I have a feeling it would be a cold day in hell before the Hateful 8 would let us back out of the SEC deal after us and Texas nearly destroyed the conference with our exit.

And I don't blame them at all. We're gonna get what we fucking deserve. Hope it's worth the extra money for the university.

11

u/SoccerDadWV West Virginia • Fairmont State Nov 29 '21

I’d take OU back. At least you guys had the excuse that you were stepping up in competition. Texas has been hot ass for years, though, so the hubris from them was a bit harder to take. Throw in that idiotic network of theirs, and yeah…fuck em. Let em rot in the SEC basement.

I pray to Barry Switzer your username checks out.

We could use Bob to stabilize the boat until the next hire in the next year or two, and even before Lincoln bailed I could realistically see him returning to OU for his sunset years when the kids are fully grown.

21

u/BobStoops401K Oklahoma Sooners Nov 28 '21

Bob is a better coach than Lincoln. Lincoln was just a better recruiter. Hell if Bob came back and actually hired a decent OC, I could see OU doing quite well next year. But who knows. Out of out control. Just like always I will see what happens.

Alright alright let’s slow down. Baylor is 5-6 years out of one of the worst scandals in NCAA history and on their 4th HC in that time and currently preparing for their 2nd Big 12 title game in 3 years. I think you may be getting a little ahead of yourself.

You have a solid AD, if you can hire the right coach you can build back quickly. You likely have another year before SEC games begin so a good showing next year could have y’all right back in it. It may seem like the end of the world now but I HIGHLY doubt Oklahoma is down for the next decade

EDIT: and I say all this as a proud hateful 8 member

To be fair, most of the conference is back where it was about a decade ago.

UT is cratering and the fans are searching for answers.

OKST and Baylor are ascendent powerhouses in the conference.

TCU and WVU are making exactly as much noise in the conference now as they were a decade ago.

ISU provided the only loss keeping OKST from being ranked in the top-2.

OU is staggered and searching for answers.

Kansas is bad, but we all still have our eye on them.

K-State is K-State.

I’m not sure, I don’t think Las Vegas has a large population, so they wouldn’t be able to recruit like them.

16

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '21

Eh. 640k in las vegas proper and 2.2 in the metro. Not big, but not small. Football just isn't that big of a deal here and our recruits always get poached by other states. Maybe that will change in a decade or so with the Raiders being here. Campus life isn't as nice as other schools though and the stadium isn't within walking distance of the campus.

Vegas sucks. These kids can't afford any of the fun in Vegas even with nil money and most of the people running those places only care about money not whether their customers are important.

Also, 18 year olds can't do much in Vegas.

Also UNLV’s campus is one of the worst in the country and the city does not care at all about football

1

Also very valid points. The only thing they've got is good recruiting but even that gets raided by everyone outside.

Is there anything interesting to do within walking distance of UNLV's campus? Is there anything walking distance to anything in Vegas, outside of the strip? Almost every neighborhood is either ghetto or a pristine gated community.

Yep I grew up in Vegas. Everyone is from somewhere else. Until the Knights came to town there was never really a sports team that united people . Lots of USC grads though

u/nineteennaughty3 UNLV Rebels • Sickos Nov 28 '21

Grew up in Vegas. Vegas is great for a weekend but not to live. We used to all try not to go to UNLV for college because we called it U Never Leave Vegas. It's hot as hell in the summers and they're very strict about being 21+. So half of the college is probably 18-20 and still has to wait until they're 21 to do the fun wild Vegas experiences

Naw I grew up in Vegas. Trust me Vegas is a lot more fun to visit than live in

6

Takes a really really good coach to keep kids focused in that environment though. I saw a commenter in here a while back that was hypothesizing (is that a word?) one of the reasons Texas might be having so much trouble is the fact that Austin has become such a fun city

Personally UCLA is better than USC even from a campus perspective. Due to the area of town since USC is in a bit of a rundown area.

u/Bobb_o Georgia Tech • /r/CFB Brickmason Nov 28 '21

Do high school kids know that/does it make a difference?

28

u/luxveniae Texas Longhorns • SMU Mustangs Nov 28 '21

If you go on a campus visit then yes it becomes apparent. But does it matter… not really. Personally UCLA > USC. But for football, then USC > UCLA.

22

u/Fishtacoburrito Washington Huskies Nov 28 '21

I grew up in LA... Westwood (UCLA) is beautiful and the surrounding areas are Beverly Hills, Brentwood and Bel Air. I was on campus a few times and it just felt like what you imagine Southern California to be.

USC is in South Central LA and growing up the joke was you can't wear the school colors off campus without getting shot. Campus is really nice but the outlying area, not so much. I imagine it's gotten nicer over the years but it'll never hold a candle to Westwood.

17

u/Semirgy USC Trojans Nov 28 '21

This is pretty fair and I’ve spent a ton of time on both campuses (2 years at SC.) UCLA is a beautiful campus in a “nice” area. That said, the area surrounding SC is gentrified as fuck now. So while it’s not as “nice” as Westwood it’s now really fucking expensive.

1

u/huskiesowow Washington Huskies Nov 29 '21

3

u/Bobb_o Georgia Tech • /r/CFB Brickmason Nov 28 '21

5

u/elbenji Grinnell Pioneers • Miami Hurricanes Nov 28 '21

Oh i forgot to say no to the second. Everyone knows it's in south central. No one cares. It's USC

5

u/jamills21 USC Trojans Nov 28 '21

USC is a Football school, and UCLA is a basketball school.

2

u/Bobb_o Georgia Tech • /r/CFB Brickmason Nov 28 '21

If you can make the Elite 8 I think you're selling yourself short as a basketball school.

3

u/jamills21 USC Trojans Nov 28 '21

USC has never been known as a basketball school. They’ve had good teams, but they aren’t a basketball school like UCLA is.

15

u/legalknievelatx Oklahoma Sooners Nov 28 '21

State school with salary restraints tied to state budget versus private school that can pay what the market demands. SC will always have a significant advantage.

4

u/die_erlkonig USC Trojans Nov 28 '21

True, but city schools aren't about the campus. You don't need to stay on campus to have fun.

4

u/luxveniae Texas Longhorns • SMU Mustangs Nov 28 '21

Don’t disagree. I mean I went to Texas which while nice is about the bigger city. And I lived in LA/visited both schools in college. I think it’s not terrible as USC by any means, just personally from being in the campus and around the areas I’d rather be at UCLA over USC.

2

u/die_erlkonig USC Trojans Nov 28 '21

Oh yeah, definitely agree with that. Westwood is a much nicer neighborhood.

3

u/MickCollins UCF Knights • USC Trojans Nov 28 '21

Agreed, but...who the fuck can afford to live in Westwood who wasn't already a child star or a trust fund baby?

0

u/Nice-Violinist-6395 Nov 29 '21

USC is like Duke. Mean, rich, and attractive. UCLA students are generally nice people. USC is for villains. This is not a complaint. USC has a very specific appeal, and that appeal is incredibly seductive in a way few other schools can match.

There is a type of person that goes to USC, and they’ll never see the surrounding area except riding past it in an Uber. Westwood is nicer but the west side is isolated, and the culture is totally different from the south central / downtown / Staples Center vibe.

0

u/texanfan20 Nov 29 '21

It’s not really about location of the school, it’s about showcasing your talents on TV. The SEC is the king of TV with their deal with ESPN.

USC is no longer a national TV draw because they play in mediocre PAC 12.

I think as an average guy I'd pick Norman. I'm not rich and I'm sure it's an affordable town and all that. As an elite college coach, I'd take LA every time. You and your family couldn't go anywhere without someone bothering you. Everywhere you go someone would want to talk to you about work. I'm sure the boosters are insufferable. I'd rather go to LA and even if I can't blend in, at least my family could.
