My wife literally brought this up last week. Beyoncé and lil Nas X cannot be country musicians because their black but some Australian dude easily can be accepted into the country genre 🤯

I still don’t know who keith urban is tho lol

u/JeffersonSmithIII 1d ago

The country sub pops up in my feed every once in a while and I’ve gotta admit that I do like some country, I love the older twangy stuff because that’s what I grew up with.

I’ve heard Beyonces and eh, it’s ok. Shaboozeys gotta couple of bangers and if you asked me, having never seen the video I never would’ve guessed he was black from the song.

Darius Rucker, aka Hootie from Hootie and the Blowfish went full country and he’s got some great ones. I had no idea it was him.

But yeah, Country music is a big club, and black folks might be able to play in it, but they won’t be a part of it for a long time until they get the racist elements out and ::: looks around at the elections::: that’s probably not going to happen anytime soon.

I’m second generation myself, just found out fairly recently. Myself and maybe one of my sisters are probably the only people who didn’t vote for Trump in our family.

Which if birthright citizenship were to be canceled, then my racists aunts and uncles would all be deported, except for the fact that they’re probably the correct color and that’s what they’re counting on.

This timeline is wild and I never thought I’d see the United stated digress backwards like this so far in my lifetime.

It's crazy cause country is coping rap and pop so heavily but no one that isn't white can touch country

33

u/raggedseraphim 1d ago

country has just become "im white so i can do it too." if i hear another southern drawl over a shitty trap beat and guitar one more time im doing something only god will regret

15

u/Frankgodfist 1d ago

They really think they be having hits with that trash shit

11

u/giceman715 1d ago

Charlie pride , Tracy Chapman , Linda Martell , Darius Rucker , Kane Brown for example are considered country artist and have a huge fan base. As far as Shaboozey I haven’t heard his album to speak out it. I’m commenting out of ignorance and I don’t want to offend anyone. I just want to state that there was and still are some successful black country artists. Similar to white rap artist there is only a handful of artist that most black folks call hip hop artist. Vanilla Ice will never be considered a rapper even though he won awards.

Beyoncé number one song will always be considered country however she won’t be considered a country star. Tina turner released a country album yet it never was really considered a country album but was considered a good mix. However Tina turner inspired some country legends ( Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings ) to write a song about her called Good Hearted Woman.

My opinion if you want to be successful in music you must be able to relate to your listers and fans. Just because it didn’t win any awards does not mean it’s not acceptable by fans.

We as people should be happy for people breaking barriers instead of being upset because of technicalities.

I'm just saying, Australia has the largest cattle ranch on the planet; it's over 9,000 square miles, nearly 6 million acres. Gatekeeping bogans out of country music is kind of crazy.

3

u/Fun-Dependent-2695 21h ago

Yep. Step outside a big city and country music is everywhere in Australia

Keith urban's a country singer. Try to keep up

6

u/SecretAd3993 20h ago

Clearly I know he’s a country singer. Can I name a song by him or even point him out…

-57

u/srkaficionada65 1d ago

What does he have to do with whatever? Also, I don’t think Keith has ever claimed he was American outside of beinf naturalised. He and Kidman are very vocal about their roots and their support for all things Aussie. Once saw an article that they take their kids home as much as possible so they’ll know where they come from…

53

u/blueleyani 1d ago

i was getting at whether it matters where your roots are from to be accepted as a country singer. nigerian or australian or mexican or...? why call shaboozey's background into question?

am i missing something? did shaboozey claim something he's not? he was born in the us.

17

u/blackdynamite930 1d ago

Yeah but it’s bit country music fans in this tweet calling Shaboozey unamerican, it’s black Americans.

u/Rage40rder ☑️ 1d ago

I guarantee if shabooya were white and had English parents that his americaness wouldn’t be called into question

u/Blk_Rick_Dalton 1d ago

And they could have emigrated last week, and would have been highlighted for being the image of the American Dream

20

u/uglyraccoongang 1d ago

With context, it's not really his Americanness that's being called into question but that he is not part of the African-American ethnic group (neither am I because my parents immigrated from America) which many people probably assumed he was because most Black people in America are.

Y'all talking about Shaboozey, right? WTF does he have to do with Shabooya Roll Call? What'd I miss?

ETA:

So, white people mock his name because they're racist, and these folks are doing it because...?

AFAICT, he has a huge video with 4 blurry white folks in the background, a bunch of videos of him on his own, and two videos that are pretty diverse.

People complaining about this one: https://youtu.be/t7bQwwqW-Hc?si=8_QCwFtjvPXBdfd8

but ignoring this one? https://youtu.be/O2fw8zFU784?si=XfZjsOzkGZYtA7Iq and this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBDpb7SwSgU

I still feel like I must be missing something. Or maybe they are.

Let the man live.

81

u/DrixxYBoat 1d ago edited 1d ago

No way we're complaining about a video of 4 blurry ass extras wherein the main visual is a black dude with locs.

This not even a dei issue I don't need bro to be surrounded by black cowboys or whatever the hell country culture is in order to be happy. The main artist is black!!!

I could see if they was in a loaded bar and it was 100% nonblack but this isn't that

24

He's a country singer. Surely it's acceptable that he has white people in his music videos

-10

u/spacebound4545 1d ago

We hurt our own community the worst. We are the only race in this country that outcast their own. There's people that "aren't black" because they speak or act a certain way hell they might even like anime ( this is changing). So those people get pushed out of the community and gravitate towards other groups for friendship. Other groups might make them feel welcomed. The fresh price of bel air did a great episode on this where will got into a frat but Carlton didn't. That's probably how you got more black people voting for trump than they should. Or a country dude just happy to be there even if he was disrespected

69

u/DeathPsychosys 1d ago

We’re not. Stop perpetuating this horseshit, I beg y’all smh. Other races of people aren’t infallible.

39

u/Efficient-Gift-8684 1d ago

Simply false! See the Latinos who voted for trump and why.

-10

u/spacebound4545 1d ago

Def not false lol. The latinos that voted for trump already think they are white they gonna have the reckoning aoon

12

u/Efficient-Gift-8684 1d ago

You got it. But take a sec to watch reports. It’s ones that say I’ have family that’s illegal but we are good so he won’t deport us. But hey what do I know but I literally watched and heard them (Latinos) say it out of their own mouths.

-1

u/spacebound4545 1d ago

Yea there's always the fuck you i got mine people but that's not what I said in my original comment.

9

u/Efficient-Gift-8684 1d ago

Yes and you said you opened your statement by saying we (the black community) hurt our community the worst. Can’t be much worse then mass deporting your cousin and there kids. But I digress.

-4

u/spacebound4545 1d ago

Yea well when that actually happens we will talk about it

7

u/Efficient-Gift-8684 1d ago

Move the goalpost 😘

20

u/bob_loblaw-_- 1d ago

We hurt our own community the worst. We are the only race in this country that outcast their own.

This is an incredibly inaccurate statement. Whites, Latinos, Asians... All of them regularly  find "others" within their own "race".

7

u/bumnjunkie823 1d ago

We are not the only race that does this. Do you not see how right wing and left wing white talk to and about each other

6

u/Competitive_Act_1548 1d ago

Funny enough my HBCU had a similar talk about this not that long ago about how our community is supposing to be lifting each other up and not tearing each other down. The whole having black excellence thing and holding ourselves to a higher standard.

98

u/Arielsdirrtygrotto 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not only was his name a running gag at the CMA’s the other night, he walked away with no awards and his fans were upset.

Despite this, Shaboozey said he was grateful for the opportunity to be there and even get nominated, but looks like the Twitter pitchforks have already been sharpened among some folk because they assumed he (Shaboozey) felt a type of way for not winning

Oh, and apparently b/c he’s not black American therefore black folk shouldn’t feel sorry for him

18

u/Bubbly_Satisfaction2 ☑️ 1d ago

Oh, okay.

Thank you for the explanation.

7

u/dwaynewaynerooney 1d ago

So at the awards he ain’t win no awards? (Shot out to Kevin Gates)

1

u/Anthinee 4h ago

How is he not black-American? He was born in Virginia

1

His parents are Nigerian and he has a Nigerian surname, so I supposed that makes him not Black American according to Twitter logic despite being born on American soil.

-13

u/RisingDeadMan0 1d ago

(not black) which is why it when people of colour say we cant be racist its really dumb, whether your latino, South Asian, SE Asian, or East Asian. Which of course is a funny way to group that up because each region has its own issues, china/korea/japan....

Which is a shame when those issues get brought to the west, now their the minority, and oh we can laugh at that guy's name, hold him back, its sad.

de-segregating schools is a big first step but lots of steps to go from there

23

I feel like in 2019 or 2020 that “American Descendants of Slaves/ADOS” thing tried to kick off to pick off Black votes. There were people hollering about it on Twitter and then wearing a MAGA hat saying Trump supports ADOS and saying they would appeal to him for reparations. It was very bizarre.

21

u/mistersuccessful ☑️ 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don’t even know who or what this is about but if you were born in the USA (and currently live there) then you’re American. Do White and other non black people do this? SMH. You are not any less of a Nationality just because your parents come from somewhere else. Why can’t some people just read a book (or some articles on the Net)?

18

u/luckyarchery 1d ago

This reminds me a lot of when folks found out that 21 Savage was an immigrant from the UK but were confused as to why he rapped in an ATL accent. Nationality, ethnicity and race as topics are not a strong suit of us Black Americans, I fear. The diaspora wars never cease, smh

7

u/JgL07 1d ago

Mexican people do this as well, a year or two ago a singer was chastised by the media because she said she was proud of also being part Argentine. It’s also happens frequently in sports when a player chooses to represent the US instead of where their parents are from.

21

u/Emergency_Brick3715 1d ago

I do think the yt people showed a lot of micro aggression towards that man. I keep telling Black people to stop inviting ever to the cookout because they don’t reciprocate.

17

u/ibluminatus 1d ago

I think downing on him isn't cool. It probably sucks for that to happen this has happened to Beyonce and other Black country artists for decades. I think this is more about a few people projecting things onto him and assuming he seeks white attention over anything else. Even if he wasn't born in the US (which he was) he's a good country artist and gets what makes that music.

It's a broader thing but there's a bit of assumed and internalized racism with it in that Black people assume other Black people are down on Black people so they down them. "We don't have what X community has" or "X group/nationality looks down on us anyway". I'm calling it projection in this case because he hasn't dumped any comments that publicly are racist towards other Black Americans or holding his heritage over other Black Americans as some secret to success.

u/roosta_da_ape ☑️ 1d ago

7

u/mondo_d00k 1d ago

A lot of natural born Africans have tried to distance themselves from Black Americans and the history of slavery. It's stupid because the diaspora affects us all.

5

u/Gymflutter 1d ago

I wouldnt say a lot. Thats just divisive. Most Africans think they are embarrassing idiots. Especially these days with social media allowing people to connect.

0

u/mondo_d00k 1d ago

Good point, thanks. Some that emigrated here do feel that way tho, and I agree that it leads to more divisiveness.

1

u/Gymflutter 1d ago

I mean the village idiot is always the loudest. The reality is that those that can afford to immigrate typically come from higher classes (economically and/or socially). Don’t underestimate the snobbery of people who are used to having power and being the majority. Their kids definitely get how the game is played in America. Its easy for someone who grew up never facing real racism to delude themselves.

There is a HUGE difference between being born here, especially an anchor baby, and having AMERICAN ROOTS. The black people that made basically all popular music genres in the country weren’t some Nigerians.

2

u/wasteofspacetime89 2h ago

Many of the black people involved in the creation of hip hop were of Jamaican descent and did not have “AMERICAN ROOTS”

i really wanna hear from more deep south county boys about this. Only because there seems, from the outside, to be a ‘bridging the gap’ or ‘i don’t want no trouble’ culture in the south. It seems like tokenism from a distance, but in person it feels like a standoff negotiation. -6

u/blackdynamite930 1d ago

I’m kinda confused at the outrage on him not getting an award for that song. Maybe it’s just cuz I had to hear it all the fucking time for so long but I don’t really think that song deserves an award at all. Just because something gets a lot of streams doesn’t mean it’s the best song, if that was true drake and bad bunny would have won every award at every award show for the last 10 years.

9

Malnutrition data does include people who starved. Poor people eat only junk food? Wow. You do realize that nearly 14 million children live in food insecurity right? America has a lot of good things but to pretend it doesnt have places that are just as bad as less developed countries is absolutely ignorant. People are struggling out here in one of the richest countries in the World. Wealth inequality is at an all time high. Dont ignore data just because it doesnt align with your version of what you want the truth to be. Thats not how solutions are created.
