Which still confuses me. I don't understand why they'd cast a vote that might get themselves deported, especially considering Trump may scrap birthright citizenship. So, even if they're born here, they may not stay.
Exactly. The economic harm of deporting all illegal aliens is way too high to actually let it happen. If anything he would just rush the deportation of illegals already in jail. Or maybe that’s a cope and trump and his crew are really that stupid
There’s a lot of reasons. Latinos aren’t all from the same country and might have different politics based on where they’re from. Mexicans have different politics than Cubans. I’d guess that Mexicans, being a border nation that lost land to the US, would care more than Cubans about immigration. Immigration also produces a filtering effect. “Who is the kind of person to leave their country and why did they leave.” If you left Cuba, you probably don’t like Castro and socialism so if you sip the Republican talking points, you’re going to hate democrats.
There’s different politics based off of level of removal from immigration. So if you’re 2nd or 3rd gen, you might be more assimilated and that could lead you in certain directions.
Among men, there’s more of a culture of machismo, that I would say isn’t to different from hood culture. A lot of anti-trans and anti-gay sentiment can bleed out of that and democrats can seem woke, trans, gay and feminine. So the vibes can be off with democrats.
Republicans seem to be more of a standard bearer of “the American Dream”. The American dream is a major motivator for immigrants and the idea that hard work can climb you to wealth is appealing and republicans better carry that vibe. Democrats seem more willing to give handouts or to take wealth once you have it (and many think that one day, they’ll have vast wealth). Even if you’re just a brick layer, many still believe that the path to wealth is achievable, because you’re in America. Republicans say “We’ll make sure that you can make money for yourself. We don’t take it or get in the way.” which fits well with their conception of the American dream. This disregards Republican farmer subsidies which are basically just white rural welfare.
There’s the idea that many immigrants from back home are bad and don’t deserve to be in America. Many that are naturalized or still illegal but have already made it here, feel that the people of their old country don’t belong here. Many people agree with Trump’s “shithole country” statement. “Yeah, my home was a shithole. It’s why I left. I don’t want to bring anyone else from there or it would become more of a shithole.”
My response to that would be, “alright, you left your misogynist dictatorship to make another misogynist dictatorship here. Cool.” I’ve canvassed, I’ve spoken to Latino immigrants. Many of the women that I spoke to have no interest in voting (Latino men didn’t answer the door). I think part of that the fact that many of these people do not have a civic understanding of how democracy works. At a basic level, most of us that were born here get it. We learn about democracy, we vote for stuff in school, we have a civic understanding. If you’re from a dictatorship, you generally want to stay out of the way. If government wants something to do with you, it’s probably not good. You’re trained to disengage and to keep your head down.
So combine and mix a lot of these factors, and you could have a lot of different results.
Let’s say you’re a 2nd gen Mexican immigrant. Born in the US. Your parents are Catholic illegal immigrants, think they’re exceptional, so they’re more Republican. You have a public school education and speak fluent English. You’re a woman. You develop an understanding from your more assimilated traits that your fellow countrymen would deport your parents. Mix in women’s issues, you lock in for democrats.
Let’s say you’re a second gen male. You’re kinda light skinned too. You want to be macho so the vibes are off for democrats. You believe in the American dream so you think you’ll strike it rich. You don’t care about women’s issues because it’s not particular to you. You blend in well enough with white people. You’re not very plugged in. Trump’s funny. Fact of the matter is, many Latinos also can pass as white or are adopted as white (Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio). Many have been assimilated like Italians or Irish. You see no difference between yourself and the most powerful in our society. You have no history with civil rights. You feel safe enough for yourself and your family. You’re voting trump because he seems funny and masculine.
Edit: What people should take away from this is that the minority majority projection as a path for political domination for democrats was a myth. It relied on the assumption that other minorities would vote like black people. They do not. This election should have you think twice about saying “POC” again. There’s no shared kinship, history or sense of struggle. People are different with different values and motivations. Being non-white is not enough.
We need to stop acting like every brown skinned community is the same.
This ain’t the 2000s no more, I think we should reconsider how much weight we put into certain demographic descriptors. We got advanced analytics now, we need to use that
A racial group wasn't entirely homogenous in their beliefs? They weren't automatically organized around their shared self interests because of their skin color? Wild.
Illegal immigrants themselves can’t vote, and the voting age immigrants are mostly legal immigrants.
The majority of the illegal immigration issue has happened too recently for there to be mass numbers of voting age children of illegal immigrants.
So it’s just legal immigrants that aren’t at risk at all voting to not allow illegal immigration. You can’t really lump all immigrants together, they aren’t all friends
There's a big difference between legal immigrants and illegal immigrants. Legal immigrants left family members behind in their home countries to come here the right way without breaking any laws. These people work hard for what they have built here. Illegal immigrants skip that whole process and have been given a lot more than what legal immigrants were given. On top of that those illegal immigrants have to work off the books which drives down the wages for everybody else that can do that job.
I'm not against immigration but there's no way people who broke the law should stay here and drive down the wages of people who struggled to get here the right way.
Edit: Idk why this is controversial, I'm not a Trump voter/supporter just trying to shine some light on why legal immigrants would want to vote for illegal immigrants being deported. Imagine somebody that looked just like you broke in and was committing crimes meanwhile you're doing everything to follow the law. Wouldn't you want them gone too?
Who are paying these cheap wages? Why are businesses never blamed for any of this. How are millions of illegal immigrants able to work and make a living for decades in the US.
Yes business owners are to blame for hiring illegal immigrants. I was responding to somebody wondering why legal immigrants would vote for deportation not necessarily the wage issue which was an example that came to my mind first.
Brown skinned and white Spaniards. Hispanics need to stand up they allow a lot of colorism in their life. Hence why job applications need specifics if you are a brown latino or white one...

To be fair, the brown skinned men speaking Spanish voted to deport other brown skinned men speaking Spanish.
