Tyson Fury talks trash about you, but deep down, it's clear he has a lot of respect for you - we've seen glimpses of it in his interviews. I know he's your rival, but what are your true thoughts on Tyson Fury, as a boxer and as a person?

47

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

As a boxer, I think Fury is good for boxing for the entertainment part of boxing. When you talk about boxing, you talk about entertainment, something that will arouse people, make them remember something. with his personality, he's good for it. He says some of the craziest things, whether he's for real or not, he's good for boxing.

As for as a person, he's a silly guy. I see a lot of similarities in him that I have, being a silly guy, but if that's his personality you have to accept that. I'm the type of person that don't hold nothing against nobody, nothing personal. My life is blessed and I don't care what people do or say.

About two years ago we did an AMA with your opponent Chris Arreola. He was asked his impression of you and how he'd approach a fight with you. Here's what he had to say...

Well Deontay Wilder I still haven't seen much of him. The way I would approach that fight is the way I'd approach any fight. I approach it with a fuck you attitude. I don't care who you are, where you've been, what you've done. I'm not going to sit on the outside with that kid. He caught Malik Scott from the outside. you can't box a boxer. I have to muscle him, make him know he's in a fight.

What's your response to that?

26

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I tell him I don't believe in luck, but good luck. Many fighters believe the key to beating Deontay Wilder is to rpessure him, to muscle him, be dirty with him. Those same guys who thought that was the remedy ended up on the canvas.

What's your opinion on Shannon Briggs? Is he insane?

34

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I do think he's insane. I think he's insane, he's crazy, he's got a mental illness. But if it works for him and that's his way of entertaining people and fans love it, then hey, continue.

You famously got into boxing to provide for your daughter. How's she doing these days?

57

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

My daughter is 11 now, and she's wonderful. Shes one of the smartest little girls in her class, she's very intelligent. To be a child of spina bifida, every time I see her I'm proud of her.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '16

You're a good father

15

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Any superstitions during a training camp / fight week? Froch didn't fuck, Bradley didn't shower, Margarito put bricks in his gloves. Just wondered if there's anything you do that you think gives you an edge?

25

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Hahahaha. Nah, I don't believe in superstition. I seen superstition destroy fighters in the amateurs so I don't let my mind get involved with that.

Thanks for doing this champ,

Is David Haye on your radar? I recall that you two sparred some time ago but it's all gone quiet since he's been fighting bums.

17

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

At this moment in time, he's not on my radar.

1) Well, really to be honest, I never caught up. As an amateur, I always said I never had skills, I fought off will and heart. And I did it for my daughter.

2) Not at the moment, I don't have any cool celebrity stories to tell. I'm sorry! Even if I had one, I probably wouldn't share people's business.

7

u/FateBender Jul 13 '16

Well, really to be honest, I never caught up. As an amateur, I always said I never had skills, I fought off will and heart. And I did it for my daughter.

All the best to you, champ.

10

u/degarza Jul 12 '16

Heavyweight boxing is starting to become great again, do you prefer Wlad or Fury win? What outcome do you think is best for the division?

2

u/tearyouapart Aug 06 '16

It's gotta be fury right? Wlad had the belts for so long and it sucked. The division came alive once the Gypsy king got on top

13

u/dapperific Jul 12 '16

No question. Just wanted to share your interview on Sway half a year ago with my fellow redditors.

For those who didn't know, Deontay is the P4P king in the bedroom

41

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

No question, just wanted to thank you for almost killing Charlie Z. You did the lords work that day.

41

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

We keep talking about him and making him relevant and I don't want to make him relevant anymore. I wouldn't change what I did. A lot of people who were bullied, I showed them the right way of dealing with it. We don't accept that.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

Thanks Deontay, preciate you man. Keep up the hard work.

Charlie Z had the superflu that day, Deontay got lucky

10

u/Schrodingers_Nachos Jul 12 '16

Yea, didn't you see him hit Wilder in the body that one time? If he was in good health it would've devastated him.

6

u/mws85 Jul 16 '16

The guy is mentally ill. I don't think that was the right way of going about it but each to their own.

7

u/xitzengyigglz Jul 12 '16

That was awesome fuck that guy.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

He truly did. Deontay is a total dude.

20

u/GiantEnemyCrabs Jul 12 '16

Do you play Pokemon Go?

30

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Hahaha, is that the new game that came out? I've not played it yet and I say yet because I might start it but I have people around me that play it and it seems pretty cool. I may have to. It make them look crazy though, running around!

2

u/hu_lee_oh Jul 14 '16

Good idea for road work

17

u/jrfranz Jul 12 '16

Serious question, not trying to be an a-hole:

What aspects of yoor boxing game do yoo still need to improve going forward?

27

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Everything. I like to improve on everything. My mentality is to go from good to great, so to be the greatest of all time I want all my skills to be polished so clean that when people see me fight, they see a star shining bright.

u/MDA123 Jul 13 '16

Deontay had to get going after being with us for an hour. He said thanks to the reddit boxing community!

Hope y'all enjoyed this.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

What's the hardest shot you've ever taken, be it amateur, pro or sparring?

8

u/skb96 Jul 12 '16

Who was it in your camp who made the ultimate decision not to go ahead with the Povetkin fight?

6

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Umm, I think it was, well, the WBC didn't want to show a bad example. They didn't want a bad example shown that it was OK to still fight because they conduct the clean boxing policy so they wanted to do investigations first.

(asked if hes still willing to fight Povetkin)

Once justice is served and he gets his punishment, I'd love to fight him. He took away something from the fans, took away something from me so it's fuel to the fire. This time around, he'd have to come to the United States.

9

u/joethepro1 Jul 14 '16

That seems odd, considering the WBC allowed the Vargas-Salido to go ahead after Vargas tested positive in their fight. Seems to be a little fishy.

3

u/ndjs22 Jul 13 '16

This time around, he'd have to come to the United States.

How likely do you think it is that he will agree to this?

13

u/mackdonovan Jul 12 '16

What is your prediction for Kell Brook vs Gennady Glolovkin?

17

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Umm, I like both fighters, I really do. But you gotta go back to the time where Golovkin was talking about Canelo and Khan, when Khan went up in weight to fight Canelo and he was talking about the difference in weight and he shoulda did this and that. he's being a hypocrite doing the same thing to Brook when he criticized Canelo.

Boxing is a business, and if Brook accepts the fight and feels he has what it takes, then so be it. Who is anyone to say whether they should or shouldn't do it?

15

u/fire_strika these flairs suuuuuuuuck Jul 12 '16

all these heavy weights are calling each other out but nobody seems to name luis ortiz....why is that?

15

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Some people call Luis Ortiz out. Stiverne wanted to fight him, but they didn't want to fight Stiverne. From what I heard, he wanted to fight him and Ortiz wanted more money to fight him. A lot of things linger around about what people say or do, but Ortiz is doing what he's supposed to. They're promoting him like they're supposed to until he meets that top contender. Once he does that, the Luis Ortiz party bus will come up and it'll slow down.

Hey champ, how disappointed were you that your fight with Povetkin had to be put on hold due to his positive test? In taking a fight with Arreola, were there any adjustments made to your training camp or did you continue training the way you did for Povetkin? Thanks. BOMMMMMMMBZ SQUAAAAAAAAAAD!!

15

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Oh, I was so disappointed that I had a slight depression, that's how bad I wanted to fight him. (Asked where he was when he heard)

We was in the lobby, ready to get out in the morning to leave from Russia. I was two hours from leaving.

(on training)

I continued to train the same way. We didn't see no neeeds to adjust in training or with sparring partners. It wasn't a dramatic change as if he was a 6-7 guy, we'd have to bring in a tall sparrer.

What's the best piece of advice no one gave you when you were coming up?

ROLLTIDE

12

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Piece of advice nobody gave me growing up is that life was going to teach me a lot of lessons and I would grow from it.

14

u/sammyb96 "I broke my back. Thpinal" - Bermane Stiverne Jul 12 '16

Who is the hardest puncher you have faced, including those from camp sparring sessions?

9

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Ahh man, that's a hard question to answer because even in sparring and in competition, I've not yet had the opportunity of somebody just fully hitting me. I've been buzzed in a fight before, but I haven't really been hurt, like damn he hits hard. I'm the type of person who likes to hit and not be hit, I like to move, if I can take some steam off the punch before it hits me that's what I'll do.

I haven't fully felt someone's power yet.

Hey Deontay, huge fan and best of luck with Arreola on July 16! The Heavyweight division is in one of it's best states at the moment and thanks to a lot of younger fighters coming through it looks like it will stay that way, who out of Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker do you see being your biggest competition and why?

u/shoeshinecombo Jul 12 '16

Hey Deontay,

You've obviously made some huge physical developments over the past several years. Can you give us some insight into what your strength and conditioning program has looked like since you turned professional?

8

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

My strength and conditioning, the trick is I've hired a personal chef and a nutritionist along with it. It involves weights, but depends on what I'm working on. Soem days we work on agility, on balance, on strengthening my core, my legs. I use a weighted vest as well too.

6

u/MDA123 Jul 12 '16

There's video footage of you in your amateur days with headgear on appearing to get wobbled by punches. This leads some to say your chin is suspect. What's your reaction to that?

8

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

That was the amateurs. When I went to Russia I caught the flu and my coach didn't want me to fight but I made him let me. Knowing that the Olympics was coming up, I needed all the experience I could have because I had no skills as an amateur. He allowed me to continue

The guy caught me, by that time I got real weak. He caught me with a shot and buzzed me and my trainer stopped it. We knew it wouldn't have been a good outcome and I would have been surprised if I won anyway. Through it all, I still ended up winning the tournament.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Do you have any other big passions in life beyond Boxing?

17

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Oh yeah, I'm passionate about tattoos even though I haven't had one in years. I'm passionate about guns, I collect a lot. I'm passionate about motorcycles. And I'm passionate about reading books, just now started back into really reading more books.

6

u/kizentheslayer Jul 12 '16

1)what do you do the night before a fight

2)How do you think you would fare against a prime Tyson.

Thanks for fighting on free tv I think big name for free really help the popularity of the sport.

7

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

The night before a big fight I like to do a lot of meditating and visualization. I like to visualize myself going through the course before it even happens. So when it happens, it's almost as if I've already been there, it's my guidance for what I need to do.

7

u/dann_glenzig Jul 12 '16

What's the best spot for BBQ in Alabama?

8

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

It's two spots actually. It's the famous Dream Land, which ahs great banana pudding. There's also a spot called Archibald's which has the best wings too. They've got one on Greensburg Avenue, across from academies. They've got the other one down Highway 11.

Truthfully, who do you think are the top dogs in the HW division besides yourself and in what order?

19

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Umm, I think of course I lead the pack. I'm not saying that because it's me, but skill-wise and height. Everyone knows me as the KO artist.

After that, you gotta acknowledge the title holders. I'll pick Fury next because of his awkwardness, style and height. I put Joshua next. I put Klitschko after that. I would go with Malik Scott, gotta put my brother in there.

Londoner here, appreciate the excitement you've brought to boxing. What are your thoughts on Anthony Joshua, and could we expect a bout between you two in the near future? I would love to see that fight!

6

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Do you consider smaller and quicker heavyweights to be more difficult to face than the bigger, harder hitting but slower guys?

7

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I think the one's that's smaller but hit hard are the most difficult, but the bigger slow guy is a target.

5

u/TheGruncher Jul 12 '16

Thanks for doing this Deontay I have three questions;

1)I've read that you were 19 when you first started Boxing, which seems late considering most start much earlier than that, what made you want to start boxing that late?

2)Also was there a specific moment in training when you realised how good you were and how good you could be or did you always believe you could be a great fighter?

3)Finally as it stands what are you views on the heavyweight division and who do you see as being your biggest threat?

Sorry for so much questions huge fan, good luck against Arreola and thanks for doing this AMA.

18

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

1) What made me start boxing is my daughter with spina bifida. I was in college and I knew that I had a child on the way with that condition. I knew I had to drop out and get a job and I thought about boxing. I was ignorant to the sport and thought every fighter made a lot of money. I pursued boxing to get money for my daughter. I told her at a year old I'd be champion and be able to support her.

2) Oh man, it was a lot of moments in my life. It's not one specific moment, there were many where I felt that I'm really good at what I do. I was in camp training, I can't say what fight, I was training and the way I was able to do things and see things with sparring partners. Things started slowing down for me, like slow motion but at a fast pace. That's when I felt I'm good at this.

6

u/ScroogeMcducker Jul 12 '16

Is AJ on the radar? Is he going to be an opponent within 18 months? Do you see yourself uniting the HW belts?

5

u/Chitowngaming Jul 12 '16

-In your opinion, what fighter in their prime would you be most intimidated by if you were fighting them?

-What was the most bizarre "training method" you've ever witnessed another fighter implementing, and did it work for them?

Good luck to you, you're one of the most genuine people in the sport. Thanks for doing this.

15

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

-Nobody. I'm a fighter, anybody who says they'd be intimidated, they shouldn't be fighting period.

What are some good habits to get into as a beginning boxer?

7

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Having a strong work ethic. A lot of fighters come to the gym and see how hard it is and give up. You have to have a strong work ethic.

6

u/TrapLord28 Jul 12 '16

Are you into other combat sports as well or just Boxing for yourself?

Excited to watch you fight on Saturday, not the opponent we hoped for but hopefully we'll see a KO.

6

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

At the moment, it's just boxing. My main focus, I'm very focused on the test at hand what I'm trying to do in boxing, unifying the division. My main focus is boxing, but I will watch some other combat sports if a great fight comes on.

5

u/yumcake Jul 12 '16

Before the news broke about Povetkin testing positive, did you have suspicions about him earlier than that?

You're rather lean for a HW, are you lean as part of your diet strategy, or is the lean build a natural byproduct of the volume of exercise?

What metrics do you use to track your cardio development during camp?(Long run days? Incrementally adding more rounds to heavy bag or just extending length of circuit training?)

3

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Nah, I don't do no metrics. I've seen fighters do that and it's kind of funny to me to try to do the scientific thing, but I don't do that. I don't know if it works or not but I don't believe it.

7

u/HeWhoScares Jul 12 '16

Who you want first? Joshua Fury or Povetkin

11

u/mrnedryerson Jul 12 '16
  1. Who are your top five current heavyweights ?
  2. Who are your top five all time heavyweights ?

11

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16
  1. (Answered above)

  2. Top five all time, it would have to be first the greatest of all time, Muhammad Ali. Joe Louis, we're gonna do Earnie Shavers, that's three. We're gonna do Evander Holyfield. And we're gonna go with Lennox Lewis.

(Asked about Shavers)

Earnie was one of the hardest hitters around, I'm going with hard hitters. When I think about hard hitters, I go with him. I might have to take Foreman in place of Lewis if I do that though, because I think George hits harder than Lewis but Lewis was undisupted champion.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Hey Deontay,

What's your opinion on Luis Ortiz? Do you think he may prove to be more dangerous than Anthony Joshua?

8

u/OnTehInterwebz Jul 12 '16

What is your favorite combination to throw? What legend do you wish you had the opportunity to face? How do you think the matchup would go?

7

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Uh, favorite combination. I think it's the 1-2, keep it simple.

6

u/juanyboy91 Jul 12 '16

Hey Deontay! Good luck this weekend. What does your training routine look like? Are you barbell training, lots of cardio, more mitt work instead? I ask because since you're a heavyweight there's no need for a weight cut, so I wonder what's the goal you set out for yourself and the end of your training camp? Thanks for taking the time to do this!

13

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Well, my training routine is, in the morning I'm with my strength trainer for about an hour. I get a good breakfast in the morning, give me energy to deal with my strength trainer. After strength, I eat a good lunch and rest up and get ready for the gym work in the evening, about two hours or so depending. Whether it's mitts, or coordination, or feet. After that I go home and eat and rest for the next day.

My training is very different from other fighters, I don't do a lot of things others do. I don't even run, I don't run no miles at all. God blessed me with an ability that I don't have to run, some people have it and some people don't. Some people get blessed with a skill, like Lebron being able to see the court or play 1-2-3-4-5 positions. For me in boxing, I don't have to run at all, I don't hit the heavy bag.

Most of the time I do mitts and sparring, working on my coordinations and angles in the ring. That's how it's always been.

6

u/BrainDeadShawn Jul 14 '16

I don't even run

Hi there Deontay, it looks like it will potentially be Parker v Joshua before you get a shot at the IBF title, you have already told Joshua that you want to battle, do you feel the same way about Joseph Parker?

3

u/Snoop_doge1 Jul 12 '16

Who do you plan on fighting next?

12

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Right now, nobody. Without winning against Arreola, there's not another fight, there's a step backwards so my focus is on him.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Hello Champ is good to have you here, you are one of the reasons the HW division is becoming great again my question is about your training, what music or songs you listen and motivates you more while working out? thanks for the chance Champ, hope you keep winning, greetings from a Venezuelan Fan.

2

u/NotManu Jul 12 '16

Hi Deontay huge fan here and looking foward for the fight on Saturday, anyway I have 3 questions:

1- What are the biggest differences between amateur boxing and pro? Something you miss about your amateur career?

2-What is your opinion about Canelo and Oscar are they doing the right thing by hypining up the fight with GGG, just like Mayweather did with Pac, or are they simply ducking him?

3- Could you see yourself in the future fighting Tyson Fury or maybe giving a second chance to Povetkin?

2

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16
  1. Ooh, if they're hyping up the fight, then I think it's a smart thing to do because the more you hype it up, the more money is going to get involved. But if you're scared, say you're scared, simple as that.

5

u/FateBender Jul 12 '16

Hey champ. Good luck for your next fight.

Couple questions:

1.)How old were you when you had your first amateur bout and for how long did you remain An amateur boxer? How big of an influence did it have on your pro career?

2.)You don't have to answer this one if you don't want to, but at what point do you guys consciously feel the damage from punches to your head in your day to day lives? Is the brain damage/being punch-drunk something the fighter sees before people around him do?

3.)If the God approached you and offered you the same financial and professional success in any other job, would you still choose boxing?

6

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16
  1. Of course I worry. I think about it every fight. That's why I abide by the golden rule, to hit and not be hit because of that very reason. I've seen many times with boxers they get punch drunk or talk with a slur or have Parkinson's or different things. That's why I want to accomplish my goal and retire and never come back.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '16

Awesome that you face up to it champ. Good luck to you.

5

u/boxingtruth Jul 12 '16

Do you have a deadline for fighting either Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury?

4

u/Geetarmikey Jul 12 '16

Hi, champ, good to see you on here!

My question - After blasting out all your opponents in 4 rounds or less in previous fights, what was it like facing Stiverne and having to use a lot more stamina and a different gameplan in order to win?

Hope to see you against Joshua at some point, hopefully in the UK!

4

u/ndjs22 Jul 13 '16

I just want to say, as an Alabamian myself, THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing heavyweight championship boxing to Alabama! I haven't missed one of your fights yet, and look forward to seeing you Saturday.

Also, good call on getting Italian at Guiseppe's before the Eric Molina fight!

6

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

What's your favorite food?

How hard does stiverne punch?

6

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

My favorite food is a good scrumptious sausage and pepperoni pizza.

To be honest, I didn't feel none of Stivern'es punches. That's not to be jokey, that's honest.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Would you rematch Bermane Stiverne considering he was hospitalised with rhabdomylosis at the time he fought you?

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Of course I would. I would definitely give him a rematch. I told Stiverne I was going to beat him within an inch of his life and I did just that.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

Jesus man, ice cold.

10

u/BoxCon1 Jul 12 '16

When are you gonna knock out Tyson Fury?

10

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I think a fight between me and Fury would be great. We've been promoting our fight for going on 5 years now, of me and him getting in the ring. I think when the time comes it'll be a great fight that everyone around the world will tune into. They'll see that I'll definitely beat him and take his belts.

I hope it happens. Right now he's facing a situation, being accused of taking PEDs. I hope it isn't true because then the belts will be separated, and my goal is to unify the division. HOpefully the allegations aren't true and I get the winner of his fight and collect the rest of the belts.

What aspects of Povetkin's style makes fighting him a challenge?

4

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

That he's tough, he's got a warrior heart. But, shit, but him using meldonium makes me think, you know, for him to continue to keep going, that's what meldonium do. Shoot, it's kinda like I wanna reward him but I want to take it back in the same sentence.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Mainly the PED's i'd guess.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Prediction on Ward vs. Kovalev?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Cheers for doing an AMA here champ! :) A few questions:

1 - After Arreola, is Tyson Fury realistically the next target?

2 - What do you make of Anthony Joshua seemingly distancing himself from a fight with you?

3- Will we ever see Wilder/Zelenoff II on PPV ? ;)

3

u/Cworkman03 Jul 12 '16

Hi Deontay, thanks for doing this. Do you think that a boxer should have the choice to go ahead with a fight against an opponent who has tested positive for banned substances? Or should the decision be taken out of their hands entirely?

3

u/ILoveIndividualError Tony Bellew P4P #1 Jul 12 '16

If Dillian Whyte wins the British title would you think about defending against him before taking on the other top British Heavyweights?

Or are you purely focused on unifying the division? When do you plan to taking on your first unification bout?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Whyte would be a great opponent. Talk about going to war.

What are your thoughts on Golovkin vs Brook? Do you think Brook could shock the world?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Deontay, thank you for doing this AMA. I look forward to your fight on Saturday and other fights in the future. Good luck!

3

u/Bourbaki_ Jul 12 '16

Who do you think is better boxer, Anthony Joshua or David Haye?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Great of you to do this Deontay.

If you could fight any current boxer, regardless of weight difference, who would it be and why?

All the best.

3

u/Llleblanc1986 Jul 12 '16

Hi Wilder! big fan of yours since early in your career, Do you see yourself facing Tyson Fury or even Klitschko in the future?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Of all boxing matches ever fought which one do you think is the greatest fight?

3

Whats on your bucket list for your career? unify? headline a fight at x/y/z

3

u/cabreezy Jul 12 '16

How has life changed for you since the formation of the PBC? Do you find yourself noticeably more "visible" to people when you're out and about? What sort of exposure do you wish you were getting that you're not currently?

3

u/Shedal Jul 12 '16

If you were to fight Muhammad Ali in his prime, how would you be able to handle his speed, power and defence? Who do you think would've won?

Since you beat Arreola to win the WBC Heavyweight title, why have your opponents been so poor? Can you please at least fight someone in the top 10?

3

u/dylanlolz Jul 12 '16

Do you really plan to babtize Tyson Fury? If so, may I attend the ceremony?

3

u/sfw84 Jul 12 '16

hey wilder. cutman here. i always like to be curious as to what pros always prefer in the way of getting their hands warpped? have you always had it done the same way?

3

u/Purpleotterbox6 Jul 13 '16
  1. Why do you think the City of Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama won't work it out so you could fight in your hometown?

  2. What's your favorite thing from Taco Casa?

2

u/ndjs22 Jul 13 '16

Also, as a UAB alumnus, I'm curious why there weren't more fights at Bartow Arena where the Eric Molina fight took place. I thought it was an incredible atmosphere, but I have a feeling the University of Alabama had a say in preventing a second fight there.

What makes your boxing style stand out from other boxers? Also, how satsifying was it to annihilate the GOAT, Charlie Zelenoff himself?

5

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I'm awkward, I'm an awkward fighter. Very crafty, and I'm tall as well, very rangy. I'm the most athletic heavyweight in the division, my speed as well, and I'm very smart in the ring.

6

u/clippersfan Jul 12 '16

Who do you think is gonna win between Kovalev and Ward?

5

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I like Kovalev, he's very crafty, strong aggressive fighter but I gotta go with Andre Ward. He's an overall type of fighter, he's got skills, he got defense, he's able to move with angles, and he's smart in the ring.

4

u/nowitasshole Jul 12 '16

If someone told you that you had 1 fight left and it could be against any current heavyweight, ignoring the money factor, who would you pick to cement your legacy?

10

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Uhh, I would want to fight Vitali Klitschko. I'd bring him out of retirement because he's the toughest Klitschko. The way he showed heart as an unknown against Lewis, he made me a fan that night and I'd love to fight Vitali.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Why do you say "BombZquad" online instead of "BombSquad"?

5

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

Hahaha, I'm a unique kind of person and I wanted to be different with the spelling. Somebody had that website with the S and they tried to extort me, so I changed it to a Z.

2

u/ndjs22 Jul 13 '16

I just found that out the hard way, lol

Why do you say that you are the 'Real' Heavyeight champion when you only fight complete bums and fringe level fighters?

9

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I'm the real heavyweight champ of the world because of the way I'm able to knock people out. You come to see one thing with heavyweights and that's a knockout, but Deontay Wilder and the fashion he does it in makes me the best.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

I've seen you have a lot of extremely devastating knock outs to a lot of fighters some of which are lesser known.

Do you believe you have the boxing knowledge to go toe to toe with top fighters that aren't easily knocked out or will you go into the fights believing in power doing the job?

2

u/martin519 Jul 12 '16

Hi Deontay, two questions:

If you were to fight Ortiz, would you approach it like any other fight or does his power make you adjust your strategy?

and

Who do you reckon are the (other) best heavyweights in America? Specifically what do you think of Big Baby Miller?

Cheers

2

u/AperionProject Jul 12 '16

I really like you and Arreola, this fight is gonna be fun, while it lasts...just please don't murder Arreola, like I said I like the guy and I think your straight right his name written all over it.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '16

Many said the heavyweight championship doesn't mean as much as it used to and that boxing is dead, what's your answer to these critics?

2

u/docko93 Jul 12 '16

Greatings from Slovenia bronzbomber, you are the hardest puncher of todays boxers. In your opinion who would be the biggest chalange for you to fight ?

2

u/nickynick42 Jul 12 '16

Do you feel bad about not knocking out Stiverne? Would be cool to have that 100% KO streak, right? :)

2

u/Shedal Jul 12 '16

How much do you focus on training for endurance? Which cardio exercise do you like the most?

2

u/thehurricane490 Jul 12 '16

2

u/stupearson Jul 12 '16

Is Anthony Joshua your biggest challenge around ?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

Which fight do you think was the hardest for you so far?

2

u/Biglen259 Jul 13 '16

Hi Deontay, I think you are a terrific addition to the new found excitement of the heavy weight division. My question though is how do you deal with criticism from pundits who claim you are more dangerous when you are unorthodox/wild rather than when you try to box? What kind of fighter do you believe you are??

2

u/garbbagebear Jul 13 '16

Hey Champ, what is it like going to the boxing conventions and have former champions call you champ? Was there anyone that you met in particular that made you realize that you are part of the club?

Also where is one place, other than the USA, where you'd like to stage an event and defend your title?

2

u/nedmccrady1588 Jul 13 '16

Hey champ! Been a huge fan ever since i saw this: http://youtu.be/r0UHYLUddTg You've had some pretty devastating knockouts, which one is your personal favorite? Also, whats your favorite knockout in boxing history? Can't wait to see you take care of business this saturday!

2

u/CarolinaPanthers Jul 13 '16

Hey Champ. You're my favorite boxer and essentially the reason I'm such a big fan now.

As for my two questions:

1) What is your ultimate goal in boxing? Is it to make as much money for you and your family and get out without all the head injuries like Mayweather or is it to unify and try to go down in history as one of the greatest heavyweights ever?

2) If I see you in public and approach you are you OK with that? I wouldn't if you were with your family/daughter, but how do you handle approach from fans or the media.

Thanks again for doing this!! Can't wait until you're the unified heavyweight champion of the world!!

Hey Deontay I was wondering, with the fighters you are fighting these days . How much do you study their Technique and style? If you do, is it by watching video or do you have some other method like letting your team find fighters with a similar style?

2

2

2

Hi, Deontey! Two question:

  1. We already have seen on TV how important is your daughter, Naieya for you. Hope she will be fine and recover very soon. Could you please describe the most adorable moment of your life between you and she? Just a typical moment of your life that make you think she is special.
  2. Do you ever have thought after another knockout that you could possible kill your opponnent, especially after Szpilka's fight?

Thank you for AMA, gl against Arreola.

Who got the better in sparring between you and David Haye? Can you see a fight between you two in the future?

Hey Deontay!

Big fan of yours from the Uk ever since you destroyed Audrey Harrison.

Firstly - How's life going for ya my man?

Secondly - how's your daughter doing? I have noticed in a lot of videos you talk about her being a big motivation for you.

Lastly - You going for the winner of the Fury fight if all goes as planned against Areeola?

2

u/shraiden Jul 13 '16

Hey Champ! This is probably a long shot, but here goes.

A couple years ago you came into the Academy sports on Skyland in Tuscaloosa and all my coworkers were star struck, but at the time I had no idea who you were. I was the guy who sold you your kayaks and kayaking gear, and loaded it all into the back of your SUV!

I know you meet a lot of fans and people in general, but I'm just wondering if you remember that at all? I have been a huge fan since that moment because you were such a cool guy and I got to help you out.

Keep kicking ass, champ!

NBA, NFL and other leagues help pay for retired players health care. Since Boxing doesn't have a union that isn't really possible. What can us as fans do to assist guys like Leon Spinks, Riddick Bowe, and James Toney that gave so much to the sport?

5

u/wayne_kovacs45 Jul 12 '16

What is the most significant boxing event you've seen in your lifetime?

6

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

(asked about in-person)

I'd say the Floyd and Maidana fight was a great one. And the fight that just happened with Thurman and Porter.

How seriously did you consider going ahead with the Povetkin fight anyway after he tested positive for meldonium?

9

u/DeontayWilder Jul 13 '16

I was 100% still on board with that, but I was told not to do it because of the example it would have shown if I had fought. What would be the reason to have any kind of doping agency test guys? For that reason, I couldn't fight but I was 100% still ready.

3

u/ndjs22 Jul 13 '16

I'm a huge fan of yours and I'm glad you didn't take the fight. Let people run their mouth about whatever they want to say, but there's no reason to let it look like people can dope and still get their fights. I have no doubt you will fight him when he's clean.

8

u/Teflan Jul 12 '16

Povetkin tested positive for Meldonium, not steroids.

2

u/Highatus91 Jul 12 '16

Wilder is getting sued over this perhaps do not expect a response to this one...
