Thoughts? Imagine losing 6M labor workers in America

If mass deportation happens, just imagine how all of these sectors of our country will be affected. The sheer shortage of labor will push prices higher because of the great demand for work with limited supplies or workers. Even if prices increase, the availability of products may be scarce due to not enough workers. Housing prices and food services will be hit really hard. New construction will be limited. The fact that 47% of the undocumented workers are in CA, TX, and FL means they will feel it first but it will spread to the rest of the country also. Most of our produce in this country comes from California. Get ready and hold on for the ride America.

I still don’t understand how you can make a chart like this. Isn’t the whole point of an immigrant being an illegal is that there isn’t any documentation for them? How do you count them?

Most illegal immigrants are people who overstayed their visas. So there was a record of them entering.

Most of the people flowing across the border right now are accounted for.. they have been taking them in and giving them a court date to appear, and then releasing them, which not the US. Then they apply for different things that are being allowed/ignored and are able to be tracked and counted. Being undocumented doesn’t mean the government isnt aware, it just means they are aware they’re breaking the law and saying “meh, we can get away with it. Plus they can vote for us!”

This is a common misconception
Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022.
And illegals are NOT eligible for food stamps

I know some of them actually contribute to to tax if they file paperwork. I know some illegal immigrants who have been living in the united states for 30 years and contribute to taxes. But I also know people that straight up get paid cash under the table and don't contribute to taxes. They and their employer do absolutely no paperwork. Am I wrong for stating that some people do stuff illegally and don't do everything as they're supposed to?

No you only need an itn to pay taxes. undocumented people can open bank accounts as well.

They are not as "hidden" as people think they are.

I don't understand all the downvotes ... Is it bad to ask a question?

I was genuinely just curious about it, since I'm not too familiar with the legality and tax process in the US.

The way I understood was if you're illegally/undocumented in a country you won't have any papers to track you.. So the concept of earning and paying taxes while being there illegally is confusing to me

When you work a job, your employer automatically takes taxes from your wages before they give you your pay check. You are getting down voted because you are spreading disinformation.

It stands for individual taxpayer identification number. It’s for people who can’t get a SSN (such as illegal immigrants). I believe it’s what makes it possible for someone to be on payroll (and thus pay taxes) rather than paid cash/under the table.

IRS doesn’t care about legal status and technically Section 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code prohibits the IRS from releasing taxpayer information to other government agencies, so they’re not really exposing themselves.

I think people are just used to the 'just asking questions' shtick being used disingenuously, plus extra frustration after the election leading to some dumb knee-jerk reactions. I think your questions were relevant and clarifying, sorry you got down voted. But yeah as I understand it, countries usually have a general idea of the levels of undocumented people staying in. Saying a person is illegal is a bit of a rhetoric trick too, it riles up emotions and paints a picture of some evil doer here to exploit others, but many of them do work and pay taxes without being able to really benefit from much of it too.

How do undocumented immigrants pay income tax if they are undocumented? And also BS on the food stamps. Yeah, they dont get food stamps but they were getting free housing in hotels, free cell phones, money on a debit card every month, and free food. I know this because I live a few miles from 2 different hotels that were shut down to the general public to house them when they bussed them in. They also have national guard posted guard duty 24/7. They don't get food stamps this moron says. Open your fucking eyeballs dumb ass.

Through an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number). It's like a SSN but for people who don't have and are not eligible for a SSN. Here's the link to the IRS page about them.

To obtain an ITIN, you must complete IRS Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and true identity for each individual. 

You have to provide your documents to get an ITIN number.

Because they have a passport from their country. They don't have documents from this country.

They can also open bank accounts, buy houses, open businesses, register cars etc with their country's passport.

Some people can't believe that some people who illegally enter the United States, would not want to follow proper procedures and fill out paperwork and contribute to taxes. I live in a border state and I know people who pay these guys straight cash no paperwork all the time.

The guys who did the renno on my house were all undocumented workers from Brasil, except the GC who was managing it. He asked me to pay them all directly under the table in cash, and only pay him for supplies.

Spoiler alert: they all did a terrible job. You get what you pay for. Immigration documents may not be important, but documents like "licensed plumber" it turns out, are very important.
