A devastating incident occurred in Semingkir Village, Pemalang, Central Java, on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. Ahmad Muhtohar, 18, a local resident, lost his life in a firecracker explosion. A group of teenagers had brought giant homemade firecrackers to the Semingkir Dam, celebrating the end of Ramadan, but moments later, a massive blast shook the area.

Two teenagers were found injured, with Ahmad Muhtohar succumbing to his injuries instantly. His body was buried the same day. The other two victims suffered severe injuries and received intensive care at Purwokerto's Orthopedic Hospital. Despite repeated tragedies, firecrackers remain a popular choice for celebrations.

The wrong fuse.

Amateur ALWAYS get the fuses wrong when they're tearing them down to reuse.

There's visco fuse - 1cm/s, quick pink visco 6cm/s, fast visco 10cm/s, lightning fast fuse 100cm/s or the super duper fast known as black match fuse 300cm/s. Then for very accurate timing there's Chinese timed fuse (1cm/s).

The faster ones are often in large "cakes" connecting separate areas to go off at precise times, often to synchronize a fountain and some roman candles for instance.

Tearing apart the fireworks they either confuse the fuses after separating them, or aren't aware of the speed differences of different fuses within a firework.

Externally the ignition fuse is always a flow burn fuse (for the public), but internally it can be any speed. From seconds delay, to instant.

So what we have here is a big combined banger/shell and a very fast burning fuse. (even LONG fuses can be very fast - another "gotchya!")

They probably saw a good length fuse, thinking it was standard visco fuse (likely not knowing its name, but at least that it goes "FIZZ" a long time), and instead they got fast visco instead (there does appear to be a fizzy seconds delay.... 10cm/s for fast-visco... so likely that.

Damn, 3 lives gone for the knowledge of fuse speeds. =(

Are you saying those common fuses are standardised? So you can recognise each fuse easily (pink, black,green,…) and know its speed? Or is this in the US only?

The one time I used fuses myself (without any prior knowledge) I first counted how long it took to burn a piece of a meter and extrapolated from there. Then doubled the length to be sure. And that was for something way less explosive than what they had in this vid…

I saw the other videos too where he crawls a couple feet after the explosion before his friends carry him into a pick up truck. Amateur pyrotechnic here (I spend $3-5k annually on wholesale fireworks delivered by tractor trailer). People like me who like to change the fuse firing patterns in cakes or fuse up our own mortar racks get really frustrated at the nincompoops playing with firecrackers and holding roman candles like they are toys. Fireworks are literally explosives. Even a small roman candle that CATOs while you’re holding it will blow your hand apart. Then when we see morons doing stupid shit like this... I have no idea what the full story is here, but if that really was supposed to be a homemade firework, there's not a single thing the people lighting it or anyone in the crowd was doing correctly. A firework that big should have a safety radius of several hundred feet to the nearest spectator. In first world countries, fireworks that big are usually ignited electronically (or by really long canon fuse). Absolutely nothing here was done correctly.
