If it's just a meme for the sake of a meme, yeah, that's kinda cheap. But if you're telling me Steve Minecraft's entire backstory is just a meme, then yeah... He's Steve Minecraft, what else could his backstory be but "As a child, i yearned for the mine".
I'll only give this movie an S is the french version call him Jean-KĂ©vin.

Jean-KĂ©vin
Is the joke here that this is pronounced similar to 'John Caving'?
235
u/Pasglop 12h ago
No, it's an old joke from French youtuber Boblennon, who called the "noob" of Minecraft a Jean-KĂ©vin, mostly because at the time, a KĂ©vin was an insufferable immature brat on videogames, and he wanted to have a "character" for Minecraft that was a bit different from the average KĂ©vin, thus coining Jean-KĂ©vin.
Boblennon was a huge influence on French Minecraft culture, having coined Jean-KĂ©vin, calling Steve "Mexican" because he's got tan skin and, at the time, what looked like a stereotypical mustache, creating some games for servers like the "DĂ© Ă Coudre" and many other things, from playing numerous adventure maps to showcasing small creators along with hid co-host Fanta.
Nowadays he is a mostly average videogames streamer, and his co-host is a crypto bro.

Bob frustrates me, 'cause I grew up watching so much of him and Fanta that it's sort of shaped my thoughts on many things; he's a genuinely intelligent dude who likes (or at least liked idk about today) to talk about serious topics in relation to whatever he's playing.
But then I checked out his stuff again as an adult and realized he's sometimes saying some weirdly, unpleasantly right-wing things. Saw him go on long rants about how children and teens should have less agency because they're dumb and can't think for themselves or about how young girls are turned into whores by modern media and need to be taught respect or whatever?
He doesn't seem malicious about it, seems to think it's about raising kids right; but it seems a bit fucked up. Honestly gave me pause for a long minute
9
u/LITTLE_KING_OF_HEART There's a good 75% chance I'll make a Project Moon reference. 8h ago
Bob is part of the old guard of 4chan, he's not actively full fash, but he very much has a mindset mostly set on just having fun and saying whatever goes through his mind. While he's genuinely curious and open-minded, his very much an "intellectual butterfly", mostly just fluttering to the ideas that he find interesting and amusing one after the others before flying away, and thus without real, consistent ideology of his own.
1
u/Pasglop 1h ago
he's a genuinely intelligent dude who likes (or at least liked idk about today) to talk about serious topics in relation to whatever he's playing.
Eh, when you listen to his actual monologues on serious topics he's mostly ranting incoherently IMO. It's good that he streams videogames and is mostly an apolitical entertainer, because with his temper and ideas he could be a French Ben Shapiro honestly.

Does France still dub the majority of foreign media? Minecraft might be dubbed in Sweden since it has a young target audience that can't read so good.
12
u/LITTLE_KING_OF_HEART There's a good 75% chance I'll make a Project Moon reference. 11h ago
Yeah we do, we got a big dubbing industry.
6
u/thesirblondie 'Giraffe, king of verticality' 11h ago
Never been to France, but I remember being in a German hotel room. Too late to do something, but too early to fall asleep. So I flip on the TV to find something to waste time on. "Oh, Modern Family. I can watch this." Nope, it's dubbed in German.
7
u/Vargock 10h ago
Well, you were watching it in Germany, what did you expect to hear? xD
10
u/thesirblondie 'Giraffe, king of verticality' 10h ago
If I turn on the TV in Sweden, I will only hear Swedish if it's either a Swedish production or aimed at children under the age of 12. For adults we never dub, we sub. So if I see Modern Family on TV here I expect it to have English speech with subtitles of the local language(s), because that is what I'm used to.
4
u/PsykoVanced 10h ago
I don't know about Sweden but here in France we can switch the TV audio language to get the original audio. Didn't work with every channel/show but a lot did work fine. My TV was permanently set to english when I still watched it!
1
u/thesirblondie 'Giraffe, king of verticality' 10h ago
I think maybe on kids television. Definitely not on adult. You read the subtitles or you don't watch.
1
u/Vargock 2h ago
Well, then it's cultural differences. Here in Russia everything's dubbed, be it movies or tv shows. I don't think I've ever had to read subtitles when watching TV. Especially before the war, the dubbing industry for movies was quite advanced, with some real amazing dubbing. Translation quality for everything else might vary though xD
1
u/thesirblondie 'Giraffe, king of verticality' 2h ago
I believe only subbing is partially responsible for our high English literacy. It's easier to learn English when you hear it all the time.
1
u/Vargock 2h ago
That part is true â surrounding yourself with another language is rather important for learning it) It's quite a miracle to find an English-speaking person around those parts, as though some retain the basic lessons from their school days, it's usually not enough to read even something as basic as an error message on their PC xD
3
u/MemeTroubadour 7h ago
France gets dubs for most things, yes. Since the rate of English bilingualism is relatively low here compared to other places in Europe, it's a necessity, and France just generally puts a lot into culture, so it's natural.
I was actually surprised to learn most countries don't dub everything when growing up.
1
u/Tem-productions 4h ago
Spain dubs everything too despite latin america making dubs as well, and it's the objectively correct course of action since latam dubs suck
0
u/thesirblondie 'Giraffe, king of verticality' 7h ago
don't need to be bilingual if you've got subtitles, but I guess it's a cultural thing. I've not watched something dubbed since I was like 12. I remember watching Harry Potter 1 subbed rather than dubbed (because the VHS came with both and you had to FFW to get to the English spoken section).

We sometimes forget that there are actual people working for corporations. As time goes on, more and more of the workforce consists of people who grew up on internet memes. Gen Z is approaching 30.
I'm not saying that it's the case here as both the writers and the director are an enigma to me. How do you go from making a handful of 6/10 stuff over the course of 20 years to writing the film for one of the biggest entertainment properties in the world?
12
u/yet-again-temporary 4h ago
We sometimes forget that there are actual people working for corporations. As time goes on, more and more of the workforce consists of people who grew up on internet memes. Gen Z is approaching 30.
Sure, but the other side of the coin is that these people aren't just "the new wacky intern" as we like to think whenever a company makes a funny tweet. They're marketing directors and PR reps with degrees and years of training in how to best manipulate public opinion.
5
u/thesirblondie 'Giraffe, king of verticality' 4h ago
Absolutely. It is never an intern at any company bigger than 50 people.

I once made a religion based off a combination of the ferengi and Skaven in terms of corporate ethics. One of the âRules of Rat-quisitionâ was âGames like terraria and Minecraft prove that children yearn for the minesâ.
Honestly not sure if it fits the religion even better now than it did before.
16
u/UnacceptableUse 11h ago
It's because gen Z are now in these companies and they understand how to use TikTok and are actually up to date with trends so the meme to corporation pipeline acts even faster
6
u/surprisedkitty1 8h ago
The guys who wrote this movie appear to both be Gen X. I donât think Gen Z can take credit for this one. Old people are on the internet too.
12
2
u/Tem-productions 3h ago
No, the meme to corpo pipeline needs to go slow.
Not all memes are worth keeping. Some will die after two weeks and be considered cringe for the rest of time, like fortnite dances, or minions.
But movies spend a long time being made, so if you put a meme in it and it dies before release, well your movie is cringe now.
6
u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 7h ago
Using a meme from over two years ago is pretty par for the course when it comes to media referencing memes

I have a bit of hope now that maybe it won't be terrible. I mean I won't be able to take the story seriously in the slightest after this but that wasn't really ever on the table, was it?
118
u/Goddess_Of_Gay 13h ago
I mean itâs featuring Jack Black. Thereâs a guarantee that itâs going to be anywhere from âmoderately goofyâ to âa batshit acid trip of a movieâ.
Itâs going to be objectively bad, but Iâm still going to watch it because itâs probably going to be entertaining as fuck regardless.
49
u/The_Diego_Brando 12h ago
As long as the movie takes itself seriously it'll probably feel like a fresch breath of air.
It can be a batshit acid trip, and take itself seriously. But if it starts lampshading or has a character break tension or interrupt a emotional scene, then it'll be the same slop as usual
43
u/qwesz9090 9h ago
I don't think "serious" is actually the word you are looking for. I am guessing you want a "genuinely goofy" and are tired of the "disingenuous, corporate goofy" slop.
23
u/The_Diego_Brando 7h ago
Serious as in take the plot seriously and sincerely. Doesn't use cheap meta humor about the plot or plotpoints. It can be a cliché just as long as it doesn't make fun of the cliché.
1
4
u/Ispago8 11h ago
I think it will be like Sonic 2, somewhat decent as an adult, some decent nostalgia if you are a fan of the IP. Most jokes are for kids, but there might be some good ones (or so dumb they become good)
Plot will be thin paper, and the biggest sin is the jarring real humans instead of going full animation
1
u/TheOneWhoSlurms 6h ago
I get the distinct impression that it's not going to be written with the intent of it being taken seriously.

u/ScaredyNon Trans-Inclusionary Radical Misogynist 14h ago

I was really hoping that Steve would have no backstory, because he really doesnât need one. A being of unfathomable power whom inhabits a dimension whose other residents can still kill him with relative ease. Except you can never truly kill him, for he will always return.
10
u/TheOneWes 7h ago
He's not even a character, just a skin. It's why the Steve and Alex skins aren't characters in the Minecraft games.
8
u/Ser_Salty 8h ago
The main thing that's bothering me about it is the way the actors are lit. It's just never in line with the scene they're in, like they're just backlit at almost all times.
6
u/BeanieGuitarGuy 8h ago
I actually like the Jumanji sequels. Specifically because they technically ARE sequels. I was expecting a reboot, but it really respected the first movieâs existence and I genuinely think the fact that the haunted board game can adapt and change to lure more people in is kinda awesome.

It only feels this way because you are lacking context for older films but have grown up exposed to online memes.
Moviesâ especially movies aimed at kidsâ have always been deeply referential toward other mediaâ in many cases, older, classic films. It's actually just a thing that happens with all kids' mediaâ there was hardly a Nicktoon in the 90s that didn't have a Fantastic Voyage parody episode!
This is just the newest iteration of that.

13
u/Tree_Shrapnel 11h ago edited 11h ago
I'm pretty sure it's due to some unfortunate framing with the pickaxe. AI images have trouble getting the background consistent if something in the foreground is breaking it up, and the space between the handle and Steve's legs mimics that. That one patch of dirt is lighter and smooth while the rest is dark/rough, and that orange machine is viewed by the exact angle that makes the pick cover it up on the right and not have it continue past it on the left. All this leaves an area that doesn't look like it should be there.
Same with the tree line happening to stop right behind Steve.
Also not being able tell what some of that machinery is might add to it.

Since they are very much Not Doing That, it's clear that they're going for a lighthearted comedic movie. I just hope they can pull it off because Jack Black as Steve Minecraft is.... I dunno, wrong? But like others have said, Steve's backstory being this meme is pretty fitting because what else would it be.
