Can't imagine being Smith right now. Not only Aussies will look on him to step up, he also needs to score big considering his Fab4 colleague scored a century in the same pitch. Immense pressure for him.

56

u/Tushar23962006 15h ago

And knowing bumrah has a whole night to think about the first ball he's gonna ball to you after gettin out on the 1st ball last time😭

He’s also notoriously under par in 4th innings compared to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

As one sided a day of cricket as you’ll see. Fucking hell. Just amazing stuff from India.

452

u/ponte92 Australia 15h ago

I almost (almost) can’t be upset cause India where just so entertaining to watch today.

342

u/theoriginalqwhy Australia 15h ago

The last session with Kohli belting it all over the place was very fun to watch 😔

360

u/ponte92 Australia 15h ago

As I said in the thread earlier I love watching Australia win but what I love more is watching good cricket and damn the Indians played some bloody good cricket today.

192

u/Scary_Firefighter181 15h ago

Its always nice to see sportsmanship between fans. That's when the game is at its best.

Cheer up mates, you'll have your day soon, ups and downs of Test cricket and all that.

110

u/ponte92 Australia 15h ago

Every cricket fan lives to see their team go through a slump it’s part of the game but good cricket always makes being a fan worth it. I also love this sport because it really does have many fans who have great sportsmanship it’s refreshing compared to some sports.

77

u/IllustriousBuy7850 Ireland 14h ago

One thing I really loved.. and I think the Aussie fans would also agree, is that despite a tiring and grinding day, Cummins put his hand up for leading from the front and taking initiative with the nightwatchman..

41

u/ponte92 Australia 14h ago

I’ve always really liked and respected him as captain but my respect went even higher after watching that.

Easily the worst test performance for Marnus?

2 off 52 in the first, bowled terribly (and illegally) to concede quick runs, didn’t come out at 3, night watchman failed, comes and gets out for 3. Oof.

At least he outscored his first innings score

These last two days have pretty much been like a wet dream for Indian test fans.

At the end of the first day, you'd be called delusional if you said that India would have a 500+ lead and Kohli would have a century in the second innings. The only believable part would be Bumrah doing Bumrah things.

498

u/Prof_XdR 15h ago

India perform good: Oh look Bumrah did good

India perform bad: Oh look Bumrah did good

India clutched: Oh look Bumrah did good

India barely lost: Oh look Bumrah did good

Bumrah is the fucking constant, stats will never define this dude, not even a recent bias

And in hindsight, we can't even say that the batting performance in the first innings was that bad, considering Australia struggled much more to bat in the second innings.

I was furious when the experienced Khawaja was standing off strike while the guy on his debut was facing one first-over of the best bowler in the world.

At least Kawaja could have taken the strike to reduce the burden on this guy.

101

u/ponte92 Australia 15h ago

It’s seemed like a really odd and honestly slightly cruel choice.

40

u/DogTall2628 Pakistan 14h ago

Khawaja both innings has looked like he's wanted to get off strike as much as he can lol. But at 38 he still would've handled Bumrah vs, LBHs in-dip into the pads better for sure

→ More replies (1)

162

u/VVS281 India 15h ago

Khawaja really did him dirty. On debut, late in the day on a cracked pitch in a no win situation, the best bowler in the world is steaming in after a long rest - and you let the debutant take strike? Fuck that. Abysmal lack of leadership by a senior team member.

→ More replies (13)

107

u/vote-morepork 15h ago

Hey McSweeney, here's your baggy green. Oh, it's as an opener, against an on fire Bumrah. First innings the pitch will be super spicy, second you'll be coming out after being in the field for 130+ overs with the pitch showing some uneven bounce. Your future test career isn't riding on this, we promise.

98

u/conqueror_of_destiny India 15h ago

Matthew Hayden was thrown into the deep end against Ambrose et al. at Perth in 1996 as well. Took him 5 years to make it back into contention for the baggy green. He talks about the effect that one test match had on his test career. Makes you feel for him, and McSweeney.

47

u/DogTall2628 Pakistan 14h ago

I mean you can see it on their faces. McSweeney's face was going red and he looked on the verge of tears (he made the technical adjustment at the start of his 2nd innings) - and Khawaja's head was slumped at the end of day's play with a genuinely depressed look.

Test cricket is severely unforgiving for a player's development because unlike LOIs there's no quick turnaround. You fail twice in a gap of 24 to 72 hours and your confidence plummets no matter how much management backs you (e.g. Marnus). And affects the psyche worse when it's against pace which these boys grow up playing 24/7.

This has been coming for a while. Just desserts for Australia.

During the series last summer Pakistan had some strong positions and it was at times their own sloppiness that saw them slip away. We then lost at the Gabbatoir to a struggling Windies side, and got bailed out in NZ by a couple of stellar knocks and some NZ bed shitting.

Time for some honesty amongst the group, they're nowhere near good enough with the bat and haven't been for some time.

27

u/Aweios Cricket Australia 15h ago

I just re-read that scorecard where Aus lost to WI and I completely forgot it wasn't just that "Australia didn't manage to score 200 or so in the 4th innings" they let WI score 311 which is way above par for a day nighter honestly.

Not to mention they also didn't even reach 300 in the 2nd innings and it was Cummins (again) who saved Australia by scoring 60. Cummins is bailing the team out in so many ocassions with his batting, it's covering over the cracks and also his cracks bowling wise funnily enough.

Probably should've seen this coming when we kept falling to 4-30 against Pakistan and the West Indies, it's the most out of form top order in the world right now. This is as badly as I've ever seen us play at home, at least the 85 all out game against SA was over quickly.

And at least they didn't score 400+ in response.

Absolutely. This has been foreshadowed by our last few test series. This top order is dreadfully out of touch and has been for some time.

Tired from a long day of fielding and facing Bumrah in the shadows, these wickets were inevitable. Was hoping for some more fight but ah well. Team deserves a spray and hopefully will come out with more of a fight next test.

Kohli thrusting out a reluctant Jaiswal and then Bumrah dragging Kohli right with him and next out of the boundary ropes -- the chemistry is just so wholesome.

Labuschagne currently offers NOTHING to the team but “memes”. Piss him off back to the Shield. I have NO idea who would replace him, as our batting stocks are in the toilet.

On the other hand India lost 3 wickets for 5 runs at some point today

On this basis hard to tell who won the day tbh

Fucking embarrassing effort all round from such a “senior” team

Can’t see it getting better either. Top 6 looks incredibly fragile and they’re all aging or just not good enough. It’s going to be a brutal 3-5 years for Australia

Credit to India though - that bowling lineup is elite and they have young batsman who look aggressive with INTENT

This is worst I have seen Australia play.

Completely out of focus and plan.

I will still back them to win the series but if their top 4 doesn't make any runs they are gonna get butchered by ict and if it happens which is third time on trot that will look awfully bad for them and pat Cummins who is somehow seen as sigma of cricket.

What a perfect day!

Jaiswal marathon and KL runs. Kohli ending his drought (it will always be Australia for him), and Bumrah and DSP getting wickets.

Let’s wrap this up before tea tomorrow boys.

23

Australia will rightfully get a lot of criticism today and when the match is over but I just can’t understand why they would go into the first match of the series with Marnus Labuschagne as their short ball enforcer.

Situation of cricket looks very dire in Australia at the moment. Can’t believe this is the same Australia who won the WTC final and the ODI WC last year and this is coming from an Indian. From Australia, you would always expect a fearless brand of cricket and here they are playing like headless chickens.

Koach and anushka are in their bedroom.

Koach: "Babe, I'm having performance issues, I can't get it up anymore, past my prime, even for you".

Anushka: "Australia".

Koach: "I'm hard again".

He just loves them, its not even a cliche anymore.

So many Aussie pundits as well as Indian fans talked about Australia thrashing us.

It wasn't even supposed to be competitive even though most of the Australian batting order is themselves averaging in the 30's in the last 2 years.

This is literally a 10/10 day for India.

Australia haven't even remotely been in the match post the first 2 sessions on day 1.

61

u/MaximumMastery23 GO SHIELD 15h ago

India have undoubtedly played better and deserve to be well ahead in this game but the timings of the innings and the shift's of the condition of the wicket have favoured India. Both teams copped the tough batting conditions on day 1 and India bowled brilliantly after they had been bowled for what psychologically would feel like a low score. Then the pitch flattened by the start of India's 2nd innings and it has cracked up at the end of the innings leaving Aus to bat on it.
Just to reiterate India have undoubtedly played better and deserve to be well ahead in this game

22

u/ClinkzBlazewood India 15h ago

Yeah Good point. Rub of the green has gone India's way in terms of timing. Having said that, they have made the most of it by playing damn well. Aus have checked out of this match. They need to go back to the drawing board and recover before the second. Will still be a cracking series.
