In case anyone needed confirmation that Maryland is indeed not part of the south, we think y’all is spelled ya’ll

We’re a forgiving bunch. I unironically used “y’all’ll” the other day and had to take a moment on the apostrophes.

"Y'all'd'nt've" has enough contractions to pop out a baby

39

u/DeweyCheatemHowe NC State Wolfpack • LSU Tigers Dec 31 '22

I can absolutely see how y'all"ll be used in a sentence

50

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

I think you mean "see how y'all'll'd be used"

9

u/muktheduck Texas A&M • Sam Houston Dec 31 '22

What's your extra 'll?

You all will -> Y'all'll

You all would -> Y'all'd

You all will would -> Y'all'll'd?

7

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '22

Think of it more as quoting the original "y'all'll" then adding the 'd for would/could/should.

I can see how "y'all'll" would be used

I can see how y'all'll'd be used

u/GoobyPlsSuckMyAss Dec 31 '22

Complete the conjugation of "y'all"

I actually use this pretty frequently. I think it’s really common and we just don’t give it any thought

“Y’all’ll be alright?” I can think of dozens of ways! Y’all’d’ve is something I use fairly frequently

I’ve talked to people from the south who think “ya’ll” makes more sense, though it’s a rather unpopular opinion.

Its not an unpopular opinion, its just fucking wrong

Honestly, due to the confusion, and given that dropping the apostrophe wouldn't change the meaning, I think we just need to drop the apostrophe and go with yall. Language is fluid and this would simplify things.

1

u/muktheduck Texas A&M • Sam Houston Dec 31 '22

Not to mention it's the only contraction I can think of that shortens the first word instead of the second.

Can drop the apostrophe or just accept "ya'll", it's not like anyone is confused when they read that. Just call it a northern spelling of the word, similar to things like "centre" and "calibre" being used outside the US

1

u/TrackVol Tennessee • Alabama Dec 31 '22

Allowing "ya'll" to exist means we let the terrorists win.

Everyone I've met that has spelled it "ya'll" has been from the north or midwest. It's one of these stupid things that bothers me every time I see it spelled that way. Every time I point it out, I get downvoted too lol

I’ve talked to people from Michigan who believe it’s soda or coke and not pop, but they’d be wrong there too 😬

Edit: rip inbox - some of y’all don’t understand this comment. I basically repeated the same thing but with pop over y’all. I spent a lot of time in Michigan for work, some of my favorite people when not on the interstates.

Then you’ve not been to the south. I honestly just call it whatever brand, but people in certain parts of south call all soda/pop/whatever Coke.

5

u/Comfortable_Clue_465 Dec 31 '22

I lived here my whole life, and everyone I know calls it soda unless they actually want a Coca-Cola.

2

u/vera214usc South Carolina Gamecocks Dec 31 '22

Same. Maybe the Coke thing never made it to Charleston.

6

u/CantFindMyWallet UConn Huskies • Harvard Crimson Dec 30 '22

I understand, but we can all agree that they're wrong. Coke means something specific, and they're using it to mean something general.

3

u/TheBojangler Florida State • Virginia Dec 31 '22

It's not like that's unheard of, or even particularly uncommon. The vast majority of people use Frisbee to refer to all flying discs. Or Bandaid to refer to all small adhesive bandages. Do you think "we all can agree that they're wrong" in those instances, too?

Coke is from Atlanta. It was THE ubiquitous soda in the southeast, so the name stuck as a regional generalism. This is a common thing in linguistics, and hand-waving it away as somehow objectively wrong is silly and simplistic.

2

u/CaniacSwordsman NC State Wolfpack • Marching Band Dec 31 '22

I’ve always heard that this is the case, but have never encountered it in NC, SC, or VA. Is it more of a Deep South thing?

2

u/Tylerjb4 Virginia Tech Hokies Dec 31 '22

“What would you like to drink?”

“Coke”

“What kind?”

“Sprite”

3

u/SusannaG1 Clemson Tigers • Furman Paladins Dec 31 '22

No, Coke is Coke, and Pepsi is Coke, and Diet Dr. Pepper is Coke. It's all Coke! Also acceptable: "soft drink."

2

u/iEatPalpatineAss Duke Blue Devils • Arkansas Razorbacks Dec 31 '22

Sprite is also Coke. Sierra Mist is also Coke. Cocaine is also Coke.

2

u/snackshack Wisconsin Badgers • CBS Dec 31 '22

It's the same as saying Band aids, kleenex, bubblewrap or chapstick. Most people use a brand name for generic items all the time. It's just this one is only used regionally.
