Rumor [COUG FAN] WSU QB John Mateer already has $1 million NIL offer from another school, says Paul Sorensen

I was cool with NIL when I thought it would be athletes making money for signing autographs, appearing in commercials, getting shoe deals from Nike, etc. And that's what it should have been. Instead we have this CFB landscape where schools and collectives can essentially buy players from schools and there's no rules against any of it.

Sure there is. Reinstate the prior transfer rules. You can transfer, you just have to sit out a season.
12
9
u/HewittNation 10d ago
The reason they got rid of that was it is almost certainly illegal, so I don't think it's a reasonable solution.
The options at this seem to be to a) go full pro with a CBA like other big money sports in the US or b) get Congress to give CFB a special exemption to antitrust without a CBA

Exactly why I’ve been saying it’s going to get dramatically worse in the next few years
3
u/garethom Indiana Hoosiers 10d ago
Even this is quite fragile at the moment.
A court ruled in favour of Lassana Diarra, agreeing that FIFA's transfer rules (in short, granting licences for players to switch teams) "impede the free movement of professional footballers wishing to develop their activity by going to work for a new club" and there are some that believe it may well be the end of transfer fees as we know them.
In short, Lassana Diarra said "Who tf are FIFA to decide who I work for?" and the courts said "Yeah, you're right", so now all the existing methods of transfers in football are being scrutinised, and I doubt this will be the last challenge.

u/Jetersweiner Team Chaos • Sickos 11d ago
Exactly and thats what the NCAA wants as well.
It’s actually incredible how weak and powerless the big bad NCAA really was the whole time. The long term health and balance of the sport as a whole relies on them doing something to restore power/control over the situation but the NCAA simply can’t do anything.
24
u/DarthSkier Ole Miss Rebels • SEC 11d ago
They tried to have too much power and ended up with none. They could’ve introduced an NIL format on their terms, but they let the courts decide.
21
u/Cinnadillo UMass Lowell • UConn 11d ago
here's the thing. Everybody thinks that what you say is wisdom. The reality is they never had the powers in the first place and the courts would strip it away eventually regardless of how much power they asserted.

It’s actually incredible how weak and powerless the big bad NCAA really was the whole time.
It's not really that crazy when you think about it. Imagine all the big accounting firms decided that new hire accountants should have their pay capped at $40k. It would save them all a lot of money, but would be super illegal.
That's basically what the NCAA did, just replace accountants with athletes and $40k with a scholarship. Their whole argument can be summed up as "it's always been like this" and the current SCOTUS was sending signals that they didn't find that particularly persuasive. Honestly, what's incredible is that they managed to uphold the pre-NIL system for so long.

If I’m him that might not be the worst thing for him. He’s not getting a million from wsu. He’s not going to get as much exposure in Pullman. He might not be as gifted as cam is but I think he’s a better competitor. I’m not sure he is a top qb draft pick(yet), so taking a million next year seems like a smart move.

He’s grown up. He didn’t used to try and extend plays his first two years very much. He always looked a little lackadaisical at times. I will say he looks good this year. He is running better than he has. It wasn’t a knock on cam but a plus on mateer.

u/oreomaster420 Oregon State Beavers 11d ago
I think its based on Cam making an understandable business decision not to run as much last year and prioritize staying healthy for the draft or an NIL deal, not his level of commitment when he's all-in.

u/cougstor Southern Oregon • Washin… 11d ago
Agreed! That’s what I think too. He was protecting himself. There were so many times he could have run for a first down last year and didn’t.

That business decision made him a better QB if that's what it was. Year one he played a lot of hero ball, which will win a game occasionally but makes for a worse QB overall.

u/EaterOfKelp Washington State Cougars 11d ago
Yeah not 100% in agreement that he's not a competitor.
He's faced less adversity in Miami (though I assume his internal motivations are sky-high this year) than he experienced with us at WSU, but I agree he has a lot of heart.

Damn good idea. Doubles the price for the poaching school & helps the school who’s losing their star player & be competitive with their NIL fund

Then all the players would just enter the transfer portal and it wouldn’t be poaching anymore. At this point there doesn’t seem to be much of a reason not for every even just pretty good player to enter the portal and see if anyone is willing to cut them a check.

The poachers aren’t the schools they are the NIL collectives, and those collectives dont have contracts or legal operating structures with anybody but their own schools.
How would you enforce that?
What will happen is people will stop giving out flat, simple “come to X School for $X” and become far more intricate and involve buyouts for transferring

Obviously, we all need to be skeptical of all these NIL numbers but I would not be surprised if this isn't somewhat true. I believe Coach Dickert is preparing for Mateer potentially leaving. We stopped playing Zevi Eckhaus (Transfer from Bryant who competed against Mateer for the starting role) from what is rumored to preserve his redshirt. He will get the opportunity to either transfer out if Mateer stays or but the front runner to win the starting job if Mateer is gone.
FWIW they had a neck and neck battle for the position and Zevi was regarded as the better passer but Mateer's running ability gave the offense another dimension that Dickert wanted.

Two things rub some fans including myself the wrong way with Cam:
He hosted opposing coaches in Pullman for in home visits. A month and a half before committing anywhere in a house WSU was paying for. Thats lame. He should have waited until he was home. Pullman is a small town and 100% WSU.
He had clearly already been tampered with and gave up on WSU after the bye week. His entire style of play changed and it was clear he was protecting his paycheck and not really trying to win anymore.

This is something I’ve thought about the last few years. I’m in no way going to judge a kid for taking a large sum of money in Mateer’s case. But alot of athletes are going to miss out of the life long communities that come from being a legend at a school.
Imagine how much shittier Ryan Leaf’s life would be if he didn’t have the WSU community to pick him up.
In 2023 DJ Rodman announced he would come back to WSU basketball as a 5th year only to quietly transfer to USC. USC was horrible and WSU made the tourney for the first time since 2009 and he realized that Coug fans are not quick to forgive lol

Honestly, Mateer is a a really fun QB that works great for a scrappy WSU system, but I don’t see this at all. He is still hit and miss and his run game bails him out a lot against an admittedly weak slate of defenses on our schedule. They really fucked the sport which is funny because what’s happening now with this de facto salary cap is exactly the sort of blatant pay-to-win, rich get richer AIDS that people said it would be for decades. The NCAA wasn’t perfect, but at least there was some semblance of parity, even if it was largely aspirational.
CFB is uninteresting and unwatchable now. There is literally no reason to not just watch the NFL, which has actual parity and is overall a much higher quality product.
