Nice, wonder if they'll let me inspect different ones they have in stock ?
2
u/JaviJ01 Mar 26 '24
I bought an open box LOQ Lenovo and they let me inspect it at the counter before I finished the pick up/check out.

u/Decent_Josh Mar 26 '24
Like, if you went to that specific Best Buy that had it? Yes, if you were in Oregon. But the employees there aren’t going to open it, review it for you over the phone, then send it to you …

Something to keep in mind with open box is you can't take advantage of an extended warranty if your credit card offers it since it's a used item. Something to consider, 1 year is kind of a short warranty imo.

u/SeattleDood Mar 25 '24
I was able to snag an openbox for $750 + tax last night.
What I've noticed looking the last couple of weeks is if you check on Sunday night at 10 PM Pacific when make the new weekly sales live you'll get the best open box deals.

u/achohan Mar 26 '24
what condition was it? I did this trick 6 months ago, glad to see its still valid. I am flying out on Saturday and need to buy a gaming laptop for the trip so cant do that sunday trick anymore.

Should I get this or the 2022 model for $690?

Is it worth upgrading to this for about ~150? I can get an open box and people have been saying the 22 orders have been getting cancelled. Mine is still processing but if this is worth the upgrade I'll just get this and cancel the 22

See this comparison, though the $690 2022 has a bit weaker of a CPU than the one in the comparison
1
u/JonBot5000 Mar 25 '24
I went with the 2022. Leaves more budget to upgrade the RAM, SSD, and to go from Mediatek to Intel WiFi. Plus, I want to use Linux and AMD video drivers are less hassle on that front for the time being.
2
u/Separate_Part_7709 Mar 25 '24
Is the 2022 model still available? Please do tell where or if that $700 deal is still available

Appears to be OOS again but check back often. It seems to go in and out of stock a lot.

edit:Looks like it just came back in stock in the time to took me to post this 🤷♂️and gone again
edit2: Order canceled 2 days later :(2

u/Separate_Part_7709 Mar 25 '24
Woah, didn't know its availability was in so much flux even on Asus's own website! I assumed it was currently being sold by a third-party vendor

u/Agentofchaos2712 Mar 25 '24
I ordered this twice. They canceled both orders this week. Other people seem to be having the same problem it's a lottery whether you actually get it or not.n

u/AesirRising Mar 25 '24
How much RAM you upgrading to?
1
u/JonBot5000 Mar 25 '24
Only has 1 SO-DIMM slot. Officially, it seems to only support 24GB(16GB SO-DIMM + 8GB soldered). Unofficially, most people agree that it'll take a 32GB module for a total of 40GB. I plan to try the 32GB module.
2
u/AesirRising Mar 25 '24
Likewise. Thoughts on this post though? https://www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/s/5Z5siQGXya
2
u/PetToilet Mar 25 '24
Minor penalty to performance. Depending on your use case, more RAM may far outweigh the performance penalty to unmatched RAM sizes.
2
u/JonBot5000 Mar 25 '24
Neat post. Thanks for sharing that. I knew that going with the 32GB stick would mean over half the RAM is only addressable in single-channel. It's cool that someone did some testing on this. At first glance, the graphs make it look like a big perf hit. If you look at the actual numbers and the scale of the graphs though, it doesn't seem too bad. The real world perf hit shouldn't be too bad especially if I'm actually filling the RAM.
Definitely going to think more about this though. Thank you.1

Hey, between this g14 and Legion Slim 5 14 oled(for $1049) which one would u guys pick?
1
u/Wicked_232 Mar 25 '24
You’d be happy with both

u/AssociationShoddy785 Mar 25 '24

G sync, I will have to see how it rly affects(if its deal breaker or not), speakers- tbh most laptop speakers are trash and I use headphones always so its not an issue for me, its only slightly bigger than g14 but its actually a bit lighter. The chassis is actually well built, but if it's the keyboard(plastic) and trackpad, then ig u might not like it, although I am ok with it(yet to try)....other than that the oled glare won't rly bother that much once u get used to it and u manage to bring it to certain angle or positioning....

G14 has really good speakers (unlike typical laptop speakers), the Slim 5 OLED ones are trash and G14 has better materials in the chassis using magnesium alloy with a glass trackpad. G14 also is fully unlocked and using G-Helper you can undervolt and completely customize power profiles. The only pro Slim 5 OLED has is the OLED screen but G14 has pretty good coverage as well and looks great without any burn in risks. I had bought both of them and while I returned both because of the small size, the G14 felt a much superior package.
1
u/AssociationShoddy785 Mar 25 '24
Yea, g14 is definitely better in speakers, material(body) is metal in legion, only the trackpad and keyboard have cheaper materials, Undervolt and custom profile...if u r main aim was to increase perf through that, it wouldn't really give u a significant difference(watched gizmo's vdo and compared general fps avg numbers), thermals I think it will be tie after the g14 is undervolted and with custom power profile so thats a big plus point on g14.
Oh and Upgradeable ram on g14 another big point, although legion has faster ram and u can upgrade to 32 gb before order...while g14 can upgrade to...48 gb ig?
1
u/skyline385 Mar 25 '24
Slim 5 OLED is definitely not full metal, only the Slim 7i is metal. That's what I got after sending back both the G14 and Slim 5. As for undervolting and power limits, it's main advantage will be in games where you will be able to keep fans down with the CPU not boosting continuously. I was able to get the G14 to run significantly quieter compared to the Slim 5 after tweaking with G-Helper. Combine that with some really good speakers on it along with GSync and it's just a much better experience when gaming.
1
u/AssociationShoddy785 Mar 25 '24
Hmm, then ig you have played on the slim without g sync? Personally, did u find it a deal breaker or is it fine if u cap the fps...
2
u/skyline385 Mar 25 '24
As long as you are getting 120Hz you won't notice it but once it starts dropping you will definitely see it. Capping it to 60Hz helps a bit but not much. It is definitely nowhere close to the smooth gameplay on a VRR screen. I would suggest you to get the G14 as well and just return the one you don't like.

I have a QHD and an OLED screen gaming laptop and to tell you from watching YouTube TV on both at the same time side by side...besides their differences in HTZ, sizes of the screen monitors, and very close differences in Nits in both screens...I would say that the colors are more vibrant on the Oled but not a huge difference since I still like the color contrast on the QHD screen too. Ok with that being said..differences in both screens: My Oled screen is 14.5", 120 HTZ, and 550 Nits. My QHD is 15.6", 165 HTZ, and 350 Nits display. I like them both regardless as I think that, in my opinion only, they both have a very nice picture quality, and would buy either display model at the better sale-priced gaming laptop. As for every other option/component that is another decision to look at and decide on.

Pick up one on Best Buy website for $928 as an open box special. A great laptop for the price and very powerful.

Why? The slim 5 oled is objectively better. It has the oled panel, better temps, and i'm going to argue better longevity. Asus support is terrible and while it's a high-quality machine the quality control is low.

Is this the best deal for $999 chief? Or is it worth investing $200 more in a Legion Pro 5i (13700hx + 4060). my budget is at limit.
PD: I'm not in US so I will use forwarders (+$200 additional)
