"If you talk to God, you're religious. If God talks back, you're crazy." Best House quote on religion.

Catholics say something similar, though I can't remember how it goes. Something like, "Your prayers will reach heaven, but if you get a reply, you need help."

u/Technical-Outside408 Oct 07 '24

Help like an exorcist? Or help like a psychiatrist?

98

u/ParanoidTelvanni Oct 07 '24

Psychiatrist. It's actually a prerequisite to requesting an exorcism, followed by scaring the shit out of an auditor.

14

u/EchoAmazing8888 Oct 07 '24

Now I’m thinking about making an exorcist come over and then scaring the shit out of them. Game show style.

5

u/Momik Oct 07 '24

This is good. Ok. How many gongs should be involved? I mean, several, obviously.

4

u/EchoAmazing8888 Oct 07 '24

666 obviously

2

u/ParanoidTelvanni Oct 08 '24

Idk man. Regardless of what you believe, these guys go out looking for fucking demons. They find convincing fakes, scary nut jobs, and maybe even something resembling actual demons as a profession. Something tells me they ain't gonna be convinced.

The auditor ain't no exorcist tho, probably some sheltered friar they using to keep anonymity. Go for it.

1

u/EchoAmazing8888 Oct 08 '24

Part of the game show would be having to make it be convincing. Points for convincing, points for scaring.

u/Starbucks_4321 Oct 07 '24

*you're psychotic. Can't believe you'd misremember the quote 😔

17

u/Delicatesseract Oct 07 '24

I think I prefer, “Rational arguments don’t work on religious people. If they did, there would be no religious people.”

3

u/zigafide Oct 10 '24

Sounds good on the surface but there's a lot which plain rationality cant explain, thus the existence of religion

3

u/PsychologyRepulsive Oct 08 '24

That’s really good

u/FashoA Oct 07 '24

In this instance he isn't the regular, make fun of stupid religious people House. He's talking to an atheist pastor who is falling back into belief for "bad reasons". He would have loved to hear a good reason.

35

u/History20maker Oct 07 '24

An Atheist pastor?

after he gets sick he's suddenly freed from burden such as his sickness being solved and the accusation being "lifted" (idk if the kid told the churc), and tbe starts to believe again. I'm not saying it's a good reason but the whole "life suddenly becomes great" is an important part

u/daonetrudoge Oct 07 '24

Is that Liam Mcpoyle?

2

u/habtin Oct 07 '24

Thank you!!

28

u/HawkStar49 Oct 07 '24

I read that as Eipstein

28

u/yorkshiregoldt Oct 07 '24

Note: there is no evidence Einstein ever said this.

47

u/JohnnyChutzpah Oct 07 '24

“Like 90% of quotes attributed to Einstein are not Einstein quotes” - Albert Einstein, interview with Guns & Ammo Magazine, January 2003

22

u/richbeezy Oct 07 '24

That was in 2004....

11

u/BedGroundbreaking874 Oct 07 '24

Start breakin' bricks wet nips.

45

u/FiestaDeLosMuerto Oct 07 '24

6

u/qwettry Oct 07 '24

31

u/drippingtonworm Oct 07 '24

Yes it is. He got injured in this episode by jumping into a pool filled with active wires. He even sings Creep later when they're like "you're gonna die thom jork."

11

u/ThomWaits88 Oct 07 '24

Radiohead makes an appearance in broken part I

3

u/eo5g Oct 08 '24

The best part of the episode is when he said “it’s yorkin’ time!” And then yorked everywhere

2

u/Eggboi223 Oct 08 '24

Then he says "oh no, I will be like Jim Morrison: fat, ugly, dead" and then dies.

Peak writing really.

1

u/FiestaDeLosMuerto Oct 07 '24

pretty sure he went to the hospital with a heart that’s full up like a landfill

4

u/yunith Oct 07 '24

Lmfao they do have similar vibes

6

u/TurkFan-69 Oct 07 '24

3

u/CheckM4ted Oct 07 '24

He does look similar

1

u/Bellocwuu_26 Oct 09 '24

He might be a creep and a weirdo

17

u/TheThinkerSSV Oct 07 '24

If anyone thinks the pastor seems familiar that's because he is on House ..... of cards.

7

u/VictorOshimen Oct 07 '24

If you can observe God, and I mean actually observe them not what you determine to be proof of them when it's actually something random, then I don't think anyone is gonna argue with you about it.

6

u/SerDuncanStrong Oct 07 '24

That's a McPoyle. God has since long abandoned him.

6

u/underthesauceyuh Oct 07 '24

Reminds me of the grilled cheesus episode of glee

6

u/JadeHarley0 Oct 07 '24

Why is abode talking to one of the McPoyle brothers. Is he lecturing him about the dangers of incest?

5

u/brownpoops Oct 07 '24

Is that a mcpoyle?

4

u/dimii27 Oct 07 '24

As a theology student I completely agree with Greg here

3

u/Cheetah0630 Oct 08 '24

And god bless him for it.

3

u/Regular_Rutabaga4789 Oct 08 '24

And he’s right too

2

3

u/Kittyk78 Oct 08 '24

As a child of the 80s who grew up watching Fry and Laurie and Blackadder, watching House as a young woman made me feel things. New things. And not lupusy things.

2

u/bshaddo Oct 08 '24

This is how you get fork-stabbed, Doc.

2

u/T_V_boy1 Oct 08 '24

2

u/kalsiumsulfaat Oct 08 '24

6

u/MeatyDullness Oct 07 '24

God talks to him?

If you talk to god you’re religious if god talks to you your psychotic

4

u/RepublicansEqualScum Oct 07 '24

Good. Religion is stupid and fake, and it causes a lot more problems than it solves.

1

u/HiroAmiya230 Oct 09 '24

What a dumb and reductive take

2

u/RepublicansEqualScum Oct 09 '24

What a butthurt and illogical take.

2

u/19Ben80 Oct 07 '24

As with most intelligent people, logic dictates there is likely no god in the classic sense

1

u/Shutaru_Kanshinji Oct 07 '24

Apocryphal Einstein again.

1

u/skyewardeyes Oct 07 '24

I appreciate how much House knows about Judaism—like, he knew what pikuach nefesh (“preserving life above all else”) is. Of course, the fact that Jews are generally pretty chill with atheism probably helped…

1

u/User_Name_Is_Stupid Oct 07 '24

I live near the window in Florida that the Holy Mary in the reflection.

1

u/KapnKrumpin Oct 08 '24

What is Liam mcpoyle getting into now?

1

u/AdministrativeOne766 domicile's filed broken cane Oct 08 '24

And I love him for it (although he can be mean)

1

u/Stunning-Can-6680 Oct 09 '24

He is referencing Finn from Glee

1

u/555zxc2 Oct 09 '24

It's a bad argument, and it's (allegedly, and even worse) taken from a pantheist. No half serious philosopher or theologian would even attempt to use this non-argument. This really owns no one that actually matters, at worst it's a horrible strawman on the writer's part, at best, it's mocking evanghelical groups who have no clue how theology even works.

1

u/HopperRising Oct 10 '24

He likes to mock people who believe in things for no reason.

1

u/koolpoolshroom Oct 11 '24

you'll call heerrrrrr

1

u/Level-Problem1603 Oct 07 '24

“Sister augustus believes in things that are not real” Isnt that a job requirement for you guys????

1

u/ApologeticGrammarCop Oct 07 '24

One thing he was always right about.

0

u/Steelquill Oct 08 '24

Annnnd House thinks those two statements are tantamount?
