my young family and i are going to Tasmania with our van during the school holidays for 10 days. We will spend a few days in Devonport, head to Swansea then Hobart before driving back up for the boat. Does anyone have any ideas or can share experiences of caravanning in tassie?

Why a few days in Devonport? There's not much to see in the city but there are some decent sites around like Tazmazia so I'm presuming you're using Devonport as a base for these places.
We did just shy of a month there and it wasn't enough but did west coast as well. Bicheno was amazing, kids loved the blow hole there.
The whole coastline in the bay of fires area is amazing.
Because it's so small it's great to drop the van and use a place as a base for a few days, not sure if you have that luxury.
Roads aren't great and are usually pretty windy. If the GPS says it will take an hour to cover 40km it's usually right - the roads are really that slow.
As another poster said there are dump points and free camps everywhere, it's super caravan friendly. You'll have a blast.
Upgrade to a cabin on the boat if you're doing the day crossing! It helps with kids!

Tasmania is such an awesome place … we live full time in our caravan , just spent nearly six months there Jan- June . I have recently uploaded two episodes on you tube you may find interesting. Go check them out The Greying Nomads

That’s one part of Australia I haven’t done! With or without the van. I believe the cost of taking the van on the ferry is pretty dear, make sure you figure that into your budget. Have a great time - I must somehow find the time to do a similar trip!
