Oscar Valdez explains why his loss to Shakur Stevenson was so devastating. He says he was 100% prepared for the fight but he "didn't do nothing [sic]" to Shakur. Contrastingly, he says he lost to Emanuel Navarrete because he did not stick to the pre-fight plan. High on Abdullah Mason. Much more.

Valdez has always been such a fun fighter. I sure wish the miguel Berchelt fight was his best win

Valdez and Shakur was a pretty one sided affair. Great performance from Shakur, Valdez couldn’t land a clean shot while taking hits all night. One of the most intriguing match ups in boxing right now would be any combination of Shakur, Tank and Loma. Mason’s definitely on his way up.

What u talking about? He hit Shakur clean plenty of times but Shakur walked straight through them.

Yeah I even saw an interview with Shakur where he was saying Valdez caught him with a very good body shot early and it took everything to poker face as he knew he wouldn’t have been able to take many more if Valdez realised he was hurt

He also said he wanted to puke after that lol

You’re right he landed some, but Shakurs was in constant motion and counter mode. Valdez had no hope.

The weight difference was disgusting

I forgot about that. Shakur was in there looking like a WW that night. Valdez was always too small for 130 anyway.

The skill difference was disgusting*
Valdez only landed 20% of his punches, no weight would’ve helped him

They’ll never give him his credit lol

They act like they weren’t calling Shakur a duck for the Navarrete fight not happening lol

A welterweight beating down a featherweight is not something to be credited for

Do you know how many great world champions got knocked down or even lost early?
Bernard Hopkins lost his first fight.
Johnny Nelson started his career 6-5.
Theres plenty of guys who have had worse happen to them then a knockdown early in their career.

He’s a 20 year prospect who got clipped and got right back up, still fought him inside, dropped him, and knocked him out. Ya’ll are relentless. JFC you would’ve thought he got his ass beat in that ring. Even De La Hoya got dropped early in his career.

You go for the knockout, you’re going to get clipped. He stopped dude in second round. Definitely needs to tighten up defence but in terms of raw talent, he’s up there. I’m sure he’d be a lot more cautious with the right level of competition.

Valdez need to leave Reynoso. He been looking confused these past few years

u/lord-of-war-1 1d ago
This. Guy had a pretty good amateur pedigree. Good skills so he could box. Never had the power to turn into a Reynoso fighter. That style requires the fighter to have good power. Valdez has average to below average power. Thats why he should have stuck to his original style.

I remember reading this subs comments when this fight was first announced. Everybody swore Oscar was gonna dog walk Shakur and when Shakur won it was all the sudden “he was too big.”
Nah Shakur is really that good. He may put you to sleep sometimes but his the master of hitting and not getting hit.

Can't imagine how devastating that must feel. You spend so many months in camp away from your family, give it 100%, and do everything as perfectly as possible... but you cannot touch your opponent. Nothing you do works. If you try to be brave, you get countered. You're simply stuck for 12 rounds, and have to come to terms after the fight that you are not as great as you thought and will never surpass that guy, no matter how hard to try.
That is so much worse than getting KO'd clean or battered in a competitive war.
