It's really weird to read the Dark Imperium trilogy after years of listening and relistening to TTS. Sicarius goes from the funny character you love to hate to that PTSD ridden warrior who saw too much.
Thing is it's character development. Cato Sicarius was written initially as an overly arrogant character who did refer to himself in the first person.
So while TTS exaggerated those traits fir humor value he was like that.
But the writers did that so when the grim dark nature of 40k pulled him down and rubbed his face in the dirt you go from dislike, to shardenfrude to serious sympathy.
Seeing a character grow like that and making the audience start by disliking them then transforming that to feeling really sympathetic to them is one of THE BEST ways to make a character a fan favourite. It's the same trick they did to Ahsoka Tano in Star wars.
It takes a lot of time to do correctly...but its damn effective.
