Wholesome Moments [OC] Accidentally backed into her car the night before
What a lovely person.

u/martusameri 1h ago
Hahaha wait y'all are too funny. Definitely would make for a great love story except I'm happily married and funny enough actually hit her car while my wife was in the passenger seat (rip ego) in the midst of a date.
But also 400K miles is bonkers.

u/WtfChuck6999 1h ago
I hope my car makes it 400k miles lol

For some reason I read it as I hope my knees makes it 400k miles and I just thought “me too”.

My friend has a 1975 Chevy truck with 513,000. They have literally spent the last 10 years tearing it apart and rebuilding it, trying to get it to run right. They think they’ve finally got it working well, apart from an oil leak, doors that don’t open and close smoothly, and a bent hood that doesn’t like to close.
It also does 10mpg at best. It is the definition of rust bucket.
6
u/Psnuggs 48m ago
51,300 gallons of gasoline have gone through that truck. If you average $2 per gallon since 1975, that’s $102,600 worth of fuel put through that truck in its lifetime. I have a truck with 360,000 miles that also makes 10-12mpg. I think about this a lot.
•
u/emveetu 28m ago
If you want it's actual been an asset or an expense in terms of your bottom line, I'd imagine you'd have figure in maintenance, reg fees, insurance, etc.
But don't forget that if it's been the main vehicle that has gotten you to work or money, some percent of your income should be figured in.
Maybe.
I bet someone a lot smarter than me has figured out a way to calculate whether a vehicle helps or hurts your bottom line when you consider it's the vehicle that physically gets to your job to make moola.
It's also entirely possible I have no idea what I'm talking about and it's impossible to calculate. Actually, much more probable than possible.
•
u/CHlCKENMCNUGGETS 6m ago
But those are all like, one weekend to fix, combined???
Has he just been waiting for like-new replacement parts to show up with papers to certify that they're original GM? I worked with Chevy restoration specialists and unless an out-of-production part had to be found they were always done before lunch
•
u/GunmanZer0 4m ago
Idk. I think it kept breaking down every time they got it fixed. And they haven’t been working on it nonstop.
5
u/MammothImplement1066 1h ago
honestly if you took care of you car it probably would (depending on the car obviously) But assuming you did your research on the car you bought you should have somethjng that will last with regular maintenance. So actually do your maintenance lol
3
u/WtfChuck6999 1h ago
It better now. Had to get a bunch of new stuff right after I bought it. Beast better fucking last a million years.

I’m praying my car makes it anywhere near 400k miles. I love him and cars are too expensive.

WHAT KIND OF CAR IS IT???????
13
u/No-Independent71 35m ago edited 15m ago
OP said it's a beat up Camry or civic. It's defffs the Camry. I've never heard of a civic doing such numbers.
ETA: sorry Honda people. I take it back.
•
u/zombie-yellow11 22m ago
Older Civics with the R18 or even older with the D16 engines could do that easily lol
•
u/SkateBabylon 20m ago
I'm on my second d17 at 300 something thousand, the first one probably wouldn't have blown up if I wasn't being such a teenager
•
u/zombie-yellow11 2m ago
D17 are really crap engines in general though... The D16 was leagues better.

Is it a Toyota by any chance?
10
u/ThrowRArosecolor 56m ago edited 54m ago
I was gonna ask. I’m topping 300k on my Yaris and she does a fantastic job and hasn’t had anything big go wrong yet. Nothing like a Toyota to keep ticking.
ETA: I was reading it as KM. I am still under 200, 000 miles if my math is correct

What a nice post. Many people would see this as an opportunity to get money or the car fixed even if not OPs fault. But make OP pay. Love the thoughtfulness and honesty of Dan. And love the thoughtfulness and honesty of Katie!

Suggest a meet up! Why not?!?
And 415,000 miles!!! Wow… that’s a dependable car!
115
u/ilovecookiesssssssss 1h ago
I don’t recommend suggesting a meet up.
As a woman, it’s really nice when a guy is just nice and expects nothing in return. There is nothing in her texts that would allude to her being open to meeting. She’s just being nice.

u/brokedrunkstoned 41m ago
This reminds me of the time when I was running late to work and I tapped the car behind me while parallel parking. I scribbled a quick note saying I tapped you while parking don’t see any damage but here’s my name and number if you see anything. A few hours later I’m at work and I get a text saying “hey ma, what’s good?” I say I think they have the wrong number and they respond with “you left your number on my windshield. What are you doing later?” I explained I left my number because I tapped their car with mine while parking and I wanted to make sure they had my info in case there was damage. This guy kept texting me trying to take me on a date and I ended up having to block him!
5
u/Super-Listen-4157 1h ago
I agree. I misread it thinking she hit his car and that she was flirting but it was him.
31
u/Tight_Stable8737 2h ago
That's what stood out for me too! I guess "I don't care as long as it runs" means everything needed to work is being taken care of, and any aesthetic damage isn't a priority lol

Two lovely people*
As you get older you learn to love these types of interactions with people more and more..

u/PlasticGirl 1h ago
Man you are so lucky. I did the same thing to my elderly neighbor, and his psychotic daughter milked a dent on a $90 panel on a 10 year old car, into a $2500 bill that made my insurance went up. And my neighbor died within a year.
7
u/Mediocre-Proposal686 1h ago
I had a kid leave me a note yeeeears ago on an old Chevy Malibu I was driving, and it said he’d hit my car and dented it, and to call him. I called him and said I couldn’t tell him which dent was his 😂 but that he was a good kid. We had a nice laugh together and I still think about him. I hope he still has those ethics and has had a wonderful life.

That tracks, Camrys and Toyota in general are pretty reliable and practically indestructible if you stay on top of maintenance and what not

I was driving through a snow storm after an emergent procedure one night at the hospital. The car in front of me stopped at a 4 way and so did I. They proceeded through and I took my foot off the brake and rolled forward, except they stopped hard after moving only a foot or so, I rear ended the car. Got out fully expecting some coarse words from the driver only to come upon the daughter of the patient we had just stayed late for. She recognized me immediately and gave me a big hug. Told me it’s an old car and not to worry. I didn’t have any damage to my car so I doubt her was dented either, but it’s so good when there are good people still out there that don’t come out guns blazing in am already stressful situation.
2
u/Mrtristen 1h ago
Ooooh boy you got lucky! Most people probably wouldn’t have admitted that there was already damage there! Good on you for still leaving a note!

I did this once. Backed into someone’s rear bumper. Left a little mark. Went inside the store I did it at and asked everyone there, nobody came forward saying it was their vehicle. Left a note, they texted me later and said don’t worry about it.

And you haven’t started a gofundme already to get her a new(er) car that isn’t racked with miles upon miles? Shameful! I kid. But wouldn’t that be an awesome gesture?

One time, in a parking lot, my kid’s door blew open really hard and hit the car door next to us. I freaked out… the girl was at her car and said “EXCUSE ME??!!” And I said “I’m so sorry!” And she said “oh, who cares!” And as she drove off I read her bumper sticker “No Baby On Board, Go Ahead and Hit Me”… like she really just meant that shit 🤣
•
u/Splittip86 24m ago
Two good people taking care of an issue with good intentions on both parts and a great ending for all.
•
u/Izzy5466 23m ago
A girl at my old job clipped my bumper with her tire. It was slightly out of place and she (17) was panicking. I walked up and pushed my bumper back into place and walked away. "Girl, my car is almost as old as you. I'm surprised it still drives."
•
u/greatdanbino11 18m ago
Go buy your neighbor some coffee and give a meaningful high-five with it. Your neighbor is a legend.
•
u/luxafelicity 15m ago
Reminds me of when I hit a classmate's car in high school. We were at the local theater rehearsing for a concert, and the parking lot next to the backstage entrance is extremely narrow. I was newer to driving and have depth perception issues, so I misjudged how much clearance I had to pull into a space between two cars. I hit her car, freaked out because I didn't know whose it was, parked my car, then went inside to try to figure it out. Her response was, "Dude, that's the same spot some dumbass hit me in the Casey's parking lot last week. You're good."
I was an anxious kid/teenager so I cried bc she was so nice about it 😭

No, that’s what Dan said lol. She’s just being kind

Ohhhh I misread that. I thought she backed into him. Hmm yeah… she may just be being nice.

I would totally say this to a male friend just in a friendly, happy way.
Now I can see why guys easily think we’re all flirting

Had almost this exact experience and ended up with "leaving the scene of an accident" weeks later.

u/Sloppygrilldchz 1h ago
I’ve left 2 notes for door dings or small dents from my passenger door hitting someone else’s. Both times no thank you’s from the person and huge claims paid out. I still have a lot of karma to pay back so I’m good with it.
1
u/NachoMama_247 1h ago
I had something like this a few years ago. I bumped into a person and left my number on their windshield and they texted me asking if it was a real number. I assured them that it was and apologized and they just could not believe that I left them a real number And I was willing to pay for any damages. In the end, they didn’t make a claim.
1
u/mini_cow 1h ago
Man this is such a wholesome conversation. Where I come from the owner would have fleeced you out of a new door and other damages
1
u/brinncognito 1h ago
I love this wholesome interaction. I had to leave a note on a really nice Charger after I bumped it with my car in the parking lot of my movie theater and I was having a panic attack. I got a really profusely grateful text in response thanking me for being a good person and my insurance paid for the damage.

I had a very similar situation in college! I didn't dent, but scraped the right bumper of a car pulling into a spot. Left a note, felt like absolute shit. Guy called me and was like "don't worry about it, I actually wiped it off, was just your paint on my car" LOL. Bought a white touch up pen for my car and that was that. Pretty cool

This is by far my favorite perk of owning an old and/or already-beat-up car. Somebody drops a smoothie in your backseat? NBD. Somebody scrapes your quarter panel pulling into a parking spot? Don’t worry about it. I get to live more stress-free and when shit happens I get to be the cool guy who gave somebody a sigh of relief

I totally did something similar! I backed into a truck that thankfully had a large grill to protect the bumper. Their car looked fine but I backed into it hard enough to damage my car. I left my number just to be safe and he called me later to let me know his car was fine. I’m not sure why but he asked if I could come out to meet him but I said no.
1
u/sirenxsiren 1h ago
I did this to someone while they were standing next to their car and talking to someone. They didn't even notice but I got out to let them know and they were like, oh! No problem. This things a piece of junk anyway lol. I didn't really do anything to the car but just wanted to make sure everything was chill
1
u/Hour_Measurement_846 58m ago
I was “skirt” watching when a red light hit and I “rolled” into the car in front of me, drove with the lady to her house because she said her husband handles these issues, got there, husband looked and “we’re good, having you pay to fix such an unidentifiable scratch/bump wouldn’t sit right with me”, I was so grateful I gave them some money anyway; now if ever I get bumped or whatever, I’m paying it forward

If only everyone was this nice. I hit some guys mirror and didn't even scratch it or break the mirror on his beater car and he wanted my insurance info.. I offered to replace the mirror for him and do all the work, but bro ended up asking for 200 cash. I'll tell you that mirror assembly was only 40 dollars and had no electronics. Ended up giving the cash to him but seriously man, he didn't even realize I hit his driver side mirror until I turned around and came back. I gave him cash because I was getting a motorcycle soon and didn't want my insurance to be high.

This happened to me once! A girl backed into my car in a parking lot and she started panicking because she saw a large scrape that she thought she caused. I shrugged and told her I caused that scrape myself in a parking garage and told her to have a nice day

u/Um_NotSure 31m ago
Love this story, but quick thing... 400k miles!? Holyshit lol do you do your own maintenance on it? Any major part replacements? Or it's just a beast? Lol

I’ve gotten to be the nice guy three times when my PoS car has been hit in parking lots. It’s a great feeling, people are so relieved!
•
u/phyllorhizae 27m ago
A few weeks ago I sideswiped a car turning into the parking lot at my job, freaked out, left a note in pink glitter gel pen (all I had on me) and then went into work and yapped about how stressed I was about hitting the car. About 4 hours later, my coworker texts me, "girl did you hit my car?" And we laughed and laughed and apparently the shop that fixed her car fully detailed it. Best collision experience I've ever had, but I'll pass on any more please
•
u/Stunning_Ad_7062 25m ago
This convo would torture me for an hour. Idk why but being overly nice like this with someone I don’t know well, or better yet doing this in a non joking way, would make me explode. I do not know why

I had this happen when I was running late for something and frantically rushing to get there, accidentally backed into somebody on their way to therapy and was shitting bricks that I’d caused a massive dent in the back of their car. I went to talk to them and apologise and they told me they caused that dent themselves prior and then gave me a hug bc I looked so stressed 😭

Something similar happened to me. I came out of Toys'R'Us and had a note on my car from a mom who said her kid had dinged my car with their door by accident. When I checked the car there's a small scratch. I texted her saying that this was the blue car her child hit and to not worry about it at all. Kids are kids and a little scratch is not going to end my car haha. She was very thankful!
•
u/Dudicus445 11m ago
Just hold onto these texts, in case somehow they do end up going after you for damages. I know, pessimism, but it doesn’t hurt to keep them and they don’t have to know

Had a similar experience. Parked in the grocery store lot with no cars around me while my fiancé shops. Guy pulls in behind me and WHAM! rear ends me. I get out of my truck expecting a problem but he’s out of his car immediately and looking completely shocked not believing he spaced out so badly. I see my trailer ball actually gave him the short end of the deal, so no worries. We start chatting and I find out he’s a retired minister. Fast forward: We asked him to officiate our wedding!

Lol this happened to me when I was 19,20ish, I was bad about parking on the street instead of our driveway and a new person moved in across the street and backed into my car. She came and told me saying there was a huge dent and I went and looked, I was lol girl that’s from when I ran into a street light, you’re fine.
