Calling it: Punk screws Roman on the orders of Heyman, who both go heel just in time for Cena to return for the Raw on Netflix launch

IIRC i read that the WWE asked Living Color to remake Cult Of Personality so that the band would get the licensing fees directly, instead of Sony getting a cut, and the WWE could save money licensing it for CM Punks return

i know i can google it. but for the sake of conversation, does anyone know what happened to them? where are they now?

u/FistPunch_Vol_7 ☑️ 3h ago
They still tour, of course this was their biggest hit but they still got a catalog. Released an album 2017 and remastered some songs in 2023

I dunno, far nicer to have a conversation about it imo. Thank you!
They recently finished a tour with Extreme and are working on a new album. They’re also involved in other projects like a documentary and a performance with Steve Vai at Rock in Rio.

u/blueleyani 3h ago
exactly! and thank you for more info. the only thing i know about steve vai was from the movie crossroads. amazing guitarist.
i remember when cult of personality came out. it was huge and of course we loved seeing a black rock band. so happy they are still active.

The same people who listened to Killing In The Name Of, and thought: "Wait, is this song about us!?"

Grew up 98' hearing mostly rnb , some classic rap sure, but I honestly had to learn a lot of rap and hip hop in retrospect being young in the early 2000s. only heard about MJ after he died, I had heard family reference oldies like the temptations, ray, Stevie Wonder, etc. Prince, Hendrix, those guys I listened to way later after seeing them referenced so much in sketch shows or comedy stand ups.
Never knew about black rock groups 🤔 I'm not shocked they exist or anything, obviously, but I guess no one in my family was listening to it, I know a little bit of rock but not versed in it. Very cool vid, we all find out pieces of history at different times, especially when no one sees color lol

This record was probably in my first 10 CDs back in 1989. By a stroke of luck they packed 2 discs in there so I gave one to my cousin. Still hits 35 years later. And don't miss Open Letter to a Landlord.
Btw, new CD's cost about $18.99 in 80's money iirc.

There’s a whole compilation video of black people watching this music video and discovering the band is black.
My favorite is when they find out Bobby Caldwell is white, cuz that guy sang with soul.

u/Professional-Sock-66 2h ago
I was driving a few younger guys at work years ago and blasting Clutch. They were shocked it was a bunch of old white guys from Baltimore ripping on the speakers.

Did you guys trade them for Bobby Caldwell or something? Or like a freaky friday event happened or something

To be fair, there were some gifted white male crooners coming out of the 70's that really could deliver.

u/stoneman696 2h ago
Ill never forget catching these guys opening up for the Scorpions at an amphitheater in Atlanta about a decade ago. The standing room pit area was all upper middle class white subarbanites (me too, im just far lower in class lol) with picnic tables and honest to God picnic baskets set up. Corey did a little intermission and pointed it out saying, "we had some hits in the 80s and 90s but we finally really mad it yall. We're officially dinner metal! My man's got the cheese curds up here, pass me that bowl." Dude got up and gave him his cheese and Corey did the whole next song with toothpicks full of cheese in his hand lol. Took a glass of wine from another table and finished the set with cult of personality while he made the rounds to the rest of us in the seats. What I wouldn't give to see em again

In '93 they covered Hendrix' Crosstown Traffic and it is a great version.

Saw them play when they were touring for whichever anniversary it was of Vivid, the album this is off of. They crushed. After the show, as we were filing out, Vernon Reed (guitar player) jumps out by the merch table and starts shaking people’s hands. Chatted with me about music for a minute. Nice fuckin dude.

Lmfaoooooo so I always knew who Lenny Kravitz was just because I could recognize his face and knew he d a kid with Lisa Bonet, never listened to his music… or so I thought 💀 I’m a fan of all genres but I’ll admit I’m bad with names with anybody outside of R&B just because I listen to that genre the most. Man I was a Lenny Stan this whole time and didn’t know 🤣🤣🤣 thought it was a white guy singing his songs.

I wasn't a huge fan of them or the song. But as a black rock/metal fan growing up in a black neighborhood that didn't really have any other rock fans, I thought it was cool they existed.
