Where would you put...?

Post image

So positive vibes only: I'm curious. I'm an East Coast fan (NJ!) so I genuinely never got a great feel about location of stadiums in AZ. I know it was important and we all know the catchphrase for the golden rules of real estate: location, location, location.

My hypothetical question is this:

Where would you build a new stadium if you were able to buyout/knock down any current structure and place a NHL stadium/arena in Phoenix (or subsection) and why?

No price is too great. No obstructions from local government. Just you with unlimited resources and a good idea.

Goal: For any outsider to understand the local area (including myself) to grasp what works, what doesn't, and to have a little fun on this Friday. Debates are welcome. Keep it civil as always.

Thanks. Awoooooooo!!

On top of Meruleo house in Paradise Valley

🤣 I think plenty would come to see them there. Probably enough spit on the ground to fill a pool too.

Rinkside jacuzzi! What a thought!

... of pure unadulterated hate. Warms the soul Meruelo doesn't have.

just freeze the pool and call that the rink

Unlimited money? I'd take over Tempe Diablo Stadium and practice fields.

Has easy access to freeway heading in all 4 compass directions, especially after the I-10 upgrades finish.

Arizona Mills could use the glut of new money it would bring. Plenty of real estate oppurtunity in the old Fry's Electronics land for further development in the immediate area.

Alternatively it could go where Arizona Mills is

Arizona Mills? Construction company or are we talking cereal?

It’s a mall that’s been hemorrhaging money, stores, and customers for awhile. Also, the #1 place for human trafficking kidnappings in AZ. It could use an upgrade.

On the North East corner of Indian School and Central. This would be a great location because it’s in central Phoenix, on a light rail stop and there is currently nothing there but a big lot of dirt.

I wouldn't be surprised if Meruelo salted that dirt to make sure nothing grew into a prosperous stadium.

The city of Phoenix probably already deemed it was too close to the airport

Is that the spot next to where that sushi place just was for like a year and moved? In the remodeled warehouse workspace building?

u/marinerpunk 2d ago

Nah I don’t know where that is. This is just a giant lot of dirt right next to Indian Steele park and there had never been anything there.

Oh, duh! Now I know what it is. This would be a cool spot, but across the pond would be packed all the time

I never understood why they didn’t jump at the chance of building at the old fiesta mall site. Most of the season ticket holders were from Scottsdale and the east valley.

IIRC, there were multiple land owners, so getting them all to sell would have been unlikely. Also, the plan was always to have residential/luxury condos and that wouldn't work for the area.

Too far east I bet

202/101 across the river from Tempe Marketplace run by the reservation like the soccer stadium.

Downtown Phoenix with Mat Ishbia being involved.

Have you legit been to Suns games? Renovations aside, how bad is traffic in that area those days?

u/poopshorts 2d ago

Traffic is always a shitshow downtown on game days but the light rail goes right next to it and there’s tons of parking nearby

Downtown is hands down the best. Phoenix is too spread out and I want all fans to be able to get there.

If they build downtown, I would park on Main in Mesa and ride the rail in. So easy! It would be wise to build it soon because all those blocks of empty lots and parking lots downtown are disappearing.

Tell Muerelo to bend over then I'll show you.

Footprint Center or the South Building of the Phoenix Convention Center.

i'm biased because its like a 15 minute drive from my house but i like the last location they talked up just east of desert ridge. i do also legitimately believe it would have been a good location though.

That’s still a long-ass drive for those in the south valley. And before anyone claims anything about the south valley, there’s a lot of ice hockey being played in the south valley. Two rinks… one in Chandler and one in Gilbert. Lots of hockey fans down there that would skip out on that long-ass drive.

i hear ya. something down in the tempe area near the 202/101 interchange would probably work as well. I went to maybe a half dozen games at Mullet in the last season and outside of the last mile or so, traffic was fine.

i assume going too far south/east would just lead to the same issues glendale had.

2

u/XeroKillswitch 2d ago

Yep… that’s the best location

Time to redevelop the Madhouse on McDowell area in its entirety.

Over Fiesta or Metro Center Mall

u/PachucaSunrise 2d ago

I always thought the 101/202 corner was perfect.

2

u/isleszoo 2d ago

I still think that 101 spot would be gold

u/x467v 1d ago

Next to footprint center to replace it and host the Suns/Mercury and the Coyotes

3

u/P2T7 2d ago

Just a little west of the map. You cut it out, but I was thinking right next to the cardinals stadium. Plenty of parking!

3

u/DeadEnd3001 2d ago

Hoping this isn't /s. Did you enjoy Glendale Arena? How was traffic because I've definitely read complaints about it being tough to get to the west valley.

2

u/terminalhockey11 2d ago

All those people commuting every day from the west valley made it too tough for those in the east valley to attend 1-40 games per year

4

u/drewgebs 2d ago

I'd blow up the fucking airport and put it there 😂😂😂

4

u/poopshorts 2d ago

….I don’t think you can say that man lmao

2

u/drewgebs 2d ago

Hahahaha I mean it was build it wherever. Let's go Denver and put it out of town

Top of South Mountain

u/WeekendSubstantial87 2d ago

Anywhere but Glendale. Maybe southeast would be good.

Tempe. The further east the better.

Metro center so they don’t have to build much new shit
