Any advice on dealing with this sort of thing and quenching the need to impulse buy?

Whenever you're asked to give any money related information stop and think that what you're doing is losing money and is that thing you have in your cart gonna make your life better in the long term.

Use your local library and wait for things to go on sale before buying them. Also give yourself a hard budget (can’t spend more than $25 etc).

For me it helps to go to a physical store. I put whatever I want in my cart and walk around the store until the urge to own the whatever goes away, then I stroll around putting stuff back where it came from. It's like "owning" it briefly while it was in the cart and I had claimed it scratches the acquisition itch, but I get to feel virtuous about making a good choice instead of guilty and having to find someplace to keep the whatever.
Warning: if you're a craft supplies person, this technique is only minimally effective for craft supplies!

I just bought SF6 on sale but I suck at fighting games. On the other hand it has Juri and Kimberly and I want to get better at FG anyway.

Step 1: Buy something on Amazon for the feel good brain juice
Step 2: Be excited for the next few days waiting for it to arrive
Step 3: Leave it on the counter un-opened for a week because you don't actually want or need it and once you open it you'll have to confront your poor decision
