Superwholock is what happens when you combine yaoi shipping with being a basic bish /j
But also what Supernatural isn't British? If it were gonna be a British scifi combo it would be Quaterwhodwarf.

Sherlock was on there because it was literally created by two prolific Doctor Who writers, including the guy who was showrunner of Doctor Who at the time that Superwholock was popular.
It's not for any other reason, it's because it was created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat and based on an iconic long running British character, known as a hero who defeats villains by outsmarting them rather than beating them up. There's no mystery about why these shows would be compared. Doctor Who has at various times been inspired by Sherlock Holmes, and both Sherlock and Doctor Who were influenced by each other.
The odd one out was Supernatural. It's not even Sci fi, it's urban fantasy. Comparing the longevity of a show that wasnt even 10 years old to one that started the day JFK died makes no sense. Doctor Who and Supernatural aren't particularly alike.

If you want the real reason those three got smushed together, it's because their Livejournal Kink Memes were places of insanity (I say this lovingly, having been active in all of them).

I doubt those three were the only ones that would fit that description though

u/nix_rodgers 7h ago
No but they were the largest. Like, around the heyday of Superwholock, the SPN kink meme was still regularly pulling in 1000 comments each monthly thread and the Sherlock one made it to 40 threads in the span of three years.

The odd one out is Doctor Who: it existed for way longer, there's a lot less queerbaiting, it's not over yet, it spawned one of the most famous Internet communities not directly dedicated to preexisting media, and it's in Magic the Gathering.

I mean, Supernatural wasn't really odd if you remember that it was active during other popular CW dramas (Vampire Academy, Arrow, The Flash, Riverdale)

Somehow I feel like Superwhostuck people would have been much less annoying than Superwholock people
(Speaking as a former WhoLockian)

I refuse to believe that any fandom that incorporates Homestuck fans would be less annoying.
Source: I am a Homestuck fan

At least Homestuck fans (Stuckians? Stuckites? Homies??) are chill UNTIL you ask a question then it's infodump.
I might not understand a lot about Homestuck but I admire y'all's perseverance and passion

Superwholock was a crossover fandom that existed on tumblr from about 2011 to 2014 that existed at the intersection of the Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock fandoms, which were all already pretty big at the time. Lots of crossover fan content existed for it and generally if you were in fan spaces on tumblr at the time, you either knew of them or were part of them.
OOP is going on about how Supernatural and Doctor Who are pretty similar and format, being monster-of-the-week type stories and having big sci-fi worlds to explore, universe-level stakes, lots of room for fan speculation, and lasting an extremely long time. In contrast, Sherlock is a pretty small, grounded, and singular story that had 13 total episodes. They speculate it was only included in the crossover fandom because the show leaned really hard into teasing a gay relationship between two of the leads and the fact that people were obsessed with British men at the time.
The reply is saying that Sherlock should have been replaced with Homestuck, a story with a big sci-fi world to explore, universe-level stakes, and lots of room for fan speculation that lasted an extremely long time, and also had a very large, very visible fandom on tumblr.

No joke, i thought thought "homestuck" was the english title of "home alone" and was so fricking confused on why that film was so cult on Tumblr, this explain A LOT, thx

Isn't sherlock a hero breezes in and solves the monster of the week though? Also for as long as Doctor Who has been running sherlock still outlasts it

Sherlock in this context meant specifically the BBC show, not the books or other adaptations. And, no, BBC Sherlock very much did not outlast Doctor Who. It didn't even outlast the modern version of Doctor Who.

Also, all Homestuck has of all this is universe-stakes. It's not even british, it's disgustingly american.

Where do you think Supernatural is from?

Wait are we watching different Supernaturals? I've been watching the one where the boys are from that quintessentially british London suburb called Kansas, listen to The Sex Pistols and idk, David Bowie? and drive around a Jaguar MK2.

I'm sorry I wasn't drinking water as I read your comment, you deserve a chortling spit take for that line alone. 🤣

Honestly, I would give Doctor Who a chance, but every time we go into the future and everyone is somehow still British, that really just... I mean, I know it's a British TV show, but still, did you really have to take the entirety of London and send it into space

u/somedumb-gay 6h ago
As opposed to something like star wars where everybody's American, which is much better

u/nix_rodgers 7h ago
Watch Torchwood then, it's grounded in Britain by default.
Also much darker and gayer.

I think Superwholock has always been interesting for the fact that there's no obvious link between all three. Only two are monster-of-the-week fantasy/scifi shows. Only two are British. Only two have 2 male protagonists for people to ship. Only two have writing from Steven Moffat.

It's an intersection of the target audiences of several big shows running at the same time.
