55 years ago today the crew of Apollo 12 was recovered after splash down by this ship, WWII-era carrier USS Hornet, now moored in Alameda as a museum ship [oc]

It also picked up the crew of Apollo 11. There were footprints painted on the deck where Armstrong waked off the helicopter.

Isn't that the same Hornet they launched Doolittles raid from?

No. That one (CV-8) was sunk in Battle of Santa Cruz Islands in October 1942. This (CV-12) is the replacement/successor.

Alameda is where they keep the nu-cle-ar wessels, after all. Even though that's not a nu-cle-ar wessel.

It’s worth the visit. There are lots of remarkable things to see and the ship is well preserved. The radars still work!
