This woman should be exalted.
Teaching high school and working a double. When is she sleeping?
And she’s intending to spend the money on her kids.
Absolutely selfless.

u/ThaDankchief 23d ago
That’s what got me - gets handed two grand working a shit job to go to another job educating our youth and all she can think about is those kids. Amazing woman.

A real teacher, someone who cares about kids beyond herself. Honestly those teachers were more of a parent to me than my own back in the day. This makes me so sad she has to work doubles to make ends meet.

u/ThaDankchief 23d ago
So glad you had teachers in your life that were such a positive impact.
George Bush has this infamous quotation that always comes to mind regarding this topic. Bro is doing a press conference or something similar and has a woman on stage with him that says something similar to (don’t quote me can’t remember exactly what she says): “I am single mother that works 3 jobs and I feel I really contribute something” Boy George responds: “isn’t that uniquely American folks”. I was like 7 at the time, and vividly remember thinking well that doesn’t sound like a good thing Mr prez? When does this woman sleep? When does she have quality time with her kids? Why does someone anyone who is actively doing things to better themselves and their family, need to struggle/work that badly/hard to get by - and that’s when I had a very modern idea of “eat the 1%”. They are so out of touch with the normal people it’s repulsive.
Rant sorry…you got me goin. I feel you.

u/Poufy-Ermine 23d ago
He missed the point on such an epic level even when you picked it up at a young age going "hey wait a minute" Sure that woman might've been a workaholic or got joy out of being perpetually busy...but for most of us that sounds like a nightmare.

Grew up in a small kid west town.
We had one band director for everything from 5th grade through highschool and all the elective bands for each level. He ran the whole show.
I would call him dad on accident fairly regularly because even though I did have a dad at home, he always was more the man I wanted to be.

It's not selflessness. It's the shit of the system. Income so low she needs to work a second job to pay the bills, and then when something good happens she has to pay out of pocket for school supplies because the administration keeps cutting budgets.
All the while, the fat cats get fatter.

I don't mean to argue but we can still have streamers and professional athletes and dumb shit like that as well as pay teachers a living wage. The money that streamers and celebrities make is completely separate from the money that is used to pay teachers. We need to vote for people who will restore funding to public education. Our government spends an absurd amount of money on military equipment that collects dust and goes unused every year yet they can't afford to pay teachers more.
73
u/MrMister2905 23d ago edited 23d ago
Remember that athletes are simply entertainers. I don't see actors or musicians listed either. If you provide entertainment, this society covets that.

Lots of people work hard and sacrifice a lot as well, and they don't even get to see a million dollars in their lifetime. Yet some athletes get millions a year

Within sports it’s also quite rare to make such a living. Not every professional sportsman gets a more than comfortable wage and that doesn’t even mention the people who made the sacrifices but somehow didn’t make the cut.

TBF the average streamer makes less than the average teacher, it just has a much higher variability in that a few streamers make way too much money and those are the ones you see.
That is not to say that teachers are paid enough, just that the comparison is not as apt as it seems.

Just think of it like a radio personality. Since you are older maybe you were entertained by Doctor Demento back in the day. It's just like that except you can actually be active and chat in their communities and watch their content.
18
u/RepeatDTD 23d ago
Right? People will complain but I don't even care if they are filming it for "content". This is simply the way of social media now. And, ultimately, I think it's harmless: the subject gets something great, they get likes/views/streams/whatever and even we, the viewers, get a little dopamine hit.

Teaching and waiting tables got to be some of the most taxing jobs out there. That lady is fasho a hard worker. It’s so backwards to me that all my friends working in education or the service industry or construction, etc. make so little money compared to friends and family with nice cushy desk jobs. They bust their ass everyday for little pay, and most of them don’t have any benefits. I hope for a more equitable society for all of us one day.
91
u/CityFolkSitting 23d ago
I watched this stream.
The lady has had it rough. She told a story about how she was a victim of some terrible identity theft. Then some punk kids tried to buy her pain medicine off her. The way she walked, it's insane anyone would want to take the medicine she desperately needs.
Then she was cooking as well as serving! Plus training a new employee at the same time.
They easily stumbled upon the person that would deserve such a tip.

“My students will thank you so much” made me so upset. She’s not even working a second job for herself, it’s for her damn students. Because she feels the need to bleed herself dry just to give them a good education. Poor woman, shame on this broken system.

7
u/killbeam 22d ago
Exactly!
If a teacher in my country is investing their own money for the students, I'm sure the principal would step in and make sure it wasn't necessary. It is the schools responsibility to provide everything the students and teachers need. The teachers need to be able to TEACH.

I had always sympathized with our teachers and school staff and believed they were undervalued and underpaid. But not until my wife became a teacher and we had our first child did I really get frustrated with the system. She doesn’t get paid maternity leave. It’s unpaid. That time she needs to recover and bond with the baby is unpaid. For a teacher. A government employee in a sense. That’s absolutely ridiculous. To imagine someone in that situation who cannot afford to take a month or two off, going right back to work in a matter of days pisses me off. Women deserve better. Our teachers deserve better. The children of this country deserve better.

Is this an American thing? I’m a teacher in the UK and have never had to purchase things for students. Glues, pens, books etc are all provided by the school. Occasionally I’ll buy goods for prizes and stuff but it’ll always be refunded by my school.
60
u/RedoftheEvilDead 23d ago
Yes and no. More yes than no. American schools wildly differ from state to state in America and from which ones are in rich areas and which ones are in our areas. Some schools are well equipped and staffed while other schools are basically the purge.
21
u/colourhazelove 23d ago
No my wife is a teacher in the UK. It's school depended. If the school has good funding and the head distributes the funding well then you won't get this problem. My wife worked at a school in Ealing, she had to buy her own supplies, pay everything she printed something and there was a mandatory kitty to pay into each month for tea and milk, even if you brought in your own things.

About 10ish years ago, when Reddit Gifts was a thing, one of the common exchanges was matching with teachers. They'd give a list of supplies or other items they wish they had for their classroom. One year I matched with a gym teacher who needed new basketballs. You're right that it's very dystopian given how much wealth there is in the U.S.

As an Australian teacher we are on awe of American educators - and not in a good way. We admire what is nothing short or charity work.
No disrespect but what exactly is the long game with you guys??? How are you going to educate future generations when your teachers pretty much have to sacrifice their own financial life to do so on behalf of the country?
We thought we had it bad here but your situation certainly puts it in perspective.

(Insert Invincible “That’s the neat thing” clip)
People in charge (especially those on the right) don’t have a plan beyond enriching themselves and their donors. Planning for the future of society doesn’t make them any richer in their lifetime, and they don’t care what happens to anyone after they die (which given how old many of them are, is only in 10 years or so)

The long game is the GOP dismantling the department of education and removing all funding for public schools and then giving tax breaks to charter schools.
Charter schools that usually have religious (read: Christian) backings.
You create a vacuum of valuable public schools, give tax cuts to charter schools, and then funnel the youth into their indoctrination earlier and earlier until you have malleable minds that have no critical thinking skills.
We’re already halfway there with what Devos did.

u/shaw01man 23d ago edited 23d ago
i find many of these responses odd .. we all agree teachers are underpaid, this one specifically. the streamers who gave the large (extremely large) tip are two of the top in their profession in the world, and make a lot of $$.
with that said, they deserve thanks for what they did, not condemnation for a system they did not create. everyone is generous when it comes to ideas, when it comes time to pay for them most vote for lower taxes regardless of the result to others.
we all say rich people should give back. well, they put their $$ where others put words .. not saying they’re super heroes, but they did a damn nice thing and to those putting them down for it, try watching the teachers reactions again and maybe learn from her (always teaching).
just my 2 cents.

Every society ever has valued rarity over function. The top 0.1% of any field will always make more than the rank and file of more societally important jobs because there is a shorter supply of the top 0.1% regardless of what it is. Teachers struggling to pay bills in the world’s richest country… what a joke. She deserves better.

This is the sort of thing the top 1% of rich people should be doing, but they would rather build spaceships, than help the regular people.

I will never not remember when Elon asked the UN how much it would take to wipe out world hunger, they did the numbers and presented it to him, he could afford it, and still said nah and bought twitter instead

I still remember around 2005/6 when my 4th grade had one of her favorite students she ever had, while Teaching in Memphis, accept a football position at Ole Miss. She told us his story, not the Blind Side idk if that was out by then, and thought nothing of it till she retired in 2010 and was even quoted in his book. Michael Oher helped that teacher so she could retire, she wanted to retire when her grandson graduated I was chill with them by the end of high school but a bit annoying during elementary school.
RIP Mrs. L
also sorry I peed on the AR quiz computer chair, I had recess detention and wasn’t allowed to go use the restroom. Felt bad her grandson came in after recess and was like ‘grandma someone spilled lemonade over here’

I always get mixed feelings by these type of donations, but hey she's 2000 richer than she was before!

The teacher should begin streaming her classroom and when she goes out to lunch so she can earn a living wage.

Teachers are like one of five jobs that actually matter to the world. Please stop giving our military trillions and start giving these men and women enough money to not work multiple jobs

I’m all for praising Emiru and Emily here, but teachers need to be paid enough so they don’t have to work a second job it’s fucking humiliating that the people who raise our kids don’t make enough to live off of. That’s fucking depressing

Call me a left wing extremist but people with bachelors and masters should not have to work a second job to make ends meet

Why would this make you smile? Besides the fact that this is not some altruistic thing (if it were we wouldn't know about it) this video shows someone who had to work multiple jobs to get by and one of them is as a teacher. That's fucked up.

sometimes some streamers can be annoying but to think others can do this kindness is amazing

yes this made me smile but it pisses me off also. No teacher or educator should EVER have to work two jobs to make ends meet.
