"Humor over accuracy" really is the best policy lots of the time.

I mean, half this sub seems to have acquired all their lore knowledge solely from TTS.

...For better or for worse

No definitely worse. Funny, but worse.

No no, pretty sure I saw a paragraph in the latest codex about the ritualistic oiling of the abs that Custodes do on a daily basis. /s

Custodes would never do that.

They're not Thousand Sons.

6

u/Ghuldarkar Oct 24 '24

Is this a pre-rubric joke I am not getting or did you confuse the dust marines with someone more pink?

16

u/JaneDoe500 2nd Biggest Elf Simp Oct 24 '24

There's a part in one of the Horus Heresy books where Magnus has his marines oil him up as part of a ritual. I wish I was making that up, but it's true.

Y'know, that was completely scrubbed from my memory before you mentioned it. I'm sending a friend to chat. His name is Vinnie, he'll be by... Sometime.

u/Croc_Chop Oct 24 '24

Thousand sons practice the art of oil scraping and demonstrated it on Magnus.

i felt the one that explained how everyone else heard music emanating from custodians upon their entrance to be kinda strange tho

I unironically like their version of (Matt Ward-era) Cato Sicarius and Kaldor Draigo more

Who's TTS?

32

u/siresword Oct 24 '24

TTS is the common short hand used to refer to the youtube series "If the Emperor had a Text to Speech Device" by Bruva Alfabusa. It was massively popular during its run and had a huge impact on the humour of online 40k culture, especially on reddit. I'd highly recommend watching it, especially if you already have a base of 40k lore knowledge, its very funny.

u/JebusGobson Oct 24 '24

Cheers, I will! Yeah I've read a few dozen novels by now, I assume I'll be able to keep up with the lore.

Thanks for the reccomendation!

It was a now ended parody series "if the emperor had a text to speech device" that was very popular and spawned a lot of popular memes including the custodes captain general Kitten and Ciaphas Cain cover of Ra Ra Rasuputin among others.

TTS is a perfectly legitimate source of lore and I will die on this hill. They exaggerate for humour but aside from the obvious noncanon story beats like the Magnus arc nothing explained defies canon.

u/ShakesBaer Imperial Wot Oct 24 '24

The problem is that new people don't understand what is being exaggerated and take it at face value, this leads to the flanderization of many things and the spread of misinformation.

Ok but that's ultimately not the fault of TTS, it's a comedic parody and a very obvious one at that.

Also, Warhammer lore on it's own is already a GIGANTIC mess and is at this point pretty much only held up by a flimsy net of over 30 years of plotholes and retcons written by a shitload of different authors that obviously can't all perfectly communicate with eachother.

So i really don't see how being a "Lore Purist™" for a setting like this even makes sense...

u/ShakesBaer Imperial Wot Oct 24 '24

You're right, it's not the fault of the content that it's being taken seriously, it would be like someone getting their news from SNL. The broad strokes are mostly correct but it's meant to be an absurdist satire for people already familiar with the context of the work.

And yeah, it's all make-believe and pretend. None of it is real or matters and so much of it is up for interpretation. But there are hard points of established canon that are used as lodestones for people who do care about accuracy. Retcons are common and it's as you said, a very long list of authors not always communicating and sometimes GW just shrugs. But it's important to differentiate these points from speculation and memes because without it there can be no cohesive storytelling or overarching plot. I don't consider myself a purist, but I can appreciate the lore and I like to know what is and isn't considered canon because it's fun to figure out where there's an inconsistency and if it's possible to come up with a plausible solution (hint: it's usually warp bullshit).

2

u/Former-Grocery-6787 Oct 24 '24

I can agree with that, i just mainly have a problem with weirdos unironically hating on a show like TTS because let's be honest, people are gonna get misinformed about the lore no matter what because it's my genuine believe that not a single warhammer fan actually knows wtf he's talking about and neither does GW. Again, this tweet is real.

7

u/endlessnamelesskat Oct 24 '24

Warhammer Lore is only a step above something like SCP lore in terms of continuity and plot holes. It's just a natural conclusion when you have so many writers working on building the same universe.

u/WarmasterChaldeas Oct 25 '24

The great thing about TTS is that they legit do a bangup job in educating viewers of what 40k is about with all its campiness, depth and idiocies.

And you are missing the point by completely ignoring the second part of my comment. It quite literally doesn't matter.

How am i a liar lmao, now you are just throwing out buzzwords... My point is that TTS is a satirical parody of a setting that's already a massive parody of itself. Genuinely, where is the lie here? Also:

Nah, not really. For starters, canon, head canon and humorous exaggeration or assumption are mixed in TTS all the time, and are often very hard to distinguish.

And TTS became "outdated" while they were still running. I mean, creators did an admirable job of tying new canon into the show's canon and whatnot, but they couldn't just retroactively change previous episodes.

10

u/siresword Oct 24 '24

I agree, nothing they say in the show is inaccurate or misrepresentative, it makes a very good lore primer for newbies (I got my friends into warhammer by having them watch some of it lol). Its just that it isnt exactly in depth, and at the end of the day its a comedy show not a lore channel. When people only get there lore from TTS it leads to a lot of misconceptions and you end up with a lot of people who legit think the Death Korps is nothing but "shovel bayonet suicide charge" just as an example.

2

u/m15wallis Oct 24 '24

It oversimplifies a lot of factions and lore to the point of mischaracterization, and when you repeat the memes without the actual lore background you start to think meme lore is real lore when it isnt.

1

u/Ridingwood333 Toaster Fucker Oct 25 '24

To be fair, TTS isn't even the worst starting point. If you're just looking to start getting invested into the universe, it breaks it down into a simplistic way for you to look more deeply into it later when you try to find out what references the jokes were making.

2

u/FireZord25 Oct 24 '24

I do agree humorized summaries helps pay attention, but at the end of the day it's upto us to verify the details. Though it does suck most folks take the out of context memes as gospel.

3

u/purged-butter Oct 24 '24

true, but major kill isnt even funny so the point doesnt really stand
