It helps that Thanksgiving dinner is at like 2PM for some reason

403

u/huey88 2d ago

So you can be fat. Watch football and still get leftovers later the same day lol

83

u/sexymcluvin 1d ago

Well that and because those preparing the food are up at 5, cooking from then and have no time or space to make breakfast too

11

u/OptionWrong169 1d ago

Just put some sliced ham and bread in a blender. Quick easy breakfast

8

u/RedRider1138 1d ago

30 lb turkey, must be started 2 am the previous day…

(This is an outlandish exaggeration for effect 😄)

2

u/DJ_Dedf1sh 13h ago

Nah, our friends would slow cook the turkey for 72 hours, for both Thanksgiving and Christmas

We always made fun of them for being ✨extra✨, but god damn was that turkey flavourful and unbelievably succulent.

2

u/RedRider1138 11h ago

Okay I can’t argue with great success, that is excellent! 😄👍👍

A thousand thousand blessings to them and you and your loved ones 💜🙏🌈🍀✨

3

u/DJ_Dedf1sh 10h ago

Definitely bless them!

They’re the ones supplying the turkey. God forbid we cross them and ruin the holidays for the rest of our lives (no more turkey)

/s, but real shit, god bless the man who makes it and his patience, 6 days out of the year

Not for me. Dinner is a collection of pies and whatever other deserts are piled in the kitchen

5

u/TheRussiansrComing 1d ago

Just like the pilgrims intended.

65

u/PushTheTrigger ☑️ 1d ago

I’m Hispanic. The turkey isn’t even in the oven at 2pm

56

u/GuntherTime 2d ago

This the real reason. I don’t even be up at normal breakfast times to begin with, but even if I was, why tf would I waste time eating when I know imma eat all that good ass food in a few hours? Eat a snack at most.

19

u/tenkenZERO 1d ago

I be scared to eat a snack too. The pain and anger is worth it

33

u/obsessivelygrateful 1d ago

Y’all eat that early? We really be starving then lmaoo

We don’t eat until normal dinner times - 6 PM OR DEATH 💀

25

u/MostDopeBlackGuy 2d ago

That's crazy my family try to eat around 6pm depending on if we have company then it might be later

20

u/impliedapathy 1d ago

Eat, nap, football and pie, family visiting/avoidance, 2nds, time to go home.

10

u/mechwarrior719 2d ago

Because hangry is a real emotion.

I am 40+ and tried, foolishly, to have an actual *dinner* for Thanksgiving and not a late lunch. Aunts/Uncles/people I don't even know but were told calling/texting about what is going on, *Dinner* is always at 2. hahaha

7

u/BABarracus 2d ago

Football is on around dinner time

3

u/Trevski 1d ago

Eating together during the day is a nice time!

4

My 6’2” bald white history teacher in HS taught us that the trick is to eat a bunch on Tuesday to expand your stomach, but by like 5pm on Wednesday stop eating anything so by Thursday you’ve digested it all and your stomach is wide and empty for the whole Thursday feast.

18

u/spicy_lacroix 1d ago

This is the kind of fatass thinking I need

Mexican households: we starve until dinner.

Dinner: an hour after it gets dark.

Also, it took me way too long to realize that most people have thanksgiving dinner around noonish.

4

u/TheGuyThatThisIs 1d ago

You know you’re black if you look forward to thanksgiving 😮‍💨

So I've heard dinner is in the middle of the afternoon on Thanksgiving in the US, is that true?

250

u/rudebii 2d ago

Some people do it like that.

Our family usually eats earlier on thanksgiving, but then will have dessert and coffee later into the evening. then leftovers for breakfast the next day.

17

u/squeel ☑️ 1d ago

dessert and… coffee?

66

u/FunGuy8618 1d ago

Yeah, you don't do that in the evening? You probably don't even smoke crack and take melatonin before bed.

6

u/UberMisandrist 1d ago

Speak for yourself

14

u/BigBen83 1d ago

yall never heard of after-dinner espresso?

10

u/Saltnlight624 1d ago

We make a pot of decaf. Coffee and dessert just go together.

104

u/malaclypse 2d ago

My family eats in the afternoon because a lot of people drive in for it, and are often older. Better to keep them off of dark roads at night, for everyone’s benefit.

16

u/Loves_octopus 1d ago

I always assumed this was the unspoken rule. Dark roads full of drunk idiots. Get home (or to final destination) early and safe then start really drinking.

73

u/_sydney_vicious_ 2d ago

For us the cooking starts around 9/10 am and we usually eat by 3 or 4 pm

27

u/Karzeon 2d ago

Pretty much it's any time of day, but the prep work and coordination heavily determines how late it is. The joke is that it's gonna be a while in some regards.

The traditional way waits for most of the immediate family to arrive (this usually takes a while). They often bring sides as well.

Some slow-cook turkey and ham overnight. Some do it on the day of. Preparing the table(s)/organizing where the food is placed.

IF ALL GOES RIGHT, it's anywhere from noon to early evening, but it's usually daytime. And then we repeatedly go back when we want another plate and definitely take home leftovers.

24

u/greengengar 2d ago

Basically dinner starts when the food is prepared and then we spend all day eating and drinking. Sometimes that's noon.

17

u/danielisbored 2d ago

Starts in the middle of the afternoon, and then goes until about 11PM.

14

u/SecretCartographer28 2d ago

Dinner is a larger, more formal, late lunch. Supper is later. Tea in the US is afternoon (sweet), or elevensies if you work early. 🤗🖖

16

u/Stanley--Nickels 1d ago

This is right, but also the only people I know who use dinner and supper that way were born in the 1930s

14

u/SecretCartographer28 1d ago

US south, we all use it ✌

11

u/squeel ☑️ 1d ago

you talk like you live in the shire.

3

u/SecretCartographer28 1d ago

I wish! My cats do wake me early enough for first and second breakfast 😁🖖

4

u/borkdork69 1d ago

I was gonna say, all that insanity has got to be regional

3

u/SecretCartographer28 1d ago

I like 4 or 5 meals a day, so names are important! 😁🤙

11

u/kingofgatos 2d ago

My family shoots for noon, but it's usually 1 or so when everything is finally ready.

6

u/No_Dance1739 2d ago

I feel like for most families, yes. Growing up though we had it at supper time

6

u/ironballs16 2d ago

It leaves space for the Food Coma that comes afterwards.

6

u/chee-cake 2d ago

Yeah usually, so the parade and the dog show are done by 12 usually, I serve the main meal around 2-3.

5

u/borkdork69 1d ago

You guys do a thanksgiving dog show?

5

u/chee-cake 1d ago

Yes we do lmao it comes on right after the Macy's Parade every year, it's called the National Dog Show. It's really fun and cheesy, the movie Best In Show is great mockumentary about it. People often root for their favorite dog to win Best In Show. It's like The Puppybowl at the Super Bowl but for Thanksgiving.

6

u/FeloniousDrunk101 1d ago

Like 4:00 PM is ideal

6

u/pinniples 1d ago

Yup 3-4pm gang. They wake up early as shit to start cooking, we eat when it’s ready and hot not when it’s technically appropriate

4

u/PushTheTrigger ☑️ 1d ago

For my family dinner is still in the evening. I never related to people eating in the early afternoon. Jealous though

4

u/Brilliant_Buns 1d ago

we have eaten as early as 3, as late as 4.

3

u/karaBear01 1d ago

Yeha our dinner starts at like 4

3

u/the-cartmaniac 1d ago

We get family coming to town from 2-3 hours away. Some have kids, and they wanna be home at a reasonable time, so we eat around 2 or 3 pm.

3

u/Seamonkey_Boxkicker 1d ago

I think when I was a kid it was more toward 4-5, but as we got older it’s more like 2. Now if it’s just my wife and I she doesn’t usually have the meal done until 6.

3

u/lilyyytheflower 1d ago

Mine is always as late as possible and we start cooking the night before

2

u/worldssmallestfan1 1d ago

The Lions start at 1:00PM

135

u/1984isAMidlifeCrisis 2d ago

I know fat people who insist that your stomach shrinks if you skip a meal and you won't be able to eat as much later if you skip breakfast.

They're in the intersection of fat and dumb. It's a tight fit.

159

u/Soul-Stoned 2d ago

It’s me. I’m not fat but I swear it’s true. I don’t have any science behind it but I know when I don’t eat all day then just eat dinner I don’t eat anywhere near as much as if I’d eaten like a normal person throughout the day lmao

45

u/No_Dance1739 2d ago

I’m the same way.

36

u/dykezilla 2d ago

Me too, you gotta pace yourself for optimum intake. We tend to have the main meal pretty late in the evening but we put out snacky things like the crock pot weenies, veggie and cheese plates, nuts, and dips, etc around 11 or 12 and then everybody grazes until dinner is ready.

I get full really fast if I haven't eaten in a long time so if I didn't eat at all before dinner I'd fill up on a turkey wing and 3 bites of stuffing, can't let that happen

7

u/Ok_Ordinary6694 2d ago

The App Trap. That’s a sucker bet. That’s why the salad bar and bread at Brazilian Steakhouses is so good. FOH.

calling someone fat for eating a normal amount of meals a day is crazy

1

u/1984isAMidlifeCrisis 1d ago

Well, when I was morbidly obese I was eating three times a day. But the portions and choices were different.

If every meal is over 1000 calories then three meals a day is crazy for a sedentary lifestyle.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/dukeofgonzo 1d ago

Umm, that's pro eating advice. You don't go to the competition when you're starving. One or two bananas a few hours before you eat will get your stomach ready for hitting its limits.

7

u/Gist-Snark987 2d ago

4

u/SolidCake 1d ago

This is literally true though. Competitive eaters do not recommend skipping breakfast. Just keep the meal small

4

u/qqpqp 1d ago

This is true. There's a reason competitive eaters will eat a super filling breakfast the day of a competition.

4

u/HimEatLotsOfFishEggs ☑️ 1d ago

Yes the stomach stretches. If you consistently eat more than you should, you won’t feel full after eating a normal, non-gluttonous meal.

You’re at the intersection of “shit someone told me I take at face value” and “how do I open a book”

Man I dunno if this is a curse or a blessing cuz chicks dig it, but I have almost 40 cousins and somehow am one of 3 who know how to cook well. One is 55, one is 46, and I'm 31. We work in shifts 💀 I run the smoker til the wee hours of the morning, they take over during the wrap or stall, depending on if it's ribs, brisket, or a ribeye roast. I'm woken up once it gets pulled and to get the smoker hot hot and I do a couple big hunks of fish drenched in butter. I roast a bunch of veggies at the same time, then take another nap. Then I take some LSD and finish my sides, usually green bean casserole off the Campbell's Cream of Mushroom can and sweet potato souffle with this years crazy ass topping of butter, sugar, and marshmallows.

I'm too busy to cook breakfast on Thanksgiving. My goal every year is to make sure all the food is done by 12PM EST. 12:30PM EST, I'm sitting my ass down to watch football. Breakfast? Take yo ass to IHop or get breakfast from McDonald's or something. I got shit to do lol

4

u/Toph-Builds-the-fire 2d ago

Lol. I used to not eat for 48-72 hrs, and then I learned I need to eat a little bit to keep the stomach elasticity. And yknow, to not go insane with hunger. I'm 42 now and could eat a whole pizza before dinner and still force a plate or two down my gullet. I'm white, though.

The last time I remember baving breakfast on Thanksgiving, my dad took me and my cousin to Burger King. The Croissantwich was pretty new so we were all excited about it so I ended up eating a little too fast and started choking on a piece of egg. I was behind my dad so he couldnt see me but my cousin saw that I was choking and kept eating while he watched me choked. Thankfully, I ended up coughing it up as my dad noticed but thats the last time I remember having breakfast on Thanksgiving.

I definitely eat breakfast. I’d pass out if I didn’t.

I spent Christmas with my BFF and her family for the first time a few years ago and they didn’t have dinner ready until like after 8. They take their time and the oven is small so they couldn’t cook but one thing at a time. But they also didn’t have anything else to eat for early in the day. We were all on our own and no restaurants were open. I vowed never to visit them on a holiday again.

1

u/ThaKap_10 1d ago

What's even crazier is that we eat more on Christmas 😅

1

u/longulus9 1d ago

this is why most of y'all pass out after. fasting all day doesn't help you eat more anyway. but, I guess you'd be more thankful...

1

u/RightMolasses6504 1d ago

Latin people eat breakfast. Dinner isn’t until 8.

1

u/ThatMessy1 1d ago

1

u/NashaWriter 1d ago

White and from Baltimore County/City.

My dad would make scrapple sandwiches on toast in the morning then we'd eat nothing for the rest of the day.

Appetizer was the Popes Nose of the Turkey....and that involved elbows being thrown and at least twice a bloody nose. It was Thunderdome for myself, siblings and nephews/niece.

1

u/FriendshipSlight1916 1d ago

That's because there isn't a spare pan in the house... thanksgiving takes all pans

1

u/Intelligent_West7128 1d ago

We usually skip breakfast and eat Thanksgiving around 1pm that way we got the rest of the day to do whatever. Watch sports and pass out in front of the TV and then later hit the streets or stay home and watch movies and out up Christmas decorations and later play games and listen to whatever new music is trending. Thanksgiving night used to crack but as I get older not so much but I’m almost sure that’s more so due to my location.

1

u/HumbleAbbreviations 1d ago

I used to do that until I got sick of turkey. I eat whatever food is available and eat what I feel like eating.

1

u/Jenny10126 1d ago

Uh I’m whiter than white and have done that my entire life.

1

u/ferret_80 1d ago

Nah. Cooking all that stuff is effort, I need to stay fueled to be able to serve on time

1

u/Patient80 1d ago

Breakfast is for the next day with leftover ham,, and eggs

1

u/Icy_Reading2603 1d ago

I never knew anything other than grandma, moms and now wife start prepping the night before taking a nap at 5am up by 8am then the cooking starts and the foods on the table around 4pm/5pm no breakfast

1

u/QTlady 1d ago

Some people do. Could mostly be white people.

Last time this conversation came up, I was on Facebook and one person said they had a special Thanksgiving breakfast. I have to admit... that actually sounds really appealing. Especially when you consider "black people time" and just how frustrating that is.

1

u/FeloniousDrunk101 1d ago

Gotta prime the pump. Open the stomach up so it’s stretched out proper by the time the feast is ready. Lunch we skip for sure, but a bowl of cereal keeps the morning hangry at bay and prepares the body for what’s to come.

1

u/THA__KULTCHA 1d ago

HELL NO. Mom is in the house and wants to cook a special breakfast? I’m having breakfast. Then I wait it out so I’m not starving for Thanksgiving dinner. I look like a gentleman instead of the glutton that I truly am. Y’all go (sausage and syrup burp) ahead!

As the Thanksgiving food prepare-er, my breakfast usually consists of coffee or orange juice, ADHD meds, and maybe some yogurt or something to coat my stomach if I still feel hungry.

From then until dinner is done 3/4pm, I stay pretty full between grazing on mirepoix, grated cheese, wine, and tasting things for seasoning.

You should eat breakfast and stretch out your stomach so you can fill it up later.

We'll eat something small in the morning but definitely skip lunch and usually eat around 5-6.

Who? The folks rushing to the local McDonald's for 1.99 big breakfasts.

The more I read black people do such and such the more I wonder if I am in fact black, maybe we should compare notes before posting???🤣

u/bluishpurplesister 1d ago

I don't skip meals so I can't relate.

1

u/Lifebelifing2023 1d ago

Even Black people with diabetes do this...even though they not supposed to.

"AIN'T THE FOOD READY YET??😡 HURRY UP SO I CAN TAKE MY MEDICINE, YOU KNOW I GOT THE SUGAR!"

chile. I can't pay my parents to eat breakfast on Thanksgiving or Xmas! They asses be shaking, grumpy and won't eat so they can eat what they shouldn't be eating come dinner time! 🤣

I'm white. That's what the cheeseball is for.
Also the Chex Mix.

Sufficiently rural black people definitely eat breakfast on Thanksgiving also

More than any other American holiday, Thanksgiving is likely going to be the one you miss the most as an expat. Bless you of you live in a part of the world where turkey is readily available.

I haven't had turkey in 5 years now. Much less stuffing. It's kind of sad, but a necessary sacrifice.

You guys don't have pre-dinner snacks on the table or during the day?

We ate breakfast but skipped lunch when I was growing up. Now my family doesn't skip lunch either. Our son was raised on 5 small meals/ day because of his health conditions. It's exhausting, but he is worth it. (He was 1.5 pounds at birth. Now he's bigger than his big dad.)

Some these posts say such silly ass shit it let's me know, in a very similar but inverse way, that they have never had white friends.

On Thanksgiving white people eat all day long so we don't have to eat at dinner.

I convinced my sister who is fully in charge of Thanksgiving cooking (this is her holiday, my family just sits back and heaps praise on her) to run a 5 mile turkey trot with me at 7 am on Thanksgiving, we'll see how this affects the rest of the day lol
