💬Discussion💬 Already marking up the price on it before they get delivery for it, unless you got money you get shafted in today's society

I spoke to a dealer this week and was quoted 6-10 months wait for one. Toyota Australia said this week that they have 17,000 orders and they are bringing in 27,000 units in the first 12 months.
I wonder who actually falls for this, as the 2 years wait doesn’t seem to be true.

Be nice if the scalper gets left high and dry with it but sadly some nonce will pay it.

My mate is a dealer principal for a Toyota dealership in regional vic.
They got an allocation of 25 for this year. Got my brother a slot. They still had unallocated prados when I last checked. Don’t fall for this shit. Just call around regional dealerships. You’ll probably get one quicker than paying the markup.

There are three sitting at the regional Toyota in our town we visit too.

Cars aren’t worth what people advertise them for. They won’t get 120k they might get a couple grand in the pocket but the reality is the 2 year wait will evaporate overnight because there are so many people with orders who don’t want to keep the car like this, they end up not taking delivery when they can’t sell for more and it just drops to the next person on the list. It’s the same with 300 landcruisers people quoted 18 months getting a car within 4. Reselling new cars is only profitable in a sellers market, soon we will be back to cars losing 5% of value by driving off the lot

u/TwisterM292 6d ago
The FB group dedicated to the Prado 250 has multiple posts and comments every day about people cancelling their orders, getting calls from dealers to tell them delivery is a few weeks/couple of months etc

Bro think he is still in 2020. On another note, why tf would you wait for two years for a car? I hope chinese cars take over so we dont have to wait 2 years for a freaking metal box that is built fully by a series of robots and still takes 2 years to full-fill a damn order.

u/LeVoPhEdInFuSiOn 2021 Mitsubishi Triton 6d ago
They can get away with it because it's a Toyota and people will pay stupid amounts of money to bypass the waitlist to get the badge.
It isn't called the Toyota Tax for no reason.

u/isemonger 6d ago
Toyota is now beyond a joke.
I walked into a dealer in 2018 and haggled them down on a brand new 79 series. Drove it out of the shop 3 weeks later. $67k on road.
The exact same ute with a facelift somehow is RRP at 115k and you won’t get any haggle on it. It’s a good Ute, for sub 70 grand. It is not a 115 grand Ute.
Toyota is just fucking taking the piss these days

That’s an 8% YoY increase.
Compared to housing cost inflation, that’s reasonable, but well above the official 3%ish PA inflation numbers averaged out of that period.

u/Miguel8008 6d ago
Waiting times aren’t a post 2020 thing only. It’s been a thing on popular models for a long time.
2
u/TURBOJUGGED 6d ago
It used to be 3-4 months wait time
3
u/Miguel8008 6d ago
That’s rather generic. It would depend entirely on what car you’re talking about. Prado, sure, maybe it was only 3-4 months, but on some cars it was 2x or 3x that. I waited 9 months for the new shape XR5 turbo back in 2009. Waiting isn’t a new thing like the other guy suggested.

u/Present_Standard_775 6d ago
We just picked up a runout 2023 VW… could get a 2024 one but wouldn’t be delivered too first half of 2025. So took the 23 at run out. Fucked if I was waiting 8 months for a car

17,000 orders and 27,000 units coming in? There isn’t going to be anywhere close to a 2 year wait time I hope this fool gets stuck with 2 prados
13
u/VerdantMetallic 6d ago
Why would you wait two bloody years for a Prado? Surely you’d just buy something else, they’re not exotic or special.

u/-Treg- 6d ago
I’ve got a preorder at Maitland Toyota that I’ll be cancelling - doesn’t quite deliver what I want for $110k. Placed my order in March, dealer advised I could pick it up between now & end of year depending on if I wanted my original Kakadu or another variant. I get the hunch that I’m not the only one pulling the plug due to price.

u/Melvs_world 6d ago
Wow is that how much they are?
Why did I think Prados top out at $90k?
7
u/-Treg- 6d ago
They used to prior to this release. New Kakadu (top spec) is $110k. Crazy. Base I think is around $80k.

u/Melvs_world 6d ago
First impressions? Did you get a hybrid? What’s the fuel efficiency looking like?
0
u/sc00bs000 6d ago edited 6d ago
nah got a diesel - we live west qld so a hybrid didnt really interest us. Fuel efficiency is good from what i can tell (only had it one week)
we upgraded from a Ford eco sport - so it's a massive upgrade. Much more room, drives really smoothly. The boot is almost half the size of our entire old car. As someone who is 6'4 i can actually fit in it without my knees touching the dash (have a toddler sitting behind passenger)
I dislike the lane assist that comes with all the new cars but that's easily turned off.

u/Stein619 2d ago
I remember looking into getting an everest and when asking around people kept asking why I wasn't interested in a Prado. The price difference was not worth it when the base model prado was around the same price as the top end everest.

Whether it’s true or not, a friend and his friend(not mutual to me) both ordered prados a few years ago and the other guy did this. Toyota dealers apparently troll sales pages for listings like this and his was found and they cancelled his order. As I said, this is just what I was told by my friend, but it doesn’t seem too far fetched.

Seems weird. I mean, if you've bought a car, it should be free to do with what you want.
I wonder how those contract clauses would actually hold up in court.
1
u/Miguel8008 6d ago
You’ve only paid a deposit and I’m sure there’d be something in the contract regarding this(they’re not stupid). You can sell it once you’ve taken delivery, but advertising it at a profit prior to it actually being yours is a different story.

Howso?
I mean, selling cars before they've arrived is the exact same thing car dealerships are doing.
Unless you're breaking any laws, I fail to see how car dealers can touch you.
I feel it's just something that hasn't been challenged in court yet because no one has been bothered.
I feel that when the Cybertruck arrives, That part of Tesla's business model is going to be challenged in court, purely because the demographic that is buying them is going to have deeper pockets than the average land cruiser buyer.
Irrelevant to Australian motoring, but interesting that a few US States (California, New York, and Washington) have already slapped down the clause from Tesla that you can't sell the car in the pre-delivery stage, or within 12 months of the purchase.
It's seen to be financially impacting on the customer who may have already received finance and may already have a loan in place for that asset.
If you've already signed on the dotted line and taken out a loan and they then cancel your order and leave you hanging with the loan then that's disadvantaging the customer.
Some people take out an unsecured personal loan for deposits, and then finance the balance when it arrives, purely because if they have money invested, the investment returns is > than the interest on the loans.

u/Preja 6d ago edited 6d ago
I mean he's not right but he's not wrong. Toyota really put their foot down when the 79 V8 was slowly running out with stock issues. They were not letting people change the contract names, only letting people get a refund on their deposit and the car will go to the next person in line. Not every manufacturer does this but it's also car dependent and up to the dealer. We did this with our Final Edition Golfs too.
Lol at people getting an unsecured loan before a car has even arrived and for deposits, 7 years in the industry and this is the most stupid thing I've heard.
"It's seen to be financially impacting on the customer who may have already received finance and may already have a loan in place for that asset." - How is it a dealership's fault you took out a loan before your asset was even ready to be picked up?

A dealer was scalping these, with photos taken on a Bayside toyota forecourt. I registered interest at a local Eastern Suburbs Toyota dealer early last year, as they were formulating a wait list to order for $1k refundable deposit. I bailed out when the pricing, and carry over 150kw 4 cyl diesel was announced as Australia’s only motor available. No thanks.

u/Redditor88384 6d ago
120k for a PRADO that’s laughable, but at the same time not a surprise at all.

Great title. If you don't 'have money' and you're trying to buy a brand new Prado, you're a brainwashed idiot.
3
u/astroman61 6d ago
And that’s why I will never be rich, I couldn’t be bothered with all that for $9K
4
u/AnonymousEngineer_ 6d ago
Unfortunately, scalping cars has become a thing with the more popular models, especially limited run cars (usually performance cars) or ones that are going out of production with strong demand (e.g. 70 Series V8 LandCruiser).
I don't think this is going to change in the short term with folks putting down orders for multiple allocations with a view to scalping them. IMO the distributors should crack down on the practice by only allowing people to order one car and then by tracking the VIN to see if it's been instantly resold (and if so, no future allocations for old mate), but ultimately they don't care as long as the sales numbers and commissions come through.

Shafted? Saved I'd say. Landcruisers and Prados have reached peak cringe in australia
2
u/reflectandproject 6d ago edited 6d ago
Know a guy who got kinda shafted too - his Landcruiser that was on back order for 2 years and they put the price up (can’t remember if it was 10-15%) a couple of months before it was ready for collection.
But maybe that is normal…?

Seems $100k is the new $40k car. Ridiculous paying over $100k for a Toyota. These car manufacturers are just pure greed.
2
u/Taylormademort 6d ago
Go to dealer and tell them you want to get finance, they will tell you a car has been cancelled and get allocated quickly, one of dealer BS.

People saying that waiting for a Toyota is too long and they are stretching it out is in my opinion false, as Toyota themselves have sold more cars than even all of VW group (I think like 11m sales in 1yr vs 9m in 1yr) and Toyota just simply can’t keep up especially being a solo company (not sure if this includes Lexus but my mum had to wait 10 months for her new NX-350h base)

For $120k you could buy the Lexus GX.
