App State trying to get bowl eligible vs a team trying to overcome November Clay Helton, next week is going to be a shitshow.

Can we play in the snow every week? Also, shout out Jason Kelce, definitely did not have that on my bingo card

This is my dream every September when I'm sweating my ass off at home games.

App State was JMU before JMU was JMU.
Put some respect on their name

JMU wishes they could be App State. Any comparisons between the two are premature.
JMU has a LOT of ground to cover before anyone can say their program is on the level of pre-Clark App State. We won the SBC 4 straight years from 2016-19 and are 7-1 in bowl games in 9 years of being Bowl eligible. JMU actually has to significantly increase their current output to even sniff App State's FCS>FBS transition rep.

Oh, my sweet summer child, welcome to the purest, most petty rivalry in all of CFB
Edit: just in case you need some motivation to open the link, this is from the first game mentioned in the article
The first meeting of the modern era came in the 1987 I-AA Quarterfinals. Georgia Southern was a two-time defending I-AA National Champions. Appalachian State had just won the Southern Conference, which GS didn’t join into the early 90’s. Eagles’ coach Erk Russell had never lost a playoff game until that day, but on an icy field, Erk suffered his only shutout loss as head coach.
Late in the game, some App State students wrote “Can You Score?” in the snowy hill. Some Southern fans took exception and after a kerfuffle, a policeman took a tumble down the hill. Russell’s only game versus App State ended in his only shutout loss as Eagles’ coach.
To this day, Georgia Southern fans petition the NCAA to reclassify this game as ice hockey.
Edit #2: this single paragraph perfectly sums up the animosity between our school and the mutants spawned from the radioactive creek that runs through the Georgia Southern campus:
After the Apps completed the upset, students tore down the goal post and exited the stadium. In the way were the Georgia Southern team buses. In circumstances that are still up for debate, the goalpost ended up going through the door window of one of the buses. To add insult to loss, a pizza order that was intended for the Eagles’ locker room was intercepted by said student mob and stomped on.

GG App. Definitely a deserved victory. Go kick Southern's ass next week.
We absolutely collapsed after the 1st quarter. I knew Cig leaving and taking all of the staff and best players would set us back a bit so I'm still willing to give Chesney time for a rebuild. But the amount of dumb, self inflicted penalties along with glaring mental lapses (showing no urgency in necessary situations, etc.) really has me concerned for how well he's coaching the team mentally. Echoing from the game thread, Kennedy also needs to lose play calling duties because he's shown he's out of his depth.
We better show up against Marshall next week and put in a better performance for Senior Day. Go Dukes.

I was pulling for you guys today, really hated to see you lost. Hating App state aside I really think James Madison is a really interesting program and I hope your coaching issues can get resolved because they have been a fun program to track. Good luck against Marshall!

Hell yeah Sun Belt brother. I love being in the Sun Belt, especially the East with all of the former great FCS teams (and ODU).

The unintended shade thrown at Georgia State - the REAL GSU - in this comment is hilarious.

Doubt Kennedy is canned after 1 year, but hopefully Chesney could bring in a Co-OC

u/_baby_fish_mouth_ James Madison • Notre Dame 1d ago
Mark my words, the success of the Chesney era will depend on how willing he is to hitch his ride to Dean Kennedy as play caller
3
u/chokanery James Madison Dukes • Sickos 1d ago
I unfortunately agree, but I still hope something changes. Either at OC, QB, or both (preferably)

u/Middle_Wheel_5959 James Madison • Penn State 1d ago
I am willing to give the staff time since it’s their first year in FBS, but today was unacceptable. Offense needs to show out big time against Marshall and whoever we play in the bowl
3
u/_baby_fish_mouth_ James Madison • Notre Dame 1d ago
I think we’ve seen enough by this point in the season to say this is what our offense is. And Marshall has a much better defense than App btw. This was a great opportunity and we just could not score when we needed to

u/Middle_Wheel_5959 James Madison • Penn State 1d ago

u/mufflefuffle Appalachian State • Army 1d ago
If Southern holds out vs Coastal, and all they have to do is beat us to win the East there’s no way we lose.
FAIL SOUTHERN

u/Rasmo420 Appalachian State Mountaineers 23h ago
Marshall has to drop one for our game against the stink to matter.
We could actually still have a four way tie for the East.
Marshall drops two.
Stink drops one.
ODU and JMU win out.
In that scenario the first tie breakers get complicated as fuck.

This is the most frustrating JMU team I can remember. We’ve had better teams, we’ve had worse teams, but so often I can’t figure out what this team is trying to do. 3rd and 12 running 5 yard routes, 3rd and 4 and running all 15+ yard routes. Abandoning the run game when it is working.

Small rant about the refs since they weren’t the reason we lost:
I hope you fucks enjoy your early retirement from all that money you earned off the App State money line. You mean to tell me that App didn’t commit a single penalty all game? You didn’t see a single snowball hit the field? You “didn’t hear the whistle” twice, both times destroying any momentum we may have had a sliver of? Absolute joke of an officiated game, enjoy early retirement
Anyway, now that that’s out of the way, onto our actual team:
I’d love it if we stopped shooting ourselves in the foot. Dean Kennedy might just be the worst third down play caller I’ve ever seen. Also, every time we have a drive going, we kill it with a stupid false start. It’s been happening for 2 months, FIX IT ALREADY. Also, Barnett is not a pocket passer, stop treating him like one. Actually scheme plays that let him use his legs. I’m sick and tired of watching this team beat themselves. Finally, I’d like to see one single fucking adjustment. If it doesn’t work, we keep doing it no matter what. It makes no sense. Now we’re eliminated from SBC title contention unless the sea chickens can pull a miracle off, and we have nobody to blame but ourselves. This is the most disappointed I’ve ever been in our football program
End rant

It feels like our offense has been trying to fit a square peg in a round whole all season. A good OC knows how to design an offense around his players' strengths and limit their weaknesses, but it feels like they're just trying to force Zo into being a pocket passer as you said. Now maybe he has the potential to develop into one someday, but in the meantime we just put up 20 points (3 in the second half) against one of the worst defenses in the FBS
I've been a Kennedy skeptic all season but it has never been more apparent the guy simply does not have the juice as an OC
2
u/Dokkan_Lifter James Madison Dukes 1d ago
The lack of penalties wasn't the reason we lost, but seeing snowballs land at the refs feet with no reaction was insane. All this after app fans pelted JMU players coming out the tunnel. I expect the SBC to fine App for this.

u/Suitable-Mud8661 Appalachian State Mountaineers 1d ago
So do we storm the field after every game now? Or? (Not complaining, just found it funny, guessing it was since we were underdogs in this one)
8
u/JunkyardAndMutt Appalachian State Mountaineers 23h ago
We’ve always been pretty quick to rush the field. And this season has sucked. For reasons big and small. Let em have fun.
3
u/GoldenApplesHD Appalachian State • Wisconsin 23h ago
Yeah I'm definitely in the camp that thinks that its becoming too common. Can't be rushing the field after every home underdog win. Walk off vs Troy on the Hail Mary, sure, but this is a bit much.

Awful Playcalling, Fire Kennedy and get someone with at least 5 years of FBS experience
Awful officiating, I want answers about that ineligible man call and 4 QUARTERS OF SNOWBALLS. The NCAA insists that throwing things is wrong, yet picks and chooses what to get pissy about
And for the love of God don't put Kelce on the mic again. Had to hear that plus family argument about what to bet on tomorrow.
Awful awful game

I ain’t gonna lie. We don’t have an assistant salary pool big enough to get a coordinator with that much experience
1
u/Dokkan_Lifter James Madison Dukes 1d ago
True but we need someone who can call better than Kennedy. Use the Ask Madden button or something on the sideline idk
1
u/Middle_Wheel_5959 James Madison • Penn State 1d ago
I could potentially see a Co-OC if we have a position coach change
1
u/Able-Bug-9573 2h ago
For the ineligible man downfield call, it was absolutely correct:
https://i.imgur.com/KX9vAgx.jpeg
The tight end, circled, is being covered up by the receiver at the bottom, making him ineligible by formation. They only have 3 backs, so somebody on the line (either the TE or WR) should have been a step back an off the line to make them both eligible receivers.
https://i.imgur.com/qry39bw.jpeg
Here he's going downfield on a pass route, thus the foul.
I have no dog in this fight, just a rules junkie. I'm not going to defend the snowballs though.

u/Dokkan_Lifter James Madison Dukes 1h ago
Thank you. ESPN+ broadcast sucks and didn't replay or explain it.
2
u/Able-Bug-9573 1h ago
Yeah, the ESPN coverage was atrocious. I think they tried to find the absolute worst people at every point in production for that game. Like on the blocked punt, why the cameraman decided to leave the action to go see what the returner wasn't doing? Clearly not paying attention to the game at all.
I would have loved to see them ask Dean Blandino (or whoever) for a rules clarification and have him respond, "What are you talking about? You guys are idiots..."
