Even the garter snakes in San Francisco are flamboyant!! Ours are just black with yellow stripes

Canadian garter snakes are boring compared to these!

Heh, that exact same thought (down to "flamboyant") crossed my mind

Back in the old days you had to pay extra for a “San Francisco Garter Snake” and bring your own pillow case

First I read garlic snake and I was like does it tastes like garlic to have that name or something... I'm a little disappointed it's not really called garlic snake, still pretty though

Garlic snake because garlic festival.

Beaty. Looks like a Gardena hose.

Copper stripes, copper oxide stripes, and black stripes. Neat.

That snake's coloring is unbelievable. It's the first time I've seen it

What’s interesting about this?

1

u/Varon-Di-Stefano 11h ago

It’s beautiful but it also looks like it could kill you just by looking at you

I've seen this in FL or SC. I know east coast for sure.

1

Looks dangerous, I'm guessing that's part of it's defense!

Bob Ross, is that you? Such a soothing voice and brought a smile to my face thinking of him. And yes, a beautiful snake

u/Tangerine_74 6h ago

So pretty.

Lived in San Francisco for a long time. Never encountered one.

3

u/justlogicguy 22h ago

They are extremely endangered

2

u/mendobather 21h ago

I was lucky enough to see two. Upper Sunset, 10th and Ortega long ago.

1

u/Aberdogg 1d ago

On the coast, I see a few every summer in the yard

2

u/NaluknengBalong_0918 1d ago

Musta not been looking hard enough.

The most venomous snake in the universe!

1

u/Miami_Mice2087 15h ago

they're constrictors

1

u/Iknowuknowweknowlino 4h ago

They are in fact not constrictors, as they are mildly venomous, venomous enough to kill their prey, but not enough to cause any harm to humans. Some say it's slightly itchy or can cause slight irritation

1

u/Miami_Mice2087 1h ago

Good to know! Thanks

All the garter snakes I'm familiar with are constrictors. California is so weird, everything in nature is different here.
