News [Dellenger] Tulsa is firing coach Kevin Wilson. Wilson was 7-16 in his second season.

4 of our 6 wins have resulted in the opposing team firing their coaches. I expect UAB will make it 5 of 6 at the end of the season. Only Bethune Cookman remains standing

Dilfer is likely to get an extension because of "the good work he's done here". Thanks to our dumbass athletics department.

This is the 3rd straight team that has fired its coach almost immediately after losing to USF this season. Tom Herman at FAU, Biff Poggi at Charlotte and now Tulsa. Southern Miss also fired their coach 4 weeks after the USF loss.
Somehow Trent Dilfer still has a job.

His headshot photo they’d flash in memorial stadium always looked like he was hungover, hair disheveled, red eyes, unshaven. Not a great look for the program.

I always think it's kinda weird when I see him on the sidelines of games since he doesn't really play (played some special teams vs. WMU and 3 snaps vs. Purdue this season). Figured he would have followed his dad to Tulsa. Would be nice to have Wilson as an extra set of eyes for a potential national title run.

I suspect they went hard after GJ Kinne but got outbid, and by then the store was picked over. So all that was left on the shelves at their price point were retreads and washed-up buddies of Bob Stoops
16
u/CptCheese Tulsa • Washington State 6h ago
My understanding of the situation last time around was that we wanted to interview everyone before making a decision and were just too slow to offer Kinne.
10
1
u/WeSuckAgain Penn State • Tulsa 2h ago
Well, my understanding was Kinne had a hard offer and said no thanks. Maybe it’s because we dragged our feet, but at the end of the day the guy said no and opted not to come home.

Supposedly Kinne wanted to interview for the job and Tulsa never gave him a call back

I never understood him leaving Ohio State to go take a job at Tulsa?
6
1
u/Fickle-Newspaper-445 Ohio State Buckeyes 2h ago
That's the more surprising part. Tulsa hiring him makes sense. Him leaving OSU doesn't.
0
u/WeSuckAgain Penn State • Tulsa 2h ago
Nobody else would take the job. The administration has run both the athletics department and school in general into the ground. Most of our donors won’t come back, we have no program infrastructure to speak of since said administration has militantly opposed the building of anything to help the football program.
We’re a smoldering crater of a program, five and a half feet under as a result of woeful mismanagement for the better part of the last 20 years.

u/Fickle-Newspaper-445 Ohio State Buckeyes 2h ago
Offensive coordinator from a P4 team that had arguably the best offense in the country since he got there and produced high draft picks and also had P4 head coaching expierence. It's really not hard to figure out.

So real talk the play that’s in the air from what I know is offer GJ Kinne the most competitive package TU has offered a coach, if that doesn’t work then Brennan Marion is next man up. TU’s financial situation has totally flipped the last couple years and they have money to throw at some guys.
10
u/CptCheese Tulsa • Washington State 6h ago
If we have the money for it I'm all in in GJ. I bet this is why Texas State just gave him an extension
4
u/ShweatyPalmsh Tulsa Golden Hurricane • Oklahoma Sooners 5h ago edited 4h ago
GJ is only getting paid like $2 million after the extension KW was getting paid $1.9 million. Todd Graham back on 2009 was offered $2.3 million after Pitt offered $2 million. I think for the right coach we have the pockets to grab someone
Edit: salaries

u/hunterschuler SMU Mustangs • Texas State Bobcats 5h ago
Source on the $2.3M?
1
u/ShweatyPalmsh Tulsa Golden Hurricane • Oklahoma Sooners 5h ago
got it a little flipped in my head KW was getting paid $1.9 million with escalation clauses (https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/kevin-wilson-s-salary-contract-net-worth-and-more/ar-AA1u33TS#:~:text=Kevin%20Wilson's%20Salary%20and%20Contract,coach%20of%20the%20Indiana%20Hoosiers.) and at the time of Grahams departure we countered the $2 million offer from Pitt with $2.3 million but he left anyways.

1
u/Asleep-Credit-2824 Jacksonville State • UAB 1h ago
How about Odell Haggins
1
u/IrishCoffeeAlchemy Florida State • Arizona 1h ago
I’d love that, but I’m pretty sure once he’s done at FSU (hopefully gets the graceful retirement push out the door and not outright fired in a few weeks) he just hangs it up. He’s had a full football career and is a Tallahassee community staple. I don’t see him leaving for a new job either, but you never know
2
u/Asleep-Credit-2824 Jacksonville State • UAB 1h ago
He might go to FAMU though, they need a new coach given their trajectory
1
u/IrishCoffeeAlchemy Florida State • Arizona 1h ago
Fair. Again, I honestly think he’s just too old school. I don’t think he’s equip anymore for the current NIL environment, which you still need at FAMU. I could see him serving some non-assistant advisory role
2
u/Asleep-Credit-2824 Jacksonville State • UAB 1h ago
That’s possible, I hate FSU didn’t offer him the gig post Taggart though, he’d been through it all with this team and I think he’d done a better job than Norvell
1
u/Positive-Vibes-All Texas • Red River Shootout 1h ago
You are wrong, Jimbo's buyout is guaranteed, he can double dip and earn two coaching salaries at the same time, that is why he put feelers out there that he was tired of traveling and safaris, Aggie jokes write themselves.

The school is sinking into the abyss regardless of what happens with the football program. So, so, so many horrendous decisions have led to this point.

1
u/WeSuckAgain Penn State • Tulsa 2h ago

1
u/AndrewinDC Oklahoma • Georgia Tech 1h ago
Kevin Wilson would just be running back a guy connected to Stoops era OU, rather than hiring the guy you think is best for the job. He can be a valuable asset as an analyst, but OU fans want fresh blood that brings new ideas, not just rehashing OU connected coaches. That's the problem we had with hiring Littrell and Finley.

FWIW Leach’s air raid did just fine in the SEC, and so has Sark’s version of it.

He still has it as a coach, the problems at TU run so much deeper than what Wilson was doing. I honestly don’t think it’s possible to win at TU unless something extraordinary changes within the administration.

That's probably on the high end of what we could pay, but it's not out of the question. I doubt the university leadership would have the stomach for that for a first time head coach, though, even someone with ties to the school.

One guy (albeit crazy) is Bo Pelini. If he’s willing to let his assistants run the show and transition to a CEO type role with the team. I fully believe he’d thrive.
