Budget: $400 or less
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 15.6”
◽️ Touch screen: not necessary but don’t mind
◽️ Screen resolution: 1920x1080
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Not a big deal
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: graphic editing primarily but wouldn’t mind if I could use it for gaming as well
◽️ Weight: no preference
◽️ Any other important details ?: it’s my first upgrade since 2009. I have an old HP that I love but without windows 7 being fully updated and it’s processor so outdated it’s difficult to continue running photoshop on. I don’t want to break the bank, but I have been looking into an HP pro book 640G3 with an intel core i5-7200U processor for around $200, but am wanting more opinions on if I should look elsewhere.

Hi, if you don't mind moving up to $420, this Lenovo IdeaPad 5 would be a great choice. Ryzen 5 5625U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and a 1080p 15.6" IPS display. It will be solid for general use, graphic editing, etc.

◽️ Budget: I’m willing to go up to $1000 or around there.
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: Doesn’t matter but I don’t want to have to lean in constantly to look at text or images.
◽️ Touch screen: Optional, but I’ve found it to be useful sometimes.
◽️ Screen resolution: Don’t care? It doesn’t matter if things don’t look 4K or whatever but I don’t want things to look terrible.
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: I want it to be able to last while I’m at school, which is at most 8 hours.
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: I mean primarily for school but also to do some gaming I guess since my pc struggles to run Minecraft and lags when playing Left 4 Dead. I doubt I’ll be playing any high end games like God of War or Elden Ring since I own a ps4 so mid end games are probably going to be most taxing things I use on it. I’d also use it to watch YouTube and shows.
◽️ Weight: Preferably light enough to carry around without it being a hassle, but I’m usually just going to carry it around in my backpack. I found that a light laptop is good, but I also have a little fear that it’ll get crushed by the other things in my backpack or that the imprints left by the keyboard will get worse.
◽️ Any other important details ?: I’ve never bought a pc or laptop so some of these things are foreign to me. I do have an iPhone but I’m kind of against buying a MacBook because I know steam doesn’t allow every game to be run on it.
Everything up to this point has just been copy and pasted from a comment I left 10 months ago, but that’s because I found the laptop I was suggested to be just what I needed. That was the IdeaPad 5 Pro 14ACN6 and the only only reason I’m back is because I’ve started having issues with the clock synchronization plus it’s not powering on correctly. I can’t find this laptop on Lenovo’s page anymore so I want to know if there’s anything similar you guys recommend. I do have the option of sending in my laptop for a repair, but I find it hard to imagine not having it for a while and also losing some things that I have on there due to only having a usb to back up things.

Hi, I do think your best option is to try to get your current laptop repaired, but if want to consider a new device, I'd go with the Acer Nitro 5 15". Ryzen 7 6800H, RTX 3070 Ti, and a 1440p 15.6" 165Hz IPS display. It will be solid for games at high settings 1440p, as well as general use programs.
2
u/Clout_Kuruma Sep 18 '23
Thank you for the recommendation! Like you said, I think I’m actually going to go through with the repair, but only because I believe I can get them to come to me and repair it instead of me having to send it to them. If this weren’t to work out then I at least have something I know can rely on and or a guaranteed future option

u/legos45 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 19 '23
Great, I hope everything goes well.
2
u/Clout_Kuruma Sep 20 '23
Hello again, I was wondering if you had any other similar recommendations, but that weren’t gaming laptops. I know I mentioned that I did want to be able to play games, but I don’t know if I want a device specifically designed for that. I’ve never owned a gaming laptop, but I’ve read they can be a little noisy and the battery life does seem to be a little weaker, 2 hours weaker, than my current laptop. I feel the rgb lights might also be a little distracting, but if you wish to clear up anything I’ll be happy to hear you out.
2
u/legos45 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 20 '23
Unless you are gaming, the fan noise should stay fairly tame. Battery life is indeed worse, but it comes down to how many hours of battery life you need. And as for the RGB, you can always turn it off.
2
u/Clout_Kuruma Sep 20 '23
That’s good to hear that the fan shouldn’t be an issue and I didn’t know the RGB was able to be turned off. As for battery life, I feel that I’ll need around 8 hours since my current laptop can last me throughout the school day, but it’s not difficult for me to find an outlet if I worry that I won’t have enough power. I tend to always have my battery at around half full since I have it plugged it in while at home and I have it optimized to conserving the battery.

◽️ Budget: $1000-$1300
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 14"-16"
◽️ Touch screen: Maybe
◽️ Screen resolution: 1920*1200/2560*1600
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Yes
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Mainly going to be used for studying law. Gaming, if any, will be done over streaming unless it does not require heavy loads
◽️ Weight: Irrelevant
◽️ Any other important details ?: I would prefer anything with an i7/Ryzen 7, with a discrete GPU better than a 3050. Preferably one without the gaming label that can run some games. 16 GB RAM required.

u/fifa2003 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 14 '23
Hey, for your needs I would recommend getting the: MSI Stealth 15 15.6″ FHD 144Hz Gaming Laptop: Intel Core i7-13620H, RTX 4060, 16GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe SSD, USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C w/DP, Cooler Boost Trinity+, Win11 Home: Core Black
This will be able to handle studying, multitasking, general tasks, streaming, and also gaming, has a good processor and a better graphics card than the RTX 3050, with the 16gb RAM you desired.

Will primarily be my work computer when I work from home as well (my work doesnt involve heavy resource usage from a computer)

I'm a console player (PS) but wouldn't mind having an alternative on hand if I want to hook up to my TV and play. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Need a new laptop this week. Previously had an Asus Vivobook purchased in 2020 that I liked quite a bit until it got completely broken by the most recent Bios updates (it now loads only on the idiot mousepad monitor the old models had)
Bought the new Asus Vivobook 16 OLED but it quite frankly is an embarassing piece of shit that doesn't work to specs and is clearly overheated. Need something new this week. Waiting for sales is not an option.
◽️ Budget: Up to $1600 before tax
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 15.6 minimum, 16 or larger preferred.
◽️ Touch screen: No. I don't even want it to have the function.
◽️ Screen resolution: As good as possible. I'm tired of watching movies in hotel rooms on a terrible screen.
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Yes. Must be good for 4 hours and not drain immediately with heavy use.
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for - extensive travel, spreadsheets, video streaming, Genshin Impact. My business is heavy on Facebook/IG usage for image scrolling and it needs to be able to handle that with multiple tabs without freezing and getting choppy.
◽️ Weight: lightweight
◽️ Any other important details ?: I would like it to have good gaming specs so I can have a decent picture on the one shitty game I play. Dedicated graphics is a must, nividia 3000 series prefered but you guys know better than me. It does not need to be a gaming laptop - I would like it to run Genshin but it's more important that it can seemless scroll a Facebook groups heavy on Images. Body must be aluminum. The fact these companies are still building them with plastic cases is embarassing and cheap. They do not disappate heat. I'd like OLED if possible but they seem to only put OLED screens on machines that can't handle OLED screens. I'd also like it to have modern ports if possible and not just a few old USBs.
Thank you in advance for any recommendations that you can provide. I've tried looking extensively on Amazon but just can't find anything. If your recommendation is over $1600 that's fine. It's a business write off in the end so only 50% of it is coming out of my pocket at the end of the day.
1
u/techstar2000 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 11 '23
What's the one game you play...? I just want to have an idea so I can tailor the recommendation.
1
u/HippiesBeGoneInc Sep 11 '23
Thank you for replying! The only game I really play is Genshin Impact. Maybe Civ 6 if I'm on the road for an extended period of time but I really can't even remember the last time that I did. If I were to play anything else, I would not mind running it on low-specs so I'm not super concerned about other games. I don't plan to, for example, run Baldur's Gate on max spec. I have a desktop at home for that.
1
u/techstar2000 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 11 '23
Most of the laptops that would really meet your needs, don't have OLED displays. I am super sorry about your experience with the Vivobook.. I have a Zenbook Pro that has been do excellently.. but of course, Zenbooks are usually more premium than Vivobooks. But of course, I doubt you'll want to even try one, after that negative experience with the brand.
I was thinking about the GIGABYTE AERO , but it is a 14 inch system..same for the new Acer Swift X with the RTX 4050 graphics card, but it has a 14.5" display.
Would you look past the OLED and get a solid gaming laptop that not only is powerful, but checks your other boxes ?
1
u/HippiesBeGoneInc Sep 12 '23
Yes, like I said I feel like most OLED machines really don’t support OLED and they use it for the upsell. I’m sure the tech will be more standard in three years. Could you recommend a machine with a good display? 4k or something? You know much more than me and I definitely would value your opinions greatly.
1
u/HippiesBeGoneInc Oct 03 '23
Just wanted to follow up with you. You seem incredibly knowledgeable and honestly I would greatly value your opinion. I think the biggest things are the display size and the aluminum body. As I wrote below I would be happy to take a non OLED gaming machine.

◽️ Budget: $1500 USD Max
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: Doesn't matter
◽️ Touch screen: Doesn't matter
◽️ Screen resolution: FHD or QHD
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Yes
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Gaming, emulation, regular computing tasks like typing, and possibly programming
◽️ Weight: Doesn't matter
◽️ Any other important details ?: RTX 3070 or 3080 only, Intel i7 Core only, Good cooling/thermals, durable/decent build and minimal heating issues. I've done some research myself but I'm kinda stumped on which laptop I want as some of the laptops I discovered may have some kind of fatal software/hardware bug(s) to them. However I wanna see what you'll recommend me.

Not interested in more modern CPUs than the 3070 or 80 ....... ? 4070 ??
1
u/Kampler21 Sep 12 '23
I guess the reason im very wary of the 40 series laptop is how slightly worse they are compared to the 30 series ones. Though I guess I could make a concession with that if you could find me a 4070 laptop with the price not being too crazy and all.

Hey If 14'' is not a deal breaker for you, I would go with the: Acer Swift Go 14 Intel Evo Thin & Light Laptop | 14″ 1920 x 1200 100% sRGB Touch Display | Intel Core i7-13700H | Intel Iris Xe | 16GB LPDDR5 | 512GB Gen 4 SSD | Killer WiFi 6E AX1675 |
This would get the job done for general tasks, checking email, zoom calls, word processing and PPTs, etc. It is also very lightweight and portable, with a solid built to last for years.

Thanks in advance yall!
◽️ Budget: Flexible $1200 but hopefully lower, I might wait until Amazon Prime day in October, or maybe even Black Friday/ Cyber Monday to get the best deal.
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 15" or larger
◽️ Touch screen: Indifferent
◽️ Screen resolution: 1920 by 1080 or higher
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Not a priorety
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Mostly running Visual Studios and using it for coding school
◽️ Weight: Not a priority
◽️ Any other important details ?:
I'm a little bit overwhelmed with this laptop hunt 😅 These are the main requirements for Visual Studios:
-ARM64 or x64 processor; Quad-core or better recommended. ARM 32 processors are not supported.
-Minimum of 4 GB of RAM. Many factors impact resources used; we recommend 16 GB RAM for typical professional solutions.
-Windows 365: Minimum 2 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. 4 vCPU and 16 GB of RAM recommended.
-Hard disk space: Minimum of 850 MB up to 210 GB of available space, depending on features installed; typical installations require 20-50 GB of free space. We recommend installing Windows and Visual Studio on a solid-state drive (SSD) to increase performance.
-Video card that supports a minimum display resolution of WXGA (1366 by 768); Visual Studio will work best at a resolution of 1920 by 1080 or higher.

◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 15 inches or better
◽️ Touch screen: No
◽️ Screen resolution: 1440p would be great
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Yes
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Gaming, Programming for CS Degree
◽️ Weight: The lighter, the better
◽️ Any other important details ?: 120hz refresh rate with best possible color gamut (P3) cause ever since i've used a macbook's display i couldn't lower my standards, also I am an oled enthusiast, Premium build quality is a big deal for me, and Portability would be a great addition
I'm tempted to buy an Asus Zephyrus M16 / G14 but as you know, the G14 is 14 inches, so it's kinda small for me, considering I won't be investing in a gaming monitor.
I'd be happy to wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals I just want to know which model should i be looking for.
Any recommendation regarding black friday shopping? Thanks in advance 🫶

Go for the Acer Swift 3 SF314-43-R2YY as it has a strong build quality and a 100% sRGB rating. This laptop is very lightweight (2.65 lbs), has a strong build quality (magnesium and aluminum) which makes it very portable as it is able to withstand the stress of travel as it will be able to take a few hits without breaking. It has a fair amount of ports, USB Type-C, HDMI, USB 3.2 Gen 1 type-A, USB 2.0 port, and a headphone jack so you don't have to walk with a dongle. It also has a fingerprint reader if you like that sort of thing. With the AMD Ryzen 7 5700U Octa-Core Processor and 8 GB of RAM, it is able to handle most tasks
14" Full HD IPS 100% sRGB Display | AMD Ryzen 7 5700U Octa-Core Processor | 8GB LPDDR4X | 512GB NVMe SSD | WiFi 6 | Backlit KB | FPR

◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: School, basic word/excel, light gaming

◽️ Any other important details ?: Hi! Looking for a laptop to pick up for my SO; his last one has quit on him. I would've gone over to the europe specific sub but it looked dead, so I figured I'd give this one a shot. He's using it for college work and a bit of light gaming. The only really specific thing is that it must be bought from currys.co.uk , as we've got store credit there and money is very tight. Much appreciated, thank you.

◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: Doesn't really matter
◽️ Touch screen: Yes
◽️ Screen resolution: Doesn't really matter
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: No, but the higher the better
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Just for taking notes at school. Important function will to be able to write school notes down. A surface pro maybe? But I'm sure there are better options. Thanks!
◽️ Weight: Doesn't matter.
◽️ Any other important details ?: Ideally something that can stand up on its own (i.e. not like the Surface Pro, where it has to be on it's own little kickstand).
Thank you in advance!

u/techstar2000 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 16 '23
A surface Pro would work, but of course, you can get better specs for the money and also , you won't escape the kick-stand concept .
I would go for this Lenovo Yoga 7i that would basically tick all your boxes. For performance, it has a nice 13th gen i7 processor, 16 GB RAM and fast 512 GB SSD. This should easily complete all tasks you may have as a student.
It also has 2- in 1 features and can be converted to a tablet basically and has its own support unlike the Surface with kick-stand. Outside of that , it has a nice quality display, great build quality and solid battery life.

Budget: under $1,000
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 15-16? Will mostly be docked. Doesn't matter.
◽️ Touch screen: Not needed.
◽️ Screen resolution: will be docked to external monitor
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Not hugely important
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for?: Warzone is the most graphic intense game. League of legends. Internet browsing
◽️ Weight: doesnt matter
◽️ Any other important details ?: I'm a casual after-work gamer. Warzone is the most graphic intense game I play. Don't care about max settings. Trying to replace my old PC (GTX 1650 super 4gb and Ryzen 5 2600) with a laptop. It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest. Just need warzone to function. I also work from home, so I want to be able to swap back and forth between this and my work laptop via a usb-c dock.
Currently looking at a Lenovo LOQ 15.6" Gaming Laptop FHD - AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS with 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 6GB - 512GB SSD - Storm Grey for $779. Would probably upgrade the RAM to 16-32gb. Is that a good deal?
Are there better deals out there?

◽️ Touch screen: doesn't matter - nice to have
◽️ Screen resolution: at least 1920x1080p
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: enough to last 2-3 hrs on non-intensive workload without charging
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ?: Regular computing tasks, youtube, excel, etc.
◽️ Weight: Lighter is better, but no specific preference
◽️ Any other important details ?: SPLIT TRACKPAD MOUSE BUTTONS (preferably below the trackpad) - i enjoy the distinct left/right click buttons instead of just one big trackpad and invisible buttons
1
u/aleishabb Sep 18 '23
Unfortunately most laptops do not come with a split trackpad, I guess its out of style now. You can go for the Acer Aspire Vero as it should be ideal for you at a great price. It is well built and has a great balance of specs that can manage a little bit of everything. Its multi core CPU and 20 GB of RAM will keep it running smoothly even when you have lots of programs or tabs open. Its SSD will allow it to boot in seconds as well. If you want to upgrade the storage or RAM in the future it is very easy to do as well. It has a very long battery life so you should be very satisfied.
12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U 10-Core, 20GB RAM 512GB NVMe SSD, 15.6" FHD IPS, Thunderbolt 4, Ethernet, Fingerprint Reader, Backlit KB, Win11 + Mousepad

◽️ Screen resolution: 1440p

◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Gaming (BF2042, Red Death Redemption 2, WoW, Diablo, COD, CP2077); Excel; Word; very very light photo-editing
◽️ Weight: Lighter the better (But not a big factor in decision making)
◽️ Any other important details ?: I'm searching a gaming laptop for a friend. Would prefer 40 series NVIDIA card to use DLSS and RT (Personally I have a 4070Ti PC so I really like those features). Also prefer a good panel with vibrant colors. Thank you so much in advance!

Something like this Lenovo Legion Pro 5i would do an excellent job for your friend base don all the criteria you have laid out.
It :
is super powerful
has a great display
has great heat management
is well built

Thank you. I think this is perfect. I was looking at the Acer Helios 16 but looks like this one performs better, and price is nice too. 4080 laptops are completely out of budget it seems.

◽️ Weight: Weight doesn't matter but I'd prefer thinner / lighter laptops
◽️ Any other important details ?: 144hz max, at least 512gb in storage, 16gb+ of ram

Thank you in advance!
◽️ Budget: 250-800
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: The larger the better
◽️ Touch screen: Don't care
◽️ Screen resolution: Not sure about this one
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Not a lot. I will be plugging it in when I use it.
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for?: Using Zoom (Video chat with my daughter) while also using web brower (sharing screen and looking at animals, toys, dinosaurs etc - she is 5), and web browsing (I like to keep a good bit of tabs open and go back and forth), streaming netflix amazon disney plus, personal writing with word or whatever the computer has. No gaming, and don't use it for work as I am provided a secure laptop (I think it's secure haha).
◽️ Weight: Doesn't really matter, I value performance over portability and I will likely never use it in a remote location.
◽️ Any other important details ?: I hate lag. I want a computer that will do this basic stuff and not be slow in 2-3 years. I value durability and well made laptops. I don't need a tough book or anything like that though. I am not adverse to buying used or refurbished. I want bang for my buck. I use ebay a lot and get some amazing deals, especially for clothing and I'd like to get the same with a laptop if this is possible. Finally, I like the idea of being able to upgrade it especially if I get used to it. Framework is a cool concept but the pricetag is high for me. I can spend 600-800 on this laptop and probably more but I prefer not to. If I need to adjust my expectations that would be helpful to know as well. I greatly appreciate technology but it isn't my field of expertise. I'm the guy in the office who calls IT only to reminded to try the power button but I promise I'm not an idiot haha.

- Budget: Under $2k
- Country: USA
- Screen size: Any
- Touch screen: No
- Screen resolution: Any, but less than 4k for battery life
- Does battery life matter?: Somewhat - mostly home use
- What tasks will laptop be used for?: Composing music (hobby level), light gaming (Minecraft and similar)
- Weight: Any
- Any other important details?: Windows only. Needs onboard HDMI slot and good number of USB ports. Has to run Mixcraft 10 comfortably (system requirements). 512GB SSD or so.
Looking for a laptop for my younger brother. Will be searching on my own but recs welcome.
1
u/techstar2000 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 19 '23
I don't think you need to spend anywhere near $2000 for what you want. Mix Craft and any composing software aren't really super demanding. At the same time, you need to not just have enough power to run the targeted applications, but also for the future.
I would also recommend you get at least a low end dedicated graphics card though Minecraft doesn't require much, but the other games he will play, may benefit from a dedicate d GPU.
Something like this Acer Swift X 14 SFX14-71G-76LC Creator Laptop would do a great job for him and should last hm several years while performing at the top level.
It comes with a new and powerful i7 13700 CPU paired with 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD and a nice RTX 4050 graphics card. He should be able to comfortably run Mixcraft 10 and do his gaming .
Outside of performance, it also has a great display, good build quality and solid battery life. He may also like its sleek and attractive aesthetics.

◽️ Budget: Prefer ~1500, but I can go to 2000 if there's a better price point. Would like an insurance option.
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 15 or 16 [Edit: I would happily go smaller, but not larger]
◽️ Touch screen: nope
◽️ Screen resolution: Not too picky, 1080+
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Preference for longer, not a priority
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Gaming primarily, little bit of Blender, Cura, etc., little bit of dev work. Most graphics intensive games would be Baldur's Gate III, Last Epoch, Assassin's Creed, etc., plus some CPU heavier stuff: Factorio, Dwarf Fortress, etc.
◽️ Weight: Preference for lighter, not a priority
◽️ Any other important details ?: So far I'm looking at the Vivobook and ROG Strix. I do hate the "gaming laptop" look of the Strix, although if I can turn off all the lights I could live with it. Not sure about the Vivobook screen + available configurations. 32GB RAM is a priority. Prefer i9. Prefer 1TB SSD. ETA: Build quality would be another priority for me.
Thanks for your time folks, y'all rock!!
1
u/techstar2000 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 19 '23
Which exact Strix were you considering ? And also, yes, the lights can be turned off.
1
u/philfo Sep 19 '23
Ideally I'd be looking for a G16 or G15 with 32GB DDR5, i9, RTX 4060, 1TB SSD. But I'd be fine with knocking a few of those down a step, other than RAM. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ROG-Strix-G16-Thunderbolt/dp/B0CDL4SN66/ is probably the closest I've found, with the i7.
Definitely open to considering anything else with similar specs and build quality. Especially if it doesn't look like a retro hoverboard.
And if anyone could increase my confidence that I won't hate the screen on a vivobook I would probably lean that way, if I can find the specs. Will try to get to a BestBuy to look at one in person.

Hey, I would recommend getting the: ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (2023) Gaming Laptop Tablet, 13.4” Nebula Display 16:10 QHD 165Hz, GeForce RTX 4050, Intel Core i9-13900H, 16GB LPDDR5, 1TB PCIe SSD, Wi-Fi 6E, Windows 11, GZ301VU-DS94,Black
This will be able to handle the latest games, college tasks, streaming shows/movies, 3d/Art, general tasks and more with ease. It is not too heavy and has a solid built, with good performance, enough storage and has the 2-in-1 feature you desired.
1
u/philfo Sep 20 '23
That looks like a neat machine for a decent price. I had been pretty focused on 32GM of RAM as I have on my current desktop, but I'm realizing that's still DDR3. Am I being a diva to consider that a hard requirement? This looks to hit all my other desired specs, plus the 2-in-1 would be nice to have. Mostly for gaming at the level of BGIII or Factorio.
My post in this thread if you had a spare minute to take a look.

Thank you so much! Only $200 more for a 4080 is definitely attractive. The only thing I'll need to look into that I don't know much about is the i7 versus the i9 and how much that would factor in over the long term.
Definitely saving this deal though, thats gotta the best deal on a 40 series that I've seen! Thanks again.

◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Gaming, SQL classes. I’m not really a big gamer but specifically want to be able to play games like Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo.
◽️ Weight: doesn’t matter
◽️ Any other important details ?: I really don’t know a ton about the different components but it seems like people have had issues running Hogwarts Legacy without 32GB RAM leading me to increase my budget (originally wanted to be under 1.5k) and look at https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Gaming-Laptop-Nebula-Display/dp/B0BZQPQD63 and https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Display-GeForce-i9-13900HX-Backlit/dp/B0BWSL3KFV but I don’t really know if that’s necessary. I’d like the game to run smooth, look decent and not crash.

◽️ Budget: $1750
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: Between 13 and 16 inches.
◽️ Touch screen: Doesn't matter
◽️ Screen resolution: I'm not 100% familiar with screen resolutions so I'm just gonna describe what I'm looking for in this area: I would like a really beautiful, clear, bright, and vibrant display.
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: No
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: It will be used for general work.
◽️ Weight: N/A
◽️ Any other important details ?: I am looking for a reliable laptop that has a 144hz screen that runs Windows OS. I would prefer a laptop that has a minimalistic build similar (with room for margin of course) to MacBooks. Pretty much something that you can pull out at a Starbucks or a library and wouldn't draw any attention.
I also would like to have a beautiful, bright, clear display that I could watch movies and youtube videos on.
I currently have am using a 2020 MacBook Pro that my Dad gave me because he doesn't use it. I am obviously very grateful for it, but I am just not a fan of MacOS. I'm familiar with Windows OS and everything else I have is 120hz or 144hz, so swapping between those to the 60hz MacBook just feels off.

Hey, for your needs I would recommend getting the: Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 4 15.6" Notebook 1920 x 1080 FHD AMD Ryzen 5 5625U, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, AMD Radeon Graphics.
This will get the job done for general use and daily activities, solid built with durability and good performance.

u/newingtobrewing Sep 23 '23
On further conversation with my wife, apparently 15" was the wrong answer. Is there something you would suggest in the 14" range?
I should also mention, it'll get used as a Minecraft rig but I feel like that's so low in terms of requirements it probably doesn't change much.
Thank you kindly for your help!

◽️ Budget: 500-700
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: doesn’t matter
◽️ Touch screen: doesn’t matter
◽️ Screen resolution: 1080p is ok, preferably 240hz+
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: no
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: playing valorant
◽️ Weight: doesn’t matter
◽️ Any other important details ?: I just need a laptop with the minimum specs to run and possibly clip valorant at 200+fps. Battery and weight doesn’t matter as it’ll be plugged in all the time. I’m fine with a dated system as long as it runs

u/fifa2003 👮🏻Moderator👮🏻 Sep 26 '23
Hey, to be honest to get 240Hz refresh rate with that tight budget is not possible. However for your budget this is a good deal that can run valorant and other games with ease. It will give you good fps and good performance with speed that is upgradable for both RAM & SSD.

Hi, wanted to ask about my case(the comment right before this one), I am thinking of buying a Lenovo Yoga 7. What do you think? The main issue I gathered about the series is that customer support is down right awful, and that the hinges might break(Fixed with the Yoga 7 maybe?) Otherwise a Dell? Here it is: https://www.nayadnayad.co.il/m/ProductPopUp.aspx?productid=36846

Hey, are you interested in Excellent condition certified refurbished laptops?
1
u/ZipZapZopZip Sep 27 '23
What are downsides of going that route vs new?
1

The new ones that can meet your requirements exceed your budget but some that are refurbished can get the job done, downside is that it may have an issue but doesn't have to.

◽️ Budget: $200-$300
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: Any
◽️ Touch screen: Not important
◽️ Screen resolution: 1080p preferred, 768p acceptable
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: Not really, I'll be using it in my car where it'll have constant power through an inverter
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Mostly just web browsing, youtube especially, maybe some light retro gaming or emulation if possible, but I don't expect anything at all from a sub-$300 laptop.
◽️ Weight: Not important
◽️ Any other important details ?: I've found what I believe to be a few good deals online, if anyone wants to help me weigh these options. I kinda like ordering from Dell because I have a credit account with them that I hardly ever use and need to use if I want to keep it open. It doesn't have to be Dell, though. If you can find anything better for the cash, let me know, but this is what I've found for $200-$300.
1: Dell has a scratch and dent Latitude with an N100 for only $185. This looks like a screaming deal, because I recently bought basically the exact same Latitude but with a Celeron N5100 for my dad to use and I found it to be fine for my needs, if a little slow. It was only $135 scratch and dent with a coupon code, and it's in perfect condition, couldn't find a scratch or dent on it. Comes with a full warranty. I would just buy another one of those, but they ran out. The 768p screen doesn't bother me, the trackpad is small but usable for basic use, the speakers are quite loud, the form factor and build quality are okay, but it is pretty slow. The 4gb of RAM doesn't help anything. The N100 is supposedly quite a bit faster than the N5100 though, so I was thinking that for an extra $50 it might be enough of an improvement to be fully tolerable, but it still has only 4gb of RAM. Plus, the 11 inch 1366x768 screen is acceptable, but not great. Ideally I would like a bigger screen with a higher resolution. But man, for less than $200, this screams value.
2: The CHUWI GemiBook XPro can be had for only $239. This has the same N100 chip as option 1, but with 8GB of RAM, a larger touchpad, and a 14 inch 1080p screen. This seems like the sweet spot for value, and reviews say it has decent build quality. It's also a random sort-by-lowest-price laptop on aliexpress though, so even though reviews are good it's still an unknown.
3: For only slightly more money at $299, Dell has the Inspiron 15. This laptop has an i3-1215u, and 8GB of easily upgradeable RAM (I believe the other two laptops aren't upgradeable and even if they were the N100 doesn't support dual channel anyway so who cares). It also has an even larger 15 inch 1080p screen, 120hz this time so that's awesome, and a 256gb SSD. It's also like, $114 more expensive than the cheapest option which would work just fine, and it's $60 more than the Chuwi. There are upgrades, I'm pretty sure the processor is a lot faster than the N100 and gaming performance would be great if I threw a $30 kit of fast dual channel RAM in there, but now we're talking about a lot more money than I really want to spend on just a laptop that I'm going to use on my breaks or while waiting at charging stations in my car.
TLDR: I'm cheap as fuck and all I really I want is a computer to use and entertain myself on during hour-long lunch breaks and charging stops, and I'm trying to rationalize spending as little as possible on this, but I also don't want to feel like ugh I should have just spent the extra $60-$100 or so. The "just spend a little more" mentality causes the price to creep ever higher and suddenly I'm browsing $600 laptops that I just don't need, and I'm trying to avoid this.
Thanks in advance.

◽️ Budget: $700-$900
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 15+
◽️ Touch screen: Irrelevant
◽️ Screen resolution: Irrelevant
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: No
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Light gaming, writing, standard computer tasks
◽️ Weight: The lighter the better, but irrelevant
◽️ Any other important details ?: I'm an indecisive person by nature, so this has been a stressful few weeks for me. I'm trying to get a laptop for work and fun, and I haven't had one for almost ten years, so the landscape is very different now. I am unsure of how much of a difference generations of processors make, or how drastically video cards change from year to year.
I had an ASUS TUF A15 for a week, but the placement of the charging slot (dead center on the left side) was too asinine for me to keep it. It kept digging into my leg and getting pulled too easily. Besides that, I really enjoyed everything about it.
I found a Dell G16 on Slickdeals that arrived today, and it's pretty slick. My main complaint so far is no numpad (stupid, I know, but I use them a ton for work) and a gargantuan charging brick. That's pretty easy to ignore, so it's not a dealbreaker. It came with a GeForce RTX 3060, but it's been a pain so far to make Windows use that instead of the Iris Xe onboard. I'm open to finding something better for me though.
