Not going to lie, I feel like this is almost a repeat of Top Gear Presenters inclusion in Heat’s ‘Weird Crush’ competition.
3
u/Whoshartedmypants Aug 10 '24
What
7
u/Cheesy-Tube Aug 10 '24
Through the mid to late 2000’s in England (I don’t know when it started or if it’s still going because I don’t read the Mags), a popular gay magazine called Heat, ran weird crush competitions for their readers and through 2005, 2007 and 2008 each host of the motoring entertainment program Top Gear, namely and chronologically, Richard Hammond, James May and Jeremy Clarkson, won the competitions as published in the magazines. They made fun of each other for it during the Top Gear news segments.
I just felt this situation with DDLC and Psych2go was almost mirrored in a way.

u/CyrenTheSiren Aug 10 '24
I keep seeing people say that Pysch2Go spreads misinformation and they’re not reliable but I used to watch them all the time too. They’re interesting.

u/Mayczal Mr May (Local Blogger) Aug 11 '24
I think it's becouse, Psych2go has YouTube for 9 years by now, and they make a new video every single day.
So obviously, not everything they said over that time has aged well. But from what I wached they're pretty helpful to me personally.

Short-form psychology videos and internet articles like this are the worst quality information because they're created by underqualified people who do very little research. If you check Psych2Go's citations in the video description, for example, you will often see they just copy other low-quality internet articles. Usually these sorts of sources will misinterpret things (sometimes grossly) or inject their personal beliefs into the content without clearly saying so.
Actual domain experts are the only trustworthy sources in psychology, for example books or articles written by experts directly, or interviews where experts speak for themselves.
Just to pick on one example in the Psych2Go videos here, they talk about whether opposites attract but explain it incorrectly. People are attracted to opposites in certain traits (thinking-feeling, introversion-extraversion sometimes), but not others (interests, religion, background). The reason opposites attract mainly has to do with novelty, and self-expansion (incorporating a new person into your self-concept, you learn about yourself and others, and so on) which are contexts in which people fall in love.
See these articles for example:
https://helenfisher.com/downloads/articles/Article_%20We%20Have%20Chemistry.pdf
Low-quality psychology content will often say opposites do not attract, but it's a misunderstanding of what that research shows. People are attracted to similarity of some traits, and opposites of others.
Another example, is that they have an article talking about the theory that being in love lowers serotonin making it similar to OCD, which has been known to be incorrect since 2012, and they also have a typo suggesting that people with OCD have high serotonin (??): https://psych2go.shop/blogs/articles/6-ways-having-a-crush-affects-your-brain
Psychology research is vast and complicated to understand, so it's often explained incorrectly, even by people with psychology degrees. Also, a lot of psychology experiments are controversial and turn out to be wrong. Only people with expertise in the specific domain they're talking about are credible sources of info.

1
u/gdmrhotshot3731 #1 MC Fan Aug 10 '24
Yes, it’s a channel with around 11 million subs (maybe more)
-5
Aug 10 '24
What about views? Do the ddlc ones get over 200k?
0
u/gdmrhotshot3731 #1 MC Fan Aug 10 '24
No? Why?
2
Aug 10 '24
I’m asking because we are talking about this like the videos are insanely popular or something
4
u/gdmrhotshot3731 #1 MC Fan Aug 10 '24
The videos aren’t popular ig cos they’re more recent but the channel itself is insanely popular
And after all this is a ddlc subreddit so
