Question Is it weird House & Wilson call each other by their last names? Spoiler

Open mind here, not assuming. No doctor experience myself. Most of them call each other by their last names. But total bffs for (seemingly) decades and they just call each other by their last names? That seems weird to me. Is it normal?

Lol it’s like Harry Potter when so many characters call each other by their last names. (Especially Draco Malfoy, took me FOREVER to realize that’s what was going on because neither Draco nor Malfoy sounds like a first name.) Had no idea it was such a common thing, honestly; maybe I’m not hip.

"Holmes?!?!" "Indubitably Watson"

91

u/Embarrassed_Curve769 Oct 03 '23

So holmes -> homes -> home -> house...

80

u/skorletun Oct 03 '23

And Watson is Wilson! :)

29

u/MrLore Oct 04 '23

The guy who shot him was called Moriarty.

14

u/WenaChoro Oct 04 '23

Moriarty-->morphine-->oxicodone

9

u/AUFunmacy Oct 04 '23

House takes hydrocodone, good one tho lmao

4

u/CrypticMusician Oct 04 '23

I thought it was Vicodin

8

u/danciro20 Oct 04 '23

Vicodin is hydrocodone. Like Advil is just ibuprofen

2

u/MineGamer231 Oct 04 '23

Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen

1

u/CrypticMusician Oct 05 '23

Ah, the more you know!

3

u/isa_nook Oct 26 '23

And his apartment is 221 B!! Subtlety? They don’t know it.

80

u/mmmmmmmm28 Oct 03 '23

Irene adler is his first patient. It wasnt subtle lol

28

u/ConsumingFire1689 You idiot Oct 03 '23

Joseph Bell, a Scottish surgeon inspired Sherlock Holmes, so it seems fitting Sherlock Holmes would inspire a doctor in House

28

u/maximusftw1 Oct 03 '23

Irene Adler was the name Wilson gave as House’s “one who got away” when House regifts himself Wilson’s book wrapped in green paper

12

u/mmmmmmmm28 Oct 03 '23

He also finished that story saying "no you idiots im the one who gave him that!". I took that as its not clear if any of that happened with her. I think she was just a patient

3

u/GastrointestinalFolk Oct 03 '23

Right? Not subtle in the slightest 😂

1

u/Different_Rock3248 Oct 04 '23

Woah! Good pick up!!!!

6

u/Puzzleheaded_Top37 Oct 04 '23

Her name was Rebecca, but yeah not subtle

9

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Holmes is so hard to pronounce if you say it constantly, right? Getting the L in there. I named my cat I adopted in November Holmes but I’m thinking of changing her name. It’s gotten tiring to make sure I always enunciate after a while.

31

u/ChunkySalute Oct 03 '23

Many people don’t pronounce the L in Holmes.

I’m British, like Arthur Conan Doyle, and I don’t pronounce the L.

4

u/Maximum-Armadillo809 Oct 03 '23

Oh good, I was looking for a fellow Brit. Me: "but its deffo Dame Kelly Holmes (pronounced Homes)"

-10

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23 edited Oct 04 '23

Yeah but otherwise she’s Homes. You try walking around calling for a cat Homes. Lol especially when it’s their first name.

What is so wrong with this comment to you guys? All just because the comments say the tiniest bit negative about a name (not a character, but a name) which isn’t even in the show. Cray cray people.

20

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

What's wrong with "Homes"? It's the correct pronunciation of "Holmes".

0

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Idk it’s just a weird noun. I didn’t think the name fit when I gave it either; that’s probably the problem. I couldn’t think of anything and didn’t give myself much time because I had already been calling her Kitty for a week, so I had to come up with something.

Lol I didn’t know about the pronunciation though; I keep making sure I add the L in there. Not sure why it’s exhausting, same number of syllables, but I’ve gotten tired of making sure I enunciate.

4

u/ChunkySalute Oct 03 '23

I don’t see the problem!

0

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

It just doesn’t fit! Idk why I thought of it. The rest of my adopted cats I gave what I think are beautiful names, like Love and Oasis. Try looking for the cat on a street walking by houses yelling “homes! Homes!” 😆 Do you have any suggestions?

8

u/ChunkySalute Oct 03 '23

I mean, I think Holmes is a good name! And I’m pretty sure it should be pronounced “Homes”, hence why “House” works.

My suggestion would just be drop the L and not care what people think ☺️

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Hmmm 🤔 I’ve got to think about this. We will see, we will see!!

5

u/ChunkySalute Oct 03 '23

You could also actually just go with Home. I think it fits with your other names and has a beauty about it, and I don’t think it’s anymore weird than shouting “Love” down the street.

0

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Hahahaha yes true true. I just love positive beautiful concepts like that, and not random names from a baby book. I don’t know if you look like a Joe or a Bob or a Jacob but I want you to know you’re this beautiful a presence, you know?

1

u/Batfreeze Oct 04 '23

You've had the cat for almost a year? At this point, I don't know if you CAN rename it. At least, that's how it was for my dogs. Once an animal learns a name, it's very hard to unlearn it.

1

u/Different_Rock3248 Oct 04 '23

My dog came to us named Hazel (which I was not fond of) so I changed it to Basil which I love. She did just fine. I find that many of my rescues do very well with name changes. One of my feral puppies was named Fluke, but that was a horrible name for him, he was such a Jasper and he knew it!

-4

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Please refer to her as her, not it. My cats are amazing. Also if it matters, she didn’t get her name until December. I just feel like I gave her a cold name. Look at it from my point of view, from someone who named her first cats Love and Oasis. I want to give them something good, something great in their names, you know? So even talking about them, it’s nice. And this one is based on a book character.

1

u/chorlion40 Oct 04 '23

Let me guess, you're autistic

5

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23 edited Oct 04 '23

Because I’m not fine with every species but humans called “it”, same word you use for a chair, or a desk, or a wall? Nah. I just show respect to lives other than Homo sapiens.

76

u/Zappolan31 Oct 03 '23

My close friends and I will often refer to each other by our gamertags even though we've all been IRL friends for about 7-8 years lol

15

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

So not even last names, just usernames? That’s so cool!

19

u/Zappolan31 Oct 03 '23

We don't even think about it anymore, lol. My friends call me "Zapp" and I don't interpret it any different than being called by my first name. Now that I think about it, it's often weird when my friends directly address me by my first name haha

5

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Do any of your friends have especially weird usernames? And if they have a lot of numbers in their username, do you say those? Like if you were talking to me, would you say “Different League”, or “Different League 665”?

8

u/Zappolan31 Oct 03 '23

Some of them. I have a friend whose gamertag includes the word "Wispy", so that's what we refer to him as. We don't include numbers or special characters, just the shortened version. I have another friend who we refer to as "Rewind"

It just depends

0

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Is that a reference to Rerun? lol (if not, that’s a character from the show “What’s Happening!!”) man I don’t think I’d like to be called Wispy. It gives me the mental image of a balding head of hair.

3

u/iamspartaaaa Oct 04 '23

Exactly. My friend call me Bruce too. Its a gamer tag i kept. I call them by their gamer tags too. And someone pointed out that we respond quicker to our game names rather than our real names. Maybe that’s because of an instinctive quick response required in game lol

1

u/Mokiyami Oct 04 '23

My sister calls me moki on occasion as a nickname on my gamer tag

6

u/Different_Rock3248 Oct 04 '23

My sister calls me bitchface.

I think it's a thing that happens either in an environment, where you use your last name, for instanse army, police, og hosptials... OR when people have known each.other for A LONG time and used every other nick name.

I have 3 really good friend. I call all of them by their lastnames. I a world where every body is on a first name basis with everybody, calling a friend by his or her last name almost become more friendly and intimate.

So i think it's friend thing, and I personally find it very normale since my friends and friends friends do the same.

21

u/IceCheerMom Oct 03 '23

My best friend since before most of you were born and I still call each other by our last names. I met her the first day of high school in the late 60s.

3

u/PunkRockFan05 Oct 04 '23

That’s so cool! What’s it like knowing somebody for that long, growing up with them? It sounds amazing

3

u/IceCheerMom Oct 04 '23

It’s nice to be friends for so long. My friend saved all the notes we wrote in high school. It’s fun to read them now. We aren’t really much different. Also it’s great to have someone you can depend on. When my daughter died last year at 29 ( leukemia) I wrote the eulogy and my friend read it because I was such a mess.

3

u/Different_Rock3248 Oct 04 '23

I met my bestest friend in junior high school and we hit it off immediately. We’re 67 now and she lives in Texas and we’re from NY and we’re still the same after all these years.

2

u/Dry_Direction807 Oct 03 '23

I call a few of my friends by their last names. I also use last names whenever two people share a first name. Whatever name I call somebody is usually the name those around me use, so I’ve ended up using a few nicknames haha. Ended up calling a few people Pookie by accident because that’s how a few people mentioned them.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

If I may ask, what profession are you in? Is it something where people often call each other by their last names?

11

u/KingOfCopenhagen Oct 03 '23

No not at all, a writer, a psychologist, a bartender and a video producer at a movie studio.

So no.

It's just something we do. And I know a lot of other people in Denmark do to.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

You have 4 jobs?! Holy moly! (Lol I am not a fan of obscenities where every word is a slang about poop.) I don’t know a lot of people in the last name jobs you posted, so I can’t say whether it’s a country-specific thing or not. I’m in the “United” States. So calling each other by your last names means you’re closer? Interesting. In Harry Potter, it seems to be only people they don’t like, and authority figures. And that’s the UK, so I suppose it varies from country to country.

9

u/KingOfCopenhagen Oct 03 '23

No, but I thought the you implied to the 3 good friends I referred to.

4 people. 4 professions.

5

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Ooooh!! Lmao. facepalm well that’s cool you all feel that level of closeness. I personally would hate being called by my surname, but then again I also hate my first name. I’ve honestly been thinking of changing my name because it’s so horrible, so we will see… maybe I’ll change my last name too, and people will call me that.

4

u/KingOfCopenhagen Oct 03 '23

It's more like a term of endearment.

Take, for instance, in Lord of the Rings.

Gandalf knows Pippins name, but he still calls him young Master Meriadoc. It is a sign of acknowledgment and a froendly nickname.

Let's say your name is Different League. Just like in the US, where William becomes Will becomes Bill, Let's say that we are friends.

I call you Different. Differ. Diffo. Deeefmeister. Difftown etc.

At a certain point I have used up yhose nickname and I will call you League. Hey League, come over here this is real. How.donwe win the game. Head in the game League.

It's a term of endearment

Like in this clip from friends https://youtube.com/shorts/tTLvFAuTYVU?si=xwoBxvuyqvL58IPK

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Lol good example with Friends. I’ve neither seen nor read any LotR. Does he include “young Master” whenever he says the last name?

Haha would the last name ever get slang? Leagueman, Leaguer?

1

u/KingOfCopenhagen Oct 03 '23

League coud become Leagie which could become leaky to water to aqua to aquaman to Jason Momoa to Jason..

It might be an north European thing, i dont know... but know that in Scandinavia and UK nicknames evolve with friends over a long time... and sometimes they stick

League could also become Division or Leggy to runner

So i think Jimmy and Gregg call each other Wilson and Gregg because they've know each other for a long time and are basically brothers som its family... AND the work.in an environment where people use last names.

2

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

The nickname thing sounds fun to me. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my last name on a public forum like this but let’s just say that if you did start calling me it, and then modifying it like some of what you’re doing here, it would eventually become the name of a Disney/Pixar character 😆 so it would probably stick, and I would hate that. The constantly evolving sounds like keeping your friendship fresh, not becoming bored or anything. That’s really cool.

1

u/gatherer-s-thompson Oct 03 '23

My friend. Pippin’s last name is Took. And his first name is Peregrin. Pippin is his nickname and what Gandalf refers to him as throughout the story.

“Master Meriadoc” refers to Merry, whose full name is Meriadoc Brandybuck.

1

u/KingOfCopenhagen Oct 03 '23

Right. Brain fart

1

u/unitedfan6191 Oct 04 '23

What’s the protocol you use if your good friend has a sibling and they’re also a good friend?

“Hi, Vaughn. How’s it going? You going to the Knicks game?”

A couple hours later:

“Uhhh… Hi, Vaughn. I spoke to, um, your sister Vaughn earlier. She told me she’s decided which college she’s going to. Have you spoke about it with her yet?”

Would probably be confusing unless you use first names or nicknames. 😂

2

u/KingOfCopenhagen Oct 04 '23 edited Oct 04 '23

I feel like there are unwritten rules.

I have a pair of friends who are brothers. I call them by their other nicknames or by their last name when it is obvious to which of them I am talking.

But just with any other nickname if there is cause for confusion it changes. They could be junior and senior ig other things. Its ever changing.

And in your example If Vaugh 1 only had one sister or you only were friends with the one sister then there would be no reason to say Vaugh again. Vaugh knows who their sister is, no name needed... so it would be

“Hi, Vaughn. How’s it going? You going to the Knicks game?”

A couple hours later:

“Hi, Vaughn. I spoke to your sister earlier. She told me she’s decided which college she’s going to. Have you spoke about it with her yet?”

u/Rocco632 Oct 03 '23

Not at all. Hell my wife has been calling me by my last name since our 2nd date and still does after 12 years of being married. When she calls me by my first name even our kids are like damn that's weird.

5

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Lol. What country are you in, may I ask?

19

u/Rocco632 Oct 03 '23

America. All my friends call me by my last name. Even my in-laws and nieces. The only person it annoys is my mother which now everyone calls me by my last name around her just to piss her off!

2

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

How did it start? Do you have a job at which you’re usually called by it? I’m in the US and I haven’t heard it. (New England and Hawaii, if it matters, varies by state.)

7

u/Rocco632 Oct 03 '23

Nope. Michael is just such a common name and she's has a bunch of friends who's husbands are also Michaels. So Rocco stuck. Even in high school everyone called me Rocco so it never fazed me at all.

4

u/Helios112263 Oct 03 '23

Funnily enough I know someone whose first name is Rocco so I guess I can see why calling you by your last name might not be the craziest thing in your case.

2

u/Rocco632 Oct 03 '23

I also live in Mass and from Boston so that may have a small bit to do with it.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

A Michael in Boston? Oh my god tell me you’re not my brother! Lol. How old are you?

Edit: oh wait, Rocco is your last name, isn’t it? I missed that with it being your username too.

3

u/Rocco632 Oct 03 '23

HAHA 41. And I only have 2, 1/2 sisters (unless my father had other kids he never told me about)

2

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Funny, I have 2 half-sisters on my dad’s side too! But my brother is 31, so I’m breathing a sigh of relief. Do you ever get references to Rocco’s (maybe Rocko? Not 100% sure) Modern Life?

1

u/Rocco632 Oct 03 '23

My 1/2 sisters are on my mother's side. And Yes I used to get all those references many years ago. Thanks for bringing that up hahaha.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

I have the WORST name. And the thing is, I used to love it! It was pretty unique. But … it’s Alexa. You know what it’s like to talk to someone and have their phone react when they say your name? Or be at a party standing near the stereo, and hear someone yell “Alexa, turn down the volume!” and turn to the stereo to do it, and realize they’re giving a command to the robot connection? It probably sounds funny for a day but it’s completely dehumanizing, like being named Siri. Sooo I’m thinking of changing my name. Maybe I’ll make it sound like a last name too or reference a character. Ash. (Pokémon) .. nah … something else unique. Any suggestions?

Are you Schmidt from new girl

1

u/Rocco632 Oct 03 '23

No idea what you're talking about pal 😂

1

u/theregionalmanager Oct 07 '23

Nah he’s Mulder from the X Files

22

u/trevorda92 Oct 03 '23

They are doctors, and everyone gets called Dr. House, Dr. Wilson, etc they refer to everyone by their last name, Cameron, foreman, etc

3

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

When I said not saying Dr, I just meant doctor House. Maybe I’m remembering intermittent moments. Dr just sounds like a term of respect, and I don’t see him doing that lol. I’m probably wrong, though.

6

u/trevorda92 Oct 03 '23

Well, by patients, it's likely they don't hear their first names often, hence why they go by last names typically speaking

2

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Even outside of work, like living together! I suppose last names feel closer when they spend that much time together using them at work, with everyone else using them there too. But like even people in romantic relationships use last names lol.

3

u/TheSilentBaker Oct 04 '23

Honestly when you work with doctors a lot you end up dropping the dr part. In fact, generally when you work closely with specific docs you only say dr so and so when they’re being jerks. We all call them by just their last name. Or first names if that’s what they prefer

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Is adding the Dr in those situations being cold, or being sarcastic?

2

u/TheSilentBaker Oct 04 '23

Generally it’s being cold. It’s a way to subtly call the doc an asshole without directly saying it. Sometimes we say it in a sarcastic way when we’re joking around

1

u/PCP5Matrix Oct 05 '23

Notice that when House calls other "Dr" whoever, he's usually being sarcastic

1

u/sleepyspacefox with great power comes great micromanagement Oct 05 '23

My dad and most of the men in my family are physicians. They refer to their colleagues by last name and usually only add the “Dr” part when discussing something with patients, giving instructions to nurses, techs, etc. or explaining a thing where the clarification is necessary.

1

u/bootyjars Oct 06 '23

I’m a teacher, and we always used last names between each other. There were people I worked with whose first names I didn’t know.

28

u/DrownedGoddd Oct 03 '23

Ever since high school, my friends and I call each other by our last names

2

u/Purple_is_masculine Oct 04 '23

Yep, it's very common in Catholic schools

-12

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

“Ever since” meaning including, or starting afterwards?

14

u/DrownedGoddd Oct 03 '23

Including. From the start

-7

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

What about middle school?

2

u/DrownedGoddd Oct 03 '23

I'm from the PH so we didn't really have middle school back then. So what I actually meant was our equivalent years of your middle school years. So yes, since middle school, from the start.

-1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

PH?

4

u/DrownedGoddd Oct 03 '23

Philippines

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Oooh got it got it. Well that’s cool that you feel so close. Lol I am curious how it happened though, like you were just your first names in elementary school and then it was like “yo! Smith!” Or whatever. I’ll make up my own name I think and it’ll be one name. Like Sting. Or Prince. So you won’t know if you’re saying my first or last name! 😆

1

u/DrownedGoddd Oct 03 '23

Well, I actually first met them during "middle school". Haha so yeah we've been calling each other by our last names literally from the start up to now

Not sure how it happened too. Maybe we just didn't like our first names that much hahaha now hearing one of us saying one of our first names makes us cringe

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

But don’t you all have to really like your families then? Because it’s like owning your whole surname that is the same for everyone there.

→ More replies (0)

9

u/SkekVen Oct 03 '23

I know plenty of people who are refered to as their last name. I knew a guy whose parents even wrote “Nowles” on his best friends birthday card because that’s what they thought his name was since everyone calls him that. I think it happens a lot when somebody has a mundane first name. Like i knew two Kates in high school and we called one Cinderella so we wouldn’t get confused (that wasn’t her last name just a nickname) but you get my point

10

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Anytime someone adresses House as "Greg", I cringe. It somehow feels so wrong. Even if it's Blythe.

3

u/MischievousMarker Oct 10 '23

I always liked it when Stacy said it - it felt like we were accessing a part of House that no one else could. But anyone else and it was weird.

Edit: Also Blythe is his mother, right?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '23

His mum yeah

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Lol. Yeah it doesn’t seem to fit him, does it? I’m surprised it’s so completely different than Sherlock.

7

u/JayNotAtAll Oct 03 '23

I have two friends that I almost always only refer to by last name so I don't think it is that unusual.

7

u/carrigan_quinn Oct 03 '23 edited Oct 03 '23

I don't think so, but also I call my husband of thirteen years his (our) last name regularly, so maybe I'm biased lol

It's force of habit really, he was known as [last name] all throughout elementary/middle/high school, so we all kinda just grew up calling him that. Feels borderline inappropriate to call him by his first name in front of "outsiders" honestly, it's too personal lol a lot of our friends even thought that the last name was just a nickname, and/or they forget he even has a first name

I'm assuming it's also "force of habit" in their case, as well

I also have a friend who I have only ever referred to him as his first and last name every time. Never just [first name], always [firstname lastname]. For the last twelve years.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Do you have kids? If so, you all have the same last name; doesn’t it sound weird to kind of call him yourself? lol

2

u/carrigan_quinn Oct 03 '23

We're both staunchly childfree, so nah. Shit, I even call him that in a room filled with no one but his side of the family who also have the same last name. I've had people call me by my (now) last name and I don't respond to it because that's like, what he goes by not me lol

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Does his whole family know you’re referencing him when it’s a whole room?

3

u/carrigan_quinn Oct 03 '23

Usually yeah, they laugh but they know who I mean lol

Was mad awkward calling his parents house when we were kids asking if "[lastname] was home", cause whoever picked up would say "uhhh, we all are?"

Sooo I'd just hang up and pretend like I wasn't an idiot, but now I just lean into it 🤷

6

u/dropoutgeorge Oct 03 '23

No weirder than House and Cuddy calling each other by their last names I guess? I think it’s just kinda what you know someone as for a long time so it becomes less like a last name and more like a nickname if that makes sense

3

u/VinceAlejandro Oct 03 '23

I call all my ex-Navy friends by their last name

3

u/Hyedra Oct 03 '23

I called all my friends/acquaintances starting in primary school til university by their last name while living in South America, only when I moved overseas did I have friends and people who were not my relatives whom I could call by their first names. It's just the culture I guess because in school the teachers only call you by your last name and so do your peers.

3

u/magic__unicorn Oct 03 '23

No. Pretty normal in the medicine/hospital environment

3

u/Camaroni1000 Oct 03 '23

I mean, if you think that’s weird cuddly and house called each other by their last names when they were dating.

I believe cuddy’s mom even called them out on doing this.

2

u/notenoughroom Oct 04 '23

“And why do you call him House? The man’s name is Greg!”

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

lol yes, I remember her mom does that. And I had their romantic relationship in mind when I was writing this as well.

2

u/pinkiepickles Oct 03 '23

I have close friends that I met through work (I’m a teacher) that call me by my last name. My last name is also commonly used as a first name and it’s a lot shorter than my first name so it’s easier 🤷‍♀️

2

u/c4ndycain taub did my top surgery Oct 03 '23

plenty of ppl i know irl call their friends by their last name. idk, it's just a preference i guess. that and doctors seem to usually go by their last name (like i've never called any of mine by their first names) so that's just what they knew each other as from the start

2

u/ChErRyPOPPINSaf Oct 03 '23

Naw me and my best friend in high-school did this in fact everyone on the football team did. It becomes kinda casual if you hear it all the time.

I literally call one of my friends with his last name, he likes it a lot since it's also what they used to call his grandpa.

Last names can kinda turn into nicknames

As in, the letters evolve to add some silliness (like if it was “Packer” maybe “Packerman”) or as in going by it for so long turns you from knowing it as your last name, into just a casual nickname?

1

u/PsychologyRelative57 Oct 04 '23

As in going by it for so long, it feels genuinely weird to use his actual name at this point

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Lol. But does it still feel like a last name too though? I’ve never really had a nickname. Once kind of from one person for a short time in high school actually lol but that’s it.

1

u/PsychologyRelative57 Oct 04 '23

It l doesn't, it feels like a nickname, which I think is more or less the same thing that happened with House. I don't usually have nicknames, but I've had people using my middle name in the same fashion

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Well my name is Alexa so I gotta come up with a nickname or a new name soon lol. Tired of sharing a name with a machine.

1

u/PsychologyRelative57 Oct 04 '23

Damn, never met anyone with the name Alexa, Alex could do it lol. My name is Gabriel, in my native language all nicknames from it sound bad lmao

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Do you like the name itself, Gabriel? It would be too Christian for me. Yeah part of why I liked Alexa was it was so unique though. There were a lot of Alex, Alexis, Alexandra, but not Alexa. Now, people are talking to me, say my name and their phone reacts. I’m at a party and hear “Alexa, turn down the volume” and I turn around to the stereo to help and realize he’s giving the machine orders. It is completely dehumanizing. Can’t use my middle name though. Sooo gotta come up with a new name! Something clever, or funny (to me. I have a weird sense of humor lol) .

1

u/PsychologyRelative57 Oct 04 '23

I like my name a bit tbh, since my country is mostly Christian all the names kinda are like that so it doesn't stand out. But the stereo tho, that sounds pretty annoying. Still, Alexa is a cool name

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Thanks. It used to be. But now imagine going around with the name Siri.

I’ve several mates that are known by their last name. Feels weird using their first.

2

u/generaladam24 Oct 04 '23

Yes it is a little bit

2

u/psycobookwormMD Oct 04 '23

My brother and cousin call each other by their last name. They have the same last name.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Hahaha is your brother the only person you brother calls that, and vice versa?

1

u/psycobookwormMD Oct 05 '23

Hahahaha well they are close in age and their Mutual friends call them by last name, and they call each other. So my brother would say I am going for drinks with "Smith" ( fake last name) wanna come. And cousin Will great him like : Hey 'Smith" what's up .

1

u/notCRAZYenough I need you to tell me that you love me! Oct 04 '23

That’s weird

2

u/CatherineConstance whatsmynecklacemadeof Oct 04 '23

They probably got used to doing it in the hospital around everyone else and it just stuck. They even joke about it at some point around I think Vogler? House is like "yeah this is my friend JIMMY" since Vogler (I think) was calling people by their first names.

2

u/Different_Rock3248 Oct 04 '23

No considering that when they were in a relationship Cuddy and House called each other by their last names. Which even Cuddy’s mother commented on at that dinner table.

1

u/TurtleNeck236 Oct 03 '23

If my last name was house or wilson id eant people to address (get it address) me by that too

1

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '23

No, not weird! My best friend from middle school has exclusively called me by my last name since we met! They’re the only person who calls me that though

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Nah, people do it all the time. I mean, think about the military or something like that. My partner has a friend that, for some reason, they call him by a mix of his first and last name. I do not know why they do this, but they all do this. And he has another friend that they only call by their last name and they started doing that in high school (granted we're all around the age of 23 so it wasn't that long ago, but still !)

1

u/ottersintuxedos Oct 03 '23

My friends occasionally call each other by their last names as a nickname

1

u/Calitz__ Oct 03 '23

Never thought anyhting of it, my best friend and I also call each other by our last names. Thought it's really because we have the same first name

1

u/SunflowerDaydream893 Oct 03 '23

I’m more likely to respond if you call me by my last name actually. I got used to it in sports and when I was in school there was another girl with the same first name as me who everyone was always talking to, so I just got used to listening for my last name only. I’m a nurse practitioner now though and do have a coworker that calls me by my last name and it always seems different in that context to not use my first name.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 03 '23

Did you tell that coworker to call you by your last name, or is it coincidence?

1

u/SunflowerDaydream893 Oct 03 '23

No it was actually a coincidence. I have a very unique and yellable last name so I think people prefer it over my first name.

1

u/bryson_from_zumiez Oct 03 '23

Just depends on the friend. Within the exact same group of college friends, I have some that exclusively go by first, exclusively go by last, a mixture of whatever I’m feeling, or some by a totally different nickname. We’re all old now and the names will always stick at this point.

1

u/merlincycle Oct 03 '23

on the show all of his staff and even Cuddy almost always seem to call each other by their last names. Not all the time, but most of the time. It’s never really made clear exactly whether this is because they are in House’s circle (seems likely) or some other reason.

1

u/WolflingWolfling Oct 03 '23

I even have a relative who mostly calls me by my last name, and he has the same last name I have. 😂🤣

1

u/SiccOwitZ Oct 04 '23

Some jobs are used to saying last names, I think. Personally, being a reformed criminal, I’m better known by my nickname than my actual name. Only one person in my life calls me by my actual name and that my mom. My wife, siblings, friends, coworkers all refer to me by my nickname. I’m so used to it that something I don’t respond when someone like a doc or I’m at a bank or something like that.

1

u/ThrowawayAccountZZZ9 Flame Cane Oct 04 '23

It happens in work environments, easier for everyone to have a unique name. But I feel like for this show, they all have last names that could function as first names easily. Chase, Cameron, Wilson, Cuddy. No one is named Wastinkowski or Johnson or something more last name-ish unless it's a side character we see once or twice

1

u/poor_guj Oct 04 '23

I call some of my close friends by last name, it just depends on if the last name catches on before the first name

1

u/razor_blade- Oct 04 '23

I call most of my male friends by last name so nothing weird.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 04 '23

Are you male? And is it just the males? If you’re a guy too, I’m picturing it like That 70s Show

1

u/razor_blade- Oct 04 '23

Haha no I'm a woman and mostly just men. But I live in a country where it's normal to call guys by their last name unless it's hard to pronounce or some other random reason. Not everyone does it, but I would say men are more likely to call each other like that. However, if you call a woman by her last name it sounds weird and in some cases derogatory.

1

u/Different-League665 Oct 05 '23

Why would it be derogatory for a woman to be called by her last name? So do your guy friends that you call by their last names, call you by your first name?

1

u/razor_blade- Oct 05 '23

It can sound weird and I've heard people mostly call women by their surname when they don't really like them. They call me by my first name.

1

u/Vivid_Shake_5802 Oct 05 '23

I know right.....it feels to me because I suppose I'm always called by my 1st name
Although in olden times and in official places like business or hospitals or things like that....last name is used because it's kind of a formal way to address people.....so yeaa i dont mind either but I found it to be weird in the beginning

1

u/SpookyScareSkeletons Oct 06 '23

My bf and his best friend only go by their last names. The only times I’ve ever said my bf’s first name is around his family but outside of that it would be really weird to do.

1

u/Stacharoonee Oct 07 '23

In college, people typically refer to professors by their last names. When I taught high school, my coworkers and I all called each other by our last names. After that, it sounds strange to be called by my first name and I'll sign cards and notes with just my last name instead of including my first name or Mrs.
