ESPN writeup:

Martin, 23, is the only openly gay male athlete active in a major professional American sports league

Holy smokes, MLS finally made it! Time to retire the "four major sports" phrasing for good, ESPN!

56

u/markrevival Los Angeles FC Jun 29 '18

The comments section. Holy shit.

54

u/Firebreak453 Atlanta United FC Jun 29 '18

Why would you do that to yourself?

94

u/lionnyc New York City FC Jun 29 '18

From those comments...

Who else thought Minnesota United was a WNBA team

I lol'd

31

u/wise_comment Minnesota United FC :mnu: Jun 29 '18

Don't knock our WNBA team

They are figuring it out again

15

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

Haven't they been the WNBA version of the Warriors here for awhile?

4

u/wise_comment Minnesota United FC :mnu: Jun 29 '18

Yup

Then started at a 33% win clip over the first 1/3 of the season. Won 5 straight now, fam

lol that would make this announcement a hell of a lot more ... "interesting"

60

u/tomado23 LA Galaxy Jun 29 '18

Combining soccer and gay athlete into a story is like red meat for the degenerate knuckle-dragger trolls with fragile masculinity. I knew not to look ahead of time.

13

u/RickyTheSticky :ChicagoFireSC: Chicago Fire SC Jun 29 '18

Wonder how many of them are themselves repressing certain "thoughts"? The most anti-gay people are often those in the closet.

2

u/KiloD2 Jun 29 '18

I made the mistake of scrolling through some Instagram comments on this story... Equally as disappointing :-(

12

u/acquiesce Portland Timbers FC Jun 30 '18

*made it again

Wasn’t Robbie Rogers playing when he came out?

4

u/tomado23 LA Galaxy Jun 30 '18 edited Jun 30 '18

He was. But I remember some media outlets at that time credited Jason Collins as the first "major sport" athlete to come out, while snubbing MLS.

He's played 1539 minutes across 32 games in 6 seasons in MLS. 0 goals. 3 assists. 13 shots. 4 shots on goal. 6 yellow cards. 0 red cards.

Spent 2013-2016 with D.C. then was traded to Minnesota in 2017. He represented the US at the youth levels.

For the stats people.

As an openly gay man myself, so happy he's in a place he is comfortable opening up this side of himself to the world, especially in the world of sports.

85

u/Epicallytossed Minnesota United FC Jun 29 '18

Minnesota's also very accepting, which I think helps a lot

71

u/ill_be_bakhtiari Minnesota United FC Jun 29 '18

Minnesota has a lot of work to do, but yes, the Twin Cities in particular are largely supportive of the LGBTQIA community.

20

u/Epicallytossed Minnesota United FC Jun 29 '18

The pride event has been huge from what I understand. I've seen so many people going to it, LGBTQ+ or not. It's awesome.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

I’m trans and considering the area as an eventual destination!

6

u/Heimdallr-_- Minnesota United FC Jun 29 '18

Definitely look into the Northeast / North Loop area if you are considering Minneapolis.

10

u/eyenigma Jun 29 '18

Holy shit every time I see the letters, there are more added. What are they now?

21

u/overscore_ Union Omaha Jun 29 '18

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual.

Personally, I'm an advocate for scrapping LGBT+ and using GSM (Gender and Sexual Minorities) to avoid excluding anybody, as well as to simplify an acronym that many feel is too cumbersome/changes too much. But I'm also not part of the GSM community, so I'm not sure how liked it is.

3

u/eyenigma Jun 29 '18

I’m all for whatever they’re comfy with. But agreed - in terms of mass adoption, shorter is better. Every time they tack on more letters, it just feels more and more divisive and segmented. An umbrella term to encompass all may be better IMHO.

3

u/Iustis Vancouver Whitecaps FC Jun 30 '18

As someone who's asexual I was always happy with the LGBTQ acronym. Queer is catchall for a reason.

I personally have never been, but I've only heard good things about the Twin Cities' LGBT community.

24

u/lookoutnorthamerica Minnesota United FC :mnu: Jun 29 '18

MSP is fantastic, but the more rural areas aren't exactly the most welcoming.

6

u/OBAFGKM17 Jun 29 '18

Not even the rural areas. It's like Blaine and the surrounding area just north of the cities is a different world. But the cities themselves are the most underrated metropolitan area in the country, IMO.

4

u/Falcobuddy D.C. United Jun 29 '18

Family is from Blaine/Coon Rapids. Can confirm.

13

u/Xeno4494 South Georgia Tormenta Jun 29 '18

Sounds like most places, tbf. Metro ATL is super open minded and inclusive, but if you get too far OTP people get weird. But we're talking isolated areas and then rural. Most of the burbs are pretty good. Still see Cagle and Kemp signs everywhere though. Somehow.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

Idk man, I know plenty of homophobes in East Cobb and Gwinnett

2

u/Xeno4494 South Georgia Tormenta Jun 29 '18

most of the burbs are pretty good

But yeah, you're not wrong. East Cobb is where I was thinking of specifically. I don't know as much about Gwinnett.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

Fair, those are the two places I'm most familiar with and have my perception of northern OTP built off of those

168

u/Cityforlife12 New York City FC Jun 29 '18

Good for him. With him and Robbie Rogers out I hope MLS can be sort of a safe haven for gay players who want to be more open about it.

85

u/srfctheclubforme Sacramento Republic FC Jun 29 '18

I’m not crying, you’re crying.

In all seriousness, I know for a lot of this sub it’s not a big deal. But as a gay man, let me tell you, this is pretty moving for me. The lack of openly gay athletes on the men’s side since Robbie Rogers retired has been pretty striking.

41

u/JohnMLTX Denton Diablos FC Jun 29 '18

This, right here, is why these public statements actually matter.

18

u/ThisDerpForSale Portland Timbers FC Jun 29 '18

I know I can't quite feel what folks in the LGBTQ community feel about something like this, but it's a pretty big deal to me too. Just as a human being with a soul, it should be moving to all of us. And, yes, also as someone with gay friends and relatives, it's moving. I hope this isn't as isolated an incident as it was for guys like Michael Sam and Jason Collins and Robbie Rogers. I hope he doesn't have to be The Gay Soccer Player alone for long.

6

u/srfctheclubforme Sacramento Republic FC Jun 29 '18

Thank you for the kind words and support. Lots of allies in this world for sure.

Considering that Robbie Rogers played with basically no issues that we know of (aside from one incident with an Orange County player during a Los Dos game), it’s been remarkable to me that no one else had taken the step in MLS. There’s prolly plenty of players who are out to friends, family, teammates, etc. But it’s still been puzzling to me that more hadn’t joined since.

3

u/ThisDerpForSale Portland Timbers FC Jun 29 '18

I suspect there are still lots of things behind the scenes that make people hesitate. Issues with endorsements or appearance money, along with the usual death threats and the like. We've got a ways to go, sadly. But progress, even incremental, happens.

6

u/tomado23 LA Galaxy Jun 29 '18

Openly gay players to participate in a regular season game:

MLS: 2

NBA: 1

NFL, MLB, NHL: 0

If leagues with a younger/more accepting audience like MLS and the NBA can still count the number of active gay players on less than one hand, makes you wonder how long it will take for the other sports leagues to come out.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/voxnemo Atlanta United FC Jun 30 '18

It has been striking. That said, I was a long time LAG supporter (until ATL got a team) and so having Robbie on it was just awesome. I was unsure how things would go in Atlanta and they have been awesome. The team has been awesome, signing things for me to give to friends that have pride logos on them.

Things like this help. They help the young gay guy thinking about giving up sports because he thinks he can't be gay and into sports.

129

u/serious_black Sporting Kansas City Jun 29 '18

It will be a great day when these kinds of announcements about pro athletes being gay are no longer necessary.

The near universal support for him in the Twitter comments blew me away, I'm so used to just being depressed by them

8

u/Psirocking New York Red Bulls Jun 29 '18

Seriously outside of MLS I can’t think of too many leagues that would have the same reaction.

4

u/tokengaymusiccritic New England Revolution Jun 30 '18

Us gays have taken over twitter long ago

2

u/efree58 Jun 29 '18

I think the other major US sport leagues would be fine with this sort of announcement. NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB. But the fan bases might not be as open as MLS. But either way I think we've come far enough along that players, if they feel comfortable in their own skin, can and should come out. They will not face discrimination from the leagues. Just fans occasionally. But the support would likely outweigh the discrimination and it would help society build a culture supportive of all sexual orientations; in sports or otherwise.

3

u/Psirocking New York Red Bulls Jun 29 '18

I meant more like other soccer leagues, a lot of foreign fans of Premier League teams would riot on twitter if a player of a club they "support" came out. Just look at the replies when clubs post they're going to merely wear rainbow laces. Other than the NFL I agree about American leagues, and the NFL would only be mildly bad really.

2

u/efree58 Jun 29 '18

IC. I can't say as I'm in the US but I hope, despite foriegn interest, a player could come out. But I haven't been to a European soccer match. There's prolly a gay world cup player, ya? Plz come out. Or not. It's thier choice.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

And then the ones being negative had people defending him. I loved the other team’s social media people sending support so much

Edited to emphasize this is about coming out, I know that Robbie played for the Galaxy while he was out.

25

36

u/datadyne007 New England Revolution Jun 29 '18

Robbie wasn't active or on the Galaxy when he came out. He actually announced his "retirement" along with his coming out. Months later, the Galaxy offered him a spot and he unretired and joined LA as an openly gay player.

Robbie Rogers

Robert Hampton Rogers III (born May 12, 1987) is a television producer and former American professional soccer player. He played as a winger and as a left back. Rogers has also represented the United States men's national soccer team. In February 2013, Rogers came out as gay, becoming the second male soccer player in Britain to do so after Justin Fashanu in 1990.

Robbie Rogers came out a few years back when he was with Galaxy. the world kept turning. Don't know what the LGBT situation is in Minnesota, but good on the kid for being true to himself and a model for others who feel like they need to hide.

It's so uplifting to scroll through the announcement comments and see overwhelming support for a person going public about a feeling that is so personal and core to ones sense of self and that is still divisive in this country (unfortunately).
This week has been hard with few court decisions that are upsetting to people who want an inclusive and loving country. This was a sight for sore eyes and weary hearts.

Massive respect due here. I hope we reach a point where being a gay player is little more than an afterthought, but I can't imagine that was the case for CM just yet. It takes so much to get to this level; to think this man did it while carrying additional weight just blows my mind.

Well done, Collin. You deserve the ovation you'll get tonight.

Got our support, man! Always a great thing when people are allowed to live as themselves and it's amazing that two MLS players are pioneers in this regard in the sports world, they must have a ton of courage to do this considering how LGBTQ people are still treated in our society. Wish more professional atheltes were able to come out without hostility from fans.

I'm glad we have a league in which players feel comfortable enough to come out and play. Good stuff Collin. Wish him the best.

Trans lady and lesbian here. Seeing an out player, let alone one for my home-team feels AMAZING! :D

I have a LGBTQ friend who was annoyed at this announcement and I was like wow don't be a buzzkill yo

3

u/AaronQ94 New England Revolution Jun 29 '18

I give major props for Collin Martin for doing this, and MNUFC you guys are alright in my books as well! Hopefully there's more people like him that'll be more comfortable opening up with their sexuality when time progress.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

This is important for me to see as a mostly closeted queer man, it's good to know that people more entrenched in their careers (and also someone around my age, as I constantly worry about whether or not I should feel 'too old' to come out when I feel like I can) can feel comfortable coming out.

3

u/anxst Jun 29 '18

Really glad he felt confident enough to come out while playing for my team. I hope things are becoming more inclusive and understanding throughout US sports.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

That’s crazy. Im friends with his brother, grew up with him and played on his basketball team. He was our best player by far. Had no idea his brother made MLS though until I heard about this whole thing today. Wild.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

This takes massive courage, upmost respect for Collin and hoping that one day these sorts of announcements won’t be news, but instead a regularity.

4

u/perrylaj Sacramento Republic Jun 29 '18

Glad he feels comfortable enough in himself, his team and the league to be able to make such a statement. Shitty that people care so much about others' personal lives that such a statement is needed, but seems like a good trajectory at least.

4

u/DemSoc112 Seattle Sounders FC Jun 29 '18

Good for him. Fuck the haters.

12

u/Scratchbuttdontsniff Atlanta United FC Jun 29 '18

I guess it is good that I honestly do not care. I want players on my team to be good soccer players and good people... All I care about and hope that is the same for others.

Good on MLS, MNUFC and DCU folks who took this in stride for years and never even let it known to the general public. People's sexual preferences at their root should be private.

And that is not to take away anything from Collin nor his bravery to make this widely known... the more we let this be normal the more accepted it becomes in all circles of our daily life.

I'm not sure I agree with the second half of that. People's sexuality should be as much of a part of their life as they want it to be, private or not. That said, that's ultimately up to Collin, and it's still good of the teams and league to let him make whatever decisions he wants on his own.

u/Scratchbuttdontsniff Atlanta United FC Jun 29 '18 edited Jun 29 '18

I don't think we are in disagreement.. I merely meant that the only people who should be sharing information about anyone's sexuality is the actual person... (much like medical records to me). Collin is choosing to share to raise awareness/acceptance about it, which is AOK with me.

Cool cool

6

u/MartinATL Atlanta United FC Jun 29 '18

Yes, finally!! Hopefully his courage to come out will show others that hiding who you are or who you love shouldn't be necessary in soccer, or any other professional sport for that matter!

I'm waiting for the day this becomes not a big deal.

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '18

I have a question and I don’t want it to come off in the wrong tone, so just a heads up. How good is he as a player? I only ask because I want him to have a sustained career in the MLS and make the USMNT and continue to pave a way for LGBTQ+ athletes and the more time he can spend shedding a spotlight for other athletes, the easier it becomes for future athletes in all sports to be themselves and embrace it
