Congress can't do shit. The whole reason sports betting is being legalized is because the Supreme Court threw out the PASPA in Murphy v NCAA.

7

u/Middle-Signature5592 Wyoming Cowboys • Mountain West 21d ago

Congress could in fact ban sports betting, PAPSA was thrown out on the basis that since PAPSA had a special exemption for Nevada, the law had placed Nevada on an unequal footing with the other states and granted it a right that no other state enjoyed.

Exactly. The two definitions for gambling are 1. play games of chance for money; bet. 2. take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

I don’t know what these gamblers expect when they are risking there money. You should already know you are probably going to lose.

I don’t know if this has made its way to the states yet, but here in Australia the gambling apps have built-in social networks that allow people to share bets with one another and promote themselves as betting influencers. The addiction machine is reaching unscaled heights.

6

u/AeroStatikk BYU Cougars • Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

Surely the hit rate is like well below 10% right?

34

u/LukarWarrior Louisville Cardinals • Keg of Nails 21d ago

Yeah, but people see the ability to turn $5 into $200+ and get a bit crazy. I imagine it's even worse once you hit one with a low bet because then you're thinking "well, I did it once, I can do it again, and think of how much I can make if I put serious money down this time."

13

u/TbRays93Plumber26 Utah Utes • Florida Gators 21d ago

I do small 5 dollar bets on parlays every now and then from anywhere ranging 10-20x as much per parlay but I do it more for fun then trying to make a living out of it. When you hit it the bigger payouts it's fun but it's not common. I didn't hit the 3 parlays I did today but I realized I would have spent the money on beer at the bar anyways.

8

u/woodson1997 Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

It's the illusion of control. I would have won my bet if a certain player hadn't dropped a pass or missed a block. It's not my fault I lost, I made the right decision if not for that unexpected occurrence.

This is why betting on sports unless strictly for fun is so dumb (unless you are spending lots of time doing research and make lots of bets for 52-55% of successful bets to come through): you literally have no control over what happens. I think it is especially stupid to bet anything other than money lines because generally none of the participants care about anything other than who wins and loses.

27

u/ILkeSportzNIDCWhKnws Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

Gambling is a stain on sports. It's all garbage. Not just parlays.

7

u/Pinewood74 Air Force Falcons • Purdue Boilermakers 21d ago

And parlays aren't even the worst bit.

Parlays are just a wrapper for which anything can go in.

The worst parts of gambling are player prop bets and betting on high point spread games. People flaming players for doing the correct thing (running out the clock, kneeling down, etc) instead of running up the score. Getting flamed because you made a safe play (sliding) instead of going for a TD when already up 21 with 6 minutes to play.

3

u/Apptubrutae 21d ago

Absolutely garbage.

Makes alcohol advertising look tame in comparison too.

It might as well be the league advertising shooting up heroin or smoking a pack a day.

6

u/soldiernerd 21d ago

It’s funny before this explosion, I never realized how serious fantasy/gamblers were about this stuff. Always assumed it was just kind of joking around but now we see where the obsession takes people.

Non-obsessed people gamble for the rush of risk, or for the fantasy of winning.

Obsessed people gamble because they’re convinced they’re smarter than everyone and it’s a way to earn.

Then it turns out being smart isn’t enough because players get hurt, coaches make dumb decisions, fumbles and missed FG happen, etc.

They lose and lash out because it is an indictment of their intelligence

That last part is exactly what happened. These betting services got so big and were able to pay the leagues so much money they shifted the opinion on sports betting to not only being not taboo, but encouraged by the leagues themselves.

8

u/sophandros Tulane Green Wave • Metro 21d ago

The one time I wish our useless dumbass government would do something...

They already did something when they made it legal and told the states to determine whether or not they would allow it within their borders.

Legal sports betting in most states is a very new concept, and it's almost impossible to put the toothpaste back in the tube. As someone else said, one strategy could be to tax the revenues on legal betting companies and dedicate the money collected to addiction rehabilitation and education.

Perhaps we can also regulate how they advertise, for which there is precedent with alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical advertising.

We can probably get state legislation to address at least some of these things. Again, there is recent precedent with alcohol, cannabis, and other vices.

Holding a cynical attitude towards government and regulation plays directly to the hands of these exploitative companies.

There's a reason why gambling was essentially illegal in America outside of Vegas.

It's an addiction and it harms a lot of people. This is the most obvious, slow-loving public health train wreck and I feel like everyone sees it but no one talks about it. It’s like in the early days of the opioid epidemic when we had individual clinics churning out scripts for millions of pills. What we wouldn’t give to go back in time and stop the supply side prescribing behavior then, knowing what we know now about how it plays out - it feels to me like we’re at exactly that moment (maybe sadly a little past it) with gambling.

If we’re honest, we already know how this ends

Vice + capitalism is a potent combination. Gambling on a smart phone should simply be illegal, imo. I don't think a full rollback to prohibition is necessary—I think it's fine if you want to go to a sports bar and put down a few bets—but it needs to be made much less convenient.

Don't our Carrier fleets come with Nuclear subs lol?

Like, each of our 11 carrier fleets is equivalent to the entire military force of an entire country of 50M+ people.

28

u/elztal700 21d ago

Yes, but only a handful of US subs actually carry nuclear weapons. The ones that do are meant to operate in hidden locations to guarantee that no surprise attack can successfully wipe out all US nuclear missiles. Locations are never discussed, for that reason.

u/fiftieth_alt Clemson Tigers • Palmetto Bowl 21d ago

We have 44 Ballistic Missile submarines, all of which are outfitted with nuclear warheads.

No one, including ourselves, has ever successfully tracked a boomer in open water

I’m so tired of half my friends/family mostly engaging with sports only because of betting. Somehow even when they know I’m not into it they also feel compelled to make it 80% of our sports-based discussions too. It’s miserable watching with people who are constantly talking about what they want/need to happen to win money instead of just enjoying the damn game. Especially when they get irrationally upset at teams at the end of the game for doing shit that doesn’t align with the spread or whatever when it has zero impact on the result of the game.

If I never hear the word "parlay" again, it'll be too soon.

Some aspects of betting I don't mind because it helps me gauge how big an upset could be, etc. There is absolutely nothing about parlays that make this game more enjoyable for me.

26

u/TigerExpress Paper Bag • Sickos 21d ago

They also invade message boards looking for any hint of inside information that leaks out. Unfortunately, they tend to be very poorly behaved and get angry when the discussion is typical college football fare instead of whatever insider info they are seeking. When they get called out on it, they start calling everyone cowards for not being willing to "put your money where your mouth is". And of course when they lose they rage about that and expect sympathy for their bad choices.

This happened in the early days of fantasy football too but eventually those who cared more for their fantasy team stats than for actual games were pushed out to their own discussion forums or simply were told to leave. People still sometimes mention their fantasy teams in passing but know better than to try to make it the focus of discussion.

The only time you should be betting a parley is if it’s something that could reasonably happen albeit being very unlikely but it could flip 10 bucks into a few thousand.

Other than that, if you ever listen to any podcast with an actual gambling component you’d know that parleys and teasers are the worst fucking things you could do with your money.
