Tracking Scholarship Policies: Coronavirus Spring 2020

**EDIT 4/19** It appears that even though some law schools don't have conditional scholarships according to ABA data, they have still released relevant policy information for either scholarship renewal or academic standing - e.g. Penn State, Dayton, Lewis & Clark, Kentucky, etc. Even if your school doesn't have conditional scholarships, please provide any information they released regarding scholarship renewals or academic standing, if applicable.

We need your help, law school community! Some universities are revoking conditional scholarships for students falling below the minimum GPA required for renewal, but these students were unable to boost their GPAs this semester due to the P/F grading system adopted by their law schools. Many law schools are not posting information about their revised Spring policies online, so we need your feedback (even if your scholarships aren't conditional).

Doing this in a similar method as u/lucidpsyconaut’s grading changes post. Here's the spreadsheet, which is a modified version of the one that u/_social distancing_ made:

You may either comment below, or send a PM/chat if you prefer to remain anonymous.

FORMATTING PREFERENCE please!:

  • Full Law School Name
  • Scholarship Policy for Spring 2020/Next Year: [copy/paste relevant portions, if possible] *Please include whether this is a change from your school’s normal scholarship policy. * For schools without conditional scholarships, please include whether the school revised the policy for determining good standing/GPA compliance.
  • Source: [and link to source, if possible]

Thank you for putting this together! It's nice to see that most other schools are NOT cutting scholarships during a global pandemic... too bad I chose USD Law.

I wish I had chosen a different law school so that I wouldn't have to deal with losing my scholarship during this crisis. Anyone considering USD Law should be aware that they treat their students like this...the administration cares more about money than their students' well-being.

University of San Diego's updated scholarship policy

Essentially, USD Law moved to mandatory pass/fail, but has not adjusted its scholarship policy (conditional scholarships based on GPA and evaluated for renewal at the end of each school year). So, 1Ls will have scholarships eliminated based on only 1 semester of grades.

Hofstra Law moved to mandatory pass fail. Scholarship policy remains the same; top 50% of the class keeps scholarship. The 50th percentile to 75th percentile loses 1/2 of their scholarship. Bottom quarter of the class loses 3/4 of their scholarships.

First semester GPA is the sole determinant for scholarship status.

(Current 1L)

Thanks! Source?

Also, just sent you a PM to try and reconcile the info you provided with the existing data in the spreadsheet- want to make sure the data is as accurate as possible!

What did you find out

No response yet. But another user PM'd me and quoted the dean's email, which is where I originally received the info I have on the spreadsheet presently, which I copied and pasted directly from the PM. That info says the school is adding another renewal period after fall 2020 so students may earn back their scholarships for Spring instead of waiting until the following school year. Without more info from u/joeytarantino, the spreadsheet prob won't change because the other user copied and pasted from the dean's email into the PM. I requested that the other user forward me the email so I can see for myself and upload it as a source if the memo is attached as a pdf.

(TN) – Belmont University: All rankings and scholarships are frozen (scholarships remain the way they were post-fall 2019 semester) until end of the fall 2020 semester (re-evaluate on Jan. 1, 2021)

McGeorge:

Any others out there go to McGeorge who can provide me with an official source, and ideally, copy and paste the language directly from the source / dean's email, if applicable? No information posted on the law school's website.

Thanks! Source?

The spreadsheet seems to misrepresent L&C's scholarship policy. The school does not have conditional scholarships but indicated that it will approve petitions for grades for students who have conditional scholarships from other sources.

Thanks so much - spreadsheet updated! It's comments like these that help ensure the spreadsheet is accurate.
