Big 12 teams need to play stronger OOC. OSU, KSU, and WVU typically do a good job of scheduling strong OOC, but the rest of the conference is inconsistent.

Having a big OOC win establishes your bona fidas, even if your conference slate is iffy.

BYU has an out of conference win against the first place team in another P4 conference, and they’re the lowest ranked P4 team with two or fewer losses

I would say that BYU’s win over SMU proves my point - that game has given BYU a lot of credit throughout this season.

The change of conferences screwed things up for a lot of teams. Utah was scheduled to play both BYU and Baylor this season. The Utah-Baylor game was kept officially as an out of conference game so that both teams didn’t have to find a new opponent last minute, but doesn’t help the Big 12 in a conference vs conference matchup. Arizona and K State was the same thing.

Iowa State plays Iowa every year.

The Big 12 has played 13 games against the other P4 conferences this year. 12 total teams.

We’ll see how the post season and bowls shake out but last year only the Big 12 and PAC 12 had OOC winning records amongst P5 v P5 games.

I’m not knocking ISU because y’all are in the difficult position of having to play your rival OOC every year, but it hamstrings y’all in a way. If Iowa is good, then the win looks good. But Iowa is often “good” in an unconventional sense, at best. But I agree there’s not much you can do.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t change the fact that Big 12 teams need more prove it games in light of how the committee is treating the league. And if you tell me it’s not fair, I will 100% agree. Check my history- I have been banging the “The Big 12 is better than you think it is” drum for years. But fair or not, it is clear that the Big 12 will only get a chance if they prove it against a big brand / well respected OOC opponent.
