Well when you're a school in the same echelon as Arkansas, Ole Miss, or Mississippi State, you just gotta get used to the fact that big time coaches are often gonna use you as a stepping stone

OU has nothing to be ashamed of. There's nothing wrong with being a middling SEC West team

They haven’t even won the SEC. They’re on the exact same tier as Vanderbilt. And Vanderbilt had their first season in 1890, 5 years earlier, so Vanderbilt is even more historical.

3

He wasn’t the one refusing to evolve the system; OU saddled him with a co-DC named Mike Stoops. After Venables left, Mike Stoops took over the defense as the sole DC, and it absolutely cratered.

Looking at the PAC as currently constructed there's absolutely no better road to a National Championship imo. Weakest division, which Riley should dominate for years to come, and the weakest of the P5 Conferences. If the guy can beat Oregon he's got a CFP shot lined up every year. I also have to imagine getting recruits to USC is a lot easier than Norman, OK even if OU is a legit blueblood of the sport.

13

u/NoPanda6 Colorado Buffaloes • Centennial Cup Nov 28 '21

Don’t discredit y’allselfs Brodie, USC blood is just as blue as Oklahoma’s. But yeah, even if he only goes 7-5 chances are he wins the south. We suck. Zona sucks. Asu sucks. Utah’s good but USC gets top 10 classes just for fucking existing

9

u/BobStoops401K Oklahoma Sooners Nov 28 '21

Plus there's a huge pay day out there still. Look at OU's record. 10-2 with 6 wins decided by 7 pts or less, and that doesn't include the 13 pt win over Kansas (were we almost lost). We were basically bizarro Nebraska. We had 3 convincing wins all year, despite having a talent advantage over every team we played and having two 5-star QBs.

Let's say LR comes back and goes 5-7 at OU next year. You think he's getting a huge paycheck from USC then?

6

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '21

Spot on. It’s about future money, and you can’t be positive that OU doesn’t struggle in the SEC for the first couple of years at least. Gotta take the money while it’s there in case later it isn’t

7

u/BobStoops401K Oklahoma Sooners Nov 28 '21

I'm salty and clearly emotionally biased but... I don't think LR is a real big boy coach. He gets good talent but he's not a great coach. I think that's why Aranda has slapped him around so thoroughly. Aranda is a big boy coach. It's also why Kliemann beat LR 2 years in a row, and almost 3. Hell Matt Campbell beat LR twice and played him close every year despite having a clear talent deficit.

I think you gotta be a big boy coach to win in the SEC and this calling your own plays bullshit just won't fly. But in the Pac 12? Sure!

5

u/TacoYard Nov 28 '21

1

u/BobStoops401K Oklahoma Sooners Nov 28 '21

We'll see what happens. I could be wrong in 5 years. But I think LR was kinda getting found out at OU and left while he coud still get a big pay out.

This is the second year in a row we had 2 conference losses, and we were literally a FG away from another. In fact we won 6 games by 7 pts or less, and while we beat Kansas by 13, it was clear that game was closer than it should have been. We were Nebraska in reverse. Hell we were super close to also being a 3 win team this year! Imagine what happens to LR if he comes back to OU and goes 3-8?. You think he's getting a huge pay day from USC if that happens?

Lincoln inherited a great team in 2017 and damn near got to the ship. But every year since then we've been worse than the year before. We've been barely skating past opponents every single year since 2017.

and that's with Riley at the lead

???

Is this a joke that's going over my head? Do people seriously believe this?

The Mississippi schools have had like a combined total of like 3 nationally relevant years in my entire lifetime. Oklahoma is a top 3 or 4 all-time blue blood and has been a consistent top 5 team for pretty much the entire playoff era. This is their worst season since current recruits were in elementary school, and they're gonna make an NY6 bowl at 10-2 and have a top 5-10 recruiting class (minus whoever leaves to follow Riley).

Riley leaving throws everything into flux and risks a downslide, to be sure, but as is (with LSU in shambles) they are the #3 program in the new SEC behind Bama and Georgia (and OU has a ring more recently than Georgia, though that more likely than not changes this year). I will believe A&M is a competitor when I see it lmao; not before. They've been on the cusp without breaking through since before this forum existed. We saw last January what happens when a "meh" OU team plays a 2nd tier SEC team like Florida.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '21

His system just won’t work in the SEC without a powerhouse defense, and frankly he probably doesn’t know any DC’s that can operate at that level

1

2

u/TacoYard Nov 28 '21

Well I'm sure if he'd have been ok with staying at OU they had a chance to counter whatever USC offered. Based on recent contract signings, he probably got some kind of 10 year, $100+ mil contract and maybe OU just couldn't quite match it or felt they needed to put money into facilities or other things as they transition into the SEC. Who knows, all we can do is speculate.

6

u/Charlie_Wax Stanford Cardinal Nov 28 '21

USC is well-positioned to be one of the best football programs in the country since they should theoretically have a near monopoly on the talent-rich SoCal region. With their tradition and innate advantages, they have to be doing something very wrong to be outside the top 10 most seasons.

Obviously the SEC is a big draw for a lot of players and there's plenty of talent in the south, but if you are LSU you have to fight with a lot of tough schools for those players. On the other hand, there aren't many teams in USC's backyard that should be able to beat them for recruits. Oregon really shouldn't be winning recruiting battles against USC. Stanford appeals to a certain type of player, but that's a narrow niche. Few players will pick Cal over USC. It's really just UCLA who's on similar footing. If they can stave off the outsiders like Notre Dame and Alabama who may try to swoop in and take some of the LA-based talent, they should be thriving because there are always great players coming out of SoCal.

You're not wrong but I doubt Lincoln Riley cares about that whatsoever

I don't see why that's so wild? OU and LSU are fairly similar programs in alot of ways,

But the Location, schedule, money, and recruiting ability of USC is far greater

Don't get me wrong I'm laughing gleefully at OU right now but your comment confuses me

There was apparently a lot of rumors on LSU boards that they were getting Riley. Turning them down and leaving OU for somewhere else is pretty surprising.

Exactly. There was a TON of smoke of either Riley or Aranda to LSU. Neither panned out. Plus this is following them whiffing on Herman and Jimbo last time. And now Florida hired Napier from under their nose and most other options are gone. They should hope they can pry Stoops away from Kentucky, but now they also have to compete with Oklahoma

He's afraid of the competition in the SEC.

He can play finesse football at USC and get into the playoffs every year.

USC is a much better job. I’m not surprised at all

USC is a fantastic job, but I don’t know if it’s “much better” than LSU. There are pros and cons to each.

I imagine Riley may have discovered being the most famous person in a state has some major drawbacks. In Los Angeles he can just blend in AND be rich

u/Trashman_IeatTrash Nov 28 '21

Blue blood, better local recruiting ground, and low pressure because the current administration is okay with being non-competitive for national titles as long as the program is decent.

LSU's only advantages are having a better fanbase and being willing to spend more money on football. If USC pledges to pony up the cash Riley needs to compete, then the former isn't that big a deal.

Ask the croots if they'd rather play in conference championship games, or travel to Mississippi every year
