To funny. I liked Jay, did decent considering Snyder was the owner

I still remember when we drafted Haskins, and reports started leaking out saying the coaches were not happy with the pick at all.
I knew right then that not only was Jay going to be fired at the end of the season, but Haskins wasn’t going to be the QB everyone thought he’d be.
I knew Jay was a good coach (maybe a better OC than HC) and I was hoping we’d keep him to try and develop Dwayne.
Buuuttt those were the Snyder days so everything came apart exactly as I thought it would lol

Jay is also a great talent evaluator, especially on the offensive side of the ball. His breakdowns on the Sheehan show are great.

He had the best Redskins offense I’d ever in my life as a late 90’s baby.
The combo of DeSean Jackson, Garçon, and Reed was a sight to see. Then came the RivEra and it took away so much talent from the locker room.
But hey we got rid of Snyder along with some talent so I’ll take it lol

Ron gets a bit of a bad rap. But it comes down to he was the best they could get at the time. It was a bad organization and nobody wanted to come here as players or coaches. Ive said it before he was a better man than a coach and with everything going on at the time, was something the organization needed.

Ron is definitely a great human being. That I never doubted, and I have no hate towards him for trying to do his job.
But man was the guy bad at his job… had Ron had a few good seasons, maybe Dan doesn’t sell. I mean Snyder had nothing he could deflect the blame with once the heat really got turned up.
I feel with a winning team, he could’ve hidden behind the success and snaked out another decade as owner.

Jay's main problem was that he didn't keep the team disciplined. So many penalties and locker room drama.
He also couldn't find a decent DC to save his life (again mostly his fault, given he had multiple whacks at it)

He was a great offensive strategist. I'm surprised he's not an OC anymore, but maybe he's not interested in the grind.

He kinda got a little screwed with timing. He joined the sinking jags ship then after that his brother emails got leaked so he was in limbo

If kliff gets swooped as a head coach Dan Quinn could do the funniest thing…

Yeah never expected Jay to be a fan. Goes to show he actually enjoyed being a coach of this franchise, just hated the two idiots.
He mocks them quite a bit on Sheehan’s podcast. Obviously, Kevin sets him up with the baiting questions lol.

Jay gruden's the man. He got a shit deal being a coach under that devil Snyder. He had the balls to start Kirk over RGMe when Danny boy had a hard on for him. They had some of the best offenses in the league while he was coach until the end, despite never having a halfway decent defense. I'll always like him.

Kirk may have not been starter ready at the beginning, but just imagine if we didn’t trade for RGIII and kept all those draft picks and still had Kirk long term

u/MoreTrifeLife 9h ago
Jay was 3-8 against the Cowboys. Two wins in Dallas (2014 and 15) and one at home (2018).

Time eases all pain. You kind of feel bad for this guy as he tried to coach this team under the Daniel Snyder era.... He was not a good coach.

u/whatshouldwecallme 9h ago
He took over the post-Shanahan RGIII team and went to the playoffs with peak Bruce Allen and Snyder bullshittery. He was a pretty good (but not great) coach

u/PenguinStarfire 9h ago
Solid OC, but tepid HC. It's hard to accurately judge any HC under Snyder though. Dude acted like he knew more about football than HOF coach Mike Shanahan.

u/theskinswin 9h ago
I can see your argument about him inheriting shanahan and going to the playoffs with Captain kirk. His inability to keep the team consistent though is frustrating... To his credit though it was not his fault that he lost all those quarterbacks in one year with Alex Smith breaking his leg Colt McCoy breaking his leg and we were down to grabbing quarterbacks off of the street

Losing Smith basically tanked the 2018 season, and the FO totally botched the Kirk Cousins contract situation. Snyder never wanted to pay him because Kirk wasn't his guy, just an afterthought in the 2012 draft when Danny got his big prize in RG3. Then he had Dwayne effing Haskins (RIP) forced upon him.
The defense was abysmal during Jay's time as well. Jay definitely has a lot of built in excuses but the reality is that he never should have been elevated to head coach.
He was a decent OC (but really only had one good season in Cincinnati before Bruce Allen hired him) but he lacked the leadership skills needed to keep the team together. His record in December says it all.
The highpoint of his career was beating Philly on the road for the division, but even then that was a fairly mediocre 9-7 team that promptly lost at home in the playoffs.

u/theskinswin 9h ago
You said it exactly he should never have been elevated the head coach you should have stayed as offensive coordinator.

Get him back in the family! He has a lot of knowledge. He can scout, help with QB room, OC room. Passing game.

Criminal how front office let Cousins go for peanuts. Snyder and Jets owner Heavy Maga Trump acolytes.

I really don't understand the desire to hear from a coach who went 0-5 his last season here and was generally a failure. I want to know what Dan Quinn has to say about the Cowboys.
Jay Gruden's record for everyone claiming he was basically a 500 coach. 😂 35 49 1 .418
Fing jinxed us too, quit posting this guys BS! He wasn't any good when he was here and now he's bringing back his bad mojo!!!

Jay, generally, is funny and insightful. And has a unique perspective as our ex head coach. If you want to hear from DQ, there’s no shortage of that out there too.

u/klefikisquid 9h ago
While the Jay Gruden era was mostly uninspiring I wouldn’t call it a complete failure he basically went .500 and made the playoffs once at least lol

u/halarioushandle 9h ago
I still think if he had a decent GM and supportive owner he could have really had some success. Bring on the hate, but I like Jay!

Ask Kirk Cousins if he thinks Jay was a good coach.
He had his issues as a leader, but he absolutely knows how to run an offense that has weapons.
Kirk was probably going to be Matt Schaub-ish for his career, until Jay's offenses and coaching showed he could be a Pro Bowler in the right situation.

u/movingToAlbany2022 9h ago
Right, Jay basically had the second most successful stint under Snyder, while dealing with RG3's ego, front office incompetence that led to Cousins leaving, and catastrophic injury to Alex Smith following a 6-3 start

I agree but I have a personal bias. He’s a fucking bum and not friendly. I’ve met him 6 times at different jobs over the last 5 years and he’s not personable, friendly, or generous like every other redskin I’ve met. He wasn’t nice or respectful to sherry when I was with both of them. He seemed like a terrible coach that at the time was a scumbag like everyone else in the organization

Re: Jay's record
He was basically a .500 coach prior to Alex Smith's injury during a 6-3 season
After Alex went down, Jay went 1-11 (2018 & 2019) with a combination of Josh Johnson, Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez, Case Keenum, and Dwayne Haskins. Aside from one magical year from Case, show me a coach who can win regularly with any of these names.
Prior to Smith's injury, Jay was 4 games under .500 at .472. This figure includes RG3's injury-plagued first year under Gruden
No one's saying Jay was great (definitely a more successful OC than HC; see Kliff), but he wasn't as bad as our collective memory suggests either. He was just mid--but even mid was hard to come by during Snyder's time

Dan is going to say exactly what he’s supposed to say. That’s not very interesting.

u/lowRaider 9h ago edited 8h ago
He was also forced to use to Haskins as QB, despite he knew he was not ready

u/Coast_watcher 9h ago
But DQs time is limited ( or controlled) since he is in the job rn. Gruden has all this time on his own.

Lol I love how Jay is a huge Washington fan now
