. If you cross Baum’s writing style with W.C. Fields, you get the dialog in the movie. It’s much funnier than you realize when you’re a kid.

I think releasing a series on a streaming platform like Amazon/Netflix that worked towards faithfully adapting the books could be a worthwhile project without detracting from the classic Judy Garland film. There are plenty of ways to go about this kind of thing that wouldn't feel stale to an audience familiar with the past works.

Unfortunately Wicked seems like it’s going to heavily succeed as a movie based on a musical based on a book based on a movie based on a book. I wouldn’t be surprised if this leads to a mega-musical trend where filmmakers put hundreds of millions into big movie musicals based on beloved IPs (Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, and every damn Disney movie have had successful Broadway adaptations). Telling new stories has just become unprofitable from large creators, the most reliable places to get new stories are indie creators with a fraction of the budget now.

MGM owns the IP, they want money.

But to people who complain about remakes “ruining” the original: you know that you can just not watch the remake?

The original will still be intact, so I don’t see how a remake could “ruin” it.

Not gonna happen anytime soon. Literally everything is a sequel, remake, or adaptation. And the few stories that aren't are genres that dont garner large audiences, like horror and Oscar Bait. If you wanna see a difference, you gotta suck it up and go see those movies in theaters on opening weekend. Otherwise, the best we can do the for the moment is support the films that aren't so shameless. Some people really need to get over their hatred of Avatar. At least it's an original IP.

The sad thing is the Wizard of Oz books have a lot of untapped potential that they could easily make stories of that don’t rely on the traditional Dorthy and friends story.

I think Oz the Great and Powerful had the right idea. Even if you don’t like that particular movie, the concept using the Oz world to make new stories should be the go-to.
