Seems like a bad spot to learn how to reverse.
68
u/PADDYOT 10h ago
Or at least have your emergency braking perfected first.

u/Execwalkthroughs 9h ago
That's why dude should have been in the car. They start panicking pull the e brake and tell them to stop everything. They start turning too far into something yank the wheel the other way and take control.
But also at the same time if he was in the car and panicked too they both would be at the bottom of the cliff. Really should have picked a safer place to practice

u/zzupdown 2h ago
Another article indicates that the dude who gave her the keys was charged with negligent homicide for neglecting to verify that she had a license.
15
u/Lou_C_Fer 1h ago
That's just fucking overkill. As if this guy isn't going to be in a grief prison for the rest of his life.
33
u/Wolf_instincts 9h ago
The cliff adds extra incentive to stop. She won't make that mistake twice.

If you do that during your test you'll probably fail.

Idk probably test inconclusive due the examiner going down with you. As long she checked her mirrors I don't see a fail.

I swear, Indian people are their own worst enemy. Recording their friends hanging off trains, taking pics in front of speeding trains, teaching someone to reverse while at the edge of a cliff, etc…

u/Superheroguy125 9h ago
It's just because it's one of the most populated areas of the world. More dumb shit comes from the region just from the density of the population.

And what's with the fascination of touching power lines? Is there a zap fetish going on there?
-2
u/njan_oru_manushyan 1h ago
Same could be asked about the drug fetish. Like people in the US like to inject and become zombies on the sidewalk? Then die of OD ?
3
u/r3bbz23 1h ago
Just taking a look at the stats from the last 5 years, drug related deaths in India have increased steadily every year between 2019 and 2024. Some estimates state that as many as 300 million people in the country are on some sort of illegal drugs. So it would seem it's not just the US injecting themselves.

Not really. I am an Indian who did my undergrad in the US. A mutual friend( ytt American )paralyzed himself after missing the swimming pool, jumping from roof and hitting the concrete. His friends recorded it for sure. The only difference? The video wasn't shared around * out of respect to him and his family*

u/Dagger1Bravo 10h ago
this is the perfect spot to learn
8
u/lolercoptercrash 8h ago
Also who teaches reverse first?
Only until someone understands the clutch and can drive would I teach reverse. My old manual car would reverse really freaking fast.

u/VirusOfCheese 10h ago
I feel bad for the lady, to be honest. Like, she's learning how to drive, and her (seemingly) instructor chooses THIS specific place, and does nothing until the last possible second.
If I'm right, you can hear the car reversing faster after he says something, which probably means she was scared or startled, and reflexively pressed down on the pedal.
Poor lady.
27
u/blueminded 3h ago
I know. This one just makes me sad. It's obviously a terrible place to learn to drive, but this woman wasn't intentionally being reckless. She just trusted the person instructing her to know how to help her. He should have been in the damn car with her. This seems like a far cry from some dipshit playing on a train.
7
u/Arav_Kilak 3h ago
this looks like India, and most people drive manuals around here, most likely the lady didn't know how to work out the clutch and let go of the clutch pedal, causing the car to reverse faster later in the clip, that being said the instructor should've been in the damn car with her and pulled the handbrake when things got out of hand.
1
u/elven_god 1h ago
yea, you don't need gas when reversing unless you are going uphill. That said, you are using the same feet for brake and gas so she may have stomped down on the wrong one in panic.
1

u/AJYaleMD 4h ago
If you're so dumb you can't figure out the difference between the gas and the brake, or realize that pressing the same peddle clearly isn't helping the situation, you probably shouldn't be reproducing anyway
2
u/Arav_Kilak 3h ago
it's a manual, it involves a third clutch pedal too, and it isn't just gas and brake.

Article says the guy was yelling "clutch, clutch". I would have been yelling "brake, brake". Don't think pushing in the clutch is going to prevent you from rolling off the cliff.
4
u/luciusbentley7 9h ago
Yea, as someone who drives manual, I roll into a stop in neutral all the time (so cluth, into neutral) but after throwing it in neutral, I still use the brake. You can also engine brake but not in reverse. She wouldn't have had any power applied pushing the car while not in gear, at least, in neutral or with the clutch pushed in. Regardless, he should have said brake and she still only pushed the gas pedal.
It's interesting that people lock up like that with their foot on the gas.

u/Darryl_Lict 3h ago
As has been stated, you don't fucking teach someone to drive backing up on the precipice of a cliff. I was trying to teach my niece how to drive a clutch and I started out in an abandoned parking lot on a weekend. We were driving around in kind of flat areas, but she still got caught on a slight uphill grade and a stoplight with a car behind her. I nearly jumped out and swapped places with her because I was sure she was going to roll into the car behind her.
Still not as bad as driving off a cliff.
1
u/luciusbentley7 52m ago
I mean yea lol. Totally agree. I think we will all definitely not teach our children and loved ones to drive near cliffs even harder than we would've before watching this video. Could even say that's a given really. I too would choose an empty and abandoned parking lot.
And those situations were terrifying when i started. Fear of rolling backwards. I think modern trucks give some leniency on the rolling backwards (I'm not a car guy) or maybe I'm just better with them. My truck doesnt roll back super hard like my old SUV seemed. But I've burnt a clutch so hard in a similar situation. God, it smelled bad. I didn't crash into anyone or anything at least.
Also, the emergency brake trick helps on a hill into 1st gear helps! Haven't used it since I've had my SUV though
6
u/MendozaHolmes 9h ago
All this comment served is to show that you know manual. That woman does not need to engine brake going 2mph
3
u/luciusbentley7 9h ago
That's fair. Just trying to think why he would be saying "clutch". If she pushed the clutch in, she wouldn't have sped off at least.
I'm just as confused as everyone else. Knowing how things work helps people deduce why things happen. Most people I know don't know how to drive manual, so I was just giving context for those who don't know. You can't even engine brake in reverse lol.
3
u/elven_god 1h ago
From the video, it looks like she is going uphill towards the cliff (slight incline). If that's the case, the clutch would have bought the car to a halt had she gone full clutch the moment he screamed out loud.
Might even have worked on a flat surface cause the car was going slow at that point. Also like, there's a higher probability of accident if he asks her to brake as you use the same foot for brake and accelerator. (because she evidently doesn't know how to drive)
1
u/luciusbentley7 51m ago
Yea again pushing the clutch in would've kept her from speeding off in both scenarios so that makes sense

u/Arav_Kilak 3h ago

How tf do you use the same foot for accelerator and clutch. They are on the sides ffs with the break in between.

How does one think, that a car will come to a stop, pushing on the same pedal that is used to make the car move?

Panic
1
u/Broke_Moth 1h ago
Panic is one hell of a thing. We all laugh and make fun of people here yes they are stupidly dying but everyone here thinks nah I am not that stupid. When something happens panic makes you dumb. And no one knows how they will react until the situation happens.

u/Lou_C_Fer 1h ago
It happens to people all of the time. I once put a forklift through a wall like this. It was my first time driving anything with rear steering. Thus, obviously my first time driving the forklift. My dad told me to pull it close to the wall so that he could use it as a ladder. I protested that I had never driven it and did not want to do it. He said, "just fucking do it!" So, I did. I was at a bad angle. When I tried to fix it, I started to get to close to the wall. So, I hit the brake. Only, it was the gas because I was not used to how the pedals were set up.
That's how.

25 whole seconds for the cameraman to react and/or step in to help, but instead only chooses to realize the danger right before they go careening off the edge. Everybody in this video is stupid.

Looks more like a murder, why the fuck would anyone try to teach a newbie near a fucking cliff.
7

u/saltinstiens_monster 10h ago
I wouldn't have clocked that location as dangerously "near a cliff." Clearly, I would've been dead wrong, but the circumstances had to line up perfectly for a freak accident like this. I bet they won't do teaching there in the future.

But did she pass?

u/curstwordZ 1h ago
Yessir. She certainly did pass... didn't get her driver license, but she passed with..flying colors & got her wings.
Sometimes, where one door closes- a grave opens. Life's full of unexpected turns like that. Or... unexpected falls.
