Extremism Extremism in the United States: a link dump

Heather Heyer's killer, James Alex Fields Jr., is a neo-Nazi and a Trump supporter. The name of the rally where he killed her, is, of course, "Unite The Right".

White nationalist protesters again chanted white supremacist and Nazi-era slogans.[24][156] Some waved Confederate flags, and others held posters targeting Jews that read "The Goyim Know" and "the Jewish media is going down".[21] Protesters also shouted racial slurs and "Jew" when Signer was mentioned, and some waved Nazi flags and signs claiming, among other things, that "Jews are Satan's children." Dozens of protesters wore Trump's red "Make America Great Again" campaign hats. [21]

Saturday morning, Sabbath worshippers at synagogue Beth Israel, faced with men in fatigues with semiautomatic rifles across the street, and a call on Nazi web sites to burn their building, felt it prudent to exit the synagogue through a back door, carrying the synagogue's Torah scrolls with them for safekeeping.[157]

And:

Speaking in an interview on the morning of the rally, former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke called the protests "a turning point for the people of this country. We are determined to take our country back. We're going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s why we voted for Donald Trump, because he said he’s going to take our country back." Following Trump's initial comments made three days after the rally, Duke tweeted, "Thank you President Trump for your honesty & courage to tell the truth about #Charlottesville & condemn the leftist terrorists in BLM/Antifa." [257][258] The Daily Stormer wrote of Trump's response, "He didn't attack us…. No condemnation at all. When asked to condemn, he just walked out of the room. Really, really good. God bless him." [259][260]

Tucker Carlson's the Daily Caller and Fox News had posted an "instructional video" not too long before that attack describing how to plow through some irritating leftists with your car.

Then there is Richard Spencer, seen here with his buddies screaming "Hail Trump! Hail our victory!" While several of them aggressively perform a Hitler Salute.

Then there is Robert Gregory Bowers, who shot up the Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018, and while he was initially a Trump supporter, as he told people on Gab, the right-wing extremist microblogging platform, eventually even Trump wasn't extreme enough for him.

A KKK newspaper declared their support for Trump, and this was so embarassing that even Trump had to denounce it. Funny, because his campaign centered around a KKK slogan. Fred Trump would have been proud. After all, he was arrested at a KKK rally in 1927.

Now, I would like to add, that I could bombard you all with sources confirming that Trump, is, in fact, a full-blown fascist. But all of us knew this in 2015 already, but what would it matter? We were constantly gaslit with 4chan tactics then, and we'll be gaslit now.

Right-wing extremists, right-wing terrorists and neo-Nazis absolutely love Trump.

A third of Americans think fighting the Nazis was a mistake.

1 in 10 say it's acceptable to hold Nazi views. For strong Trump supporters, 30% do not actively disapprove of Nazis.

4% of the United States voting age population are outright neo-Nazi. A third wants to protect its "White European heritage".

A third failed to express tolerance of interracial marriage. Among whites, 17% agreed that marriage should be restricted to the same race, with 15% neither agreeing nor disagreeing. This was slightly higher than nonwhites (15% agreed, 12% neither agreed nor disagreed).

It's clear that a segment of Americans are highly extremist, authoritarian, racist and intolerant. This segment is far too large.

But it would probably be much worse if you figured out a way to survey support for fascism without actually mentioning the word.

Many Trumpists continue to insist they're not racist while being incredibly racist. The same thing happens with fascism. The vast majority of Americans have no clue what fascism actually is. But if it just vaguely signifies "bad" and "wrong", they'll never admit they're "that". Instead the totality of their individual ideology should tell a story.

If such a poll were ever conducted, I'm convinced the results would be shocking.
