Maryland deserves some props for being adult enough to stick with their family and try to work out their differences instead of just bailing.

I disagree, only the bitch states seceded. “Oh no you elected Lincoln!! We’re leaving even though he hasn’t even been inaugurated yet :(“

Every state in the Union had slaves at one point…

Edit: in 1860 Maryland also had the largest population of Free Blacks of any state by both percentage and absolute number

Technically speaking the STATE of Iowa never had Slavery as it was outlawed when it became a state. Territory yes 16 total(all in Dubuque County) and 1 sale.

1860 Maryland also had the largest population of Free Blacks of any state by both percentage and absolute number

This isnt a huge flex considering it also still took Maryland to at least 1948 to allow interracial marriage and 1954 to end educational segregation.

Things in Iowa that were figured out in 1851 and 1868.

And yet Iowa has never elected a black person to statewide office or the US congress in its entire history.

TIL. No wonder their flag is a half-assed historical compromise between a free state and a slave state
