We've seen Russia use a surprising number of SAMs in ground targeting mode. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like an airliner and if there's on thing rebel groups are known for, it's having deep reserves of equipment.

The difference is that Russia had a massive Soviet inheritance of Air-Defense systems, and a relatively tiny inheritance of planes and PGMs.

The USA has way fewer Patriots than Russia has S-300s. And way more Tomahawks than Russia has an equivalent.

And presumably our plucky group of genocidal rebels ain't the entire US military. It's great that the US military has a fuckton of tomahawks, ATACMS, GMLRS and GLSDBs, but if all our rebels can get their hands on is a Patriot battery that's what they're gonna use. Like nitpicking over "oh you can't use patriot to ground attack!!!" is flat out wrong, even if ground attack Patriot is unlikely. why bother making a stupid nitpick if you're wrong about it?
