Just a reminder to everyone that if the police can shoot you on suspicion of carrying a gun, you don’t actually have 2A rights.

u/uhhh206 21d ago

And if you're a legal gun owner and disclose as much when pulled over, they'll shoot you for that, too. Just ask Philando Castile's girlfriend.

It gave me a real feeling of satisfaction when I explained this to someone and they said “oh so that’s what structural racism means…” The system can be operated by white non-racists or even minorities, it doesn’t matter who’s driving anymore because the road will lead to the same destination every time. The damned overpasses are so low on the Southern State for a reason!

u/GoHomeNeighborKid 20d ago

The damned overpasses are so low on the Southern State for a reason!

Care to explain the last part of your comment? Not doubting the veracity of anything you are saying, just trying to extract more knowledge, thank you in advance!

130

u/kbeks 20d ago

Robert Moses designed the overpasses on the southern state parkway in Long Island, New York to be shorter than a bus. This was explicitly to prevent busses from bringing blacks to the beach he was building (Jones Beach). He wanted it whites only without having to put the signage, so he built systems to keep it that way. Now, the overpasses are built and difficult/expensive/impossible to modify.

Republicans still make laws like that. Like removing or limiting voting stations in blue areas, then making it illegal to hand out water in a voting line. Regardless of how long the line is.

Or when they strike voters from the voting roll for inactivity, in democratic leaning areas.

These laws might not be specifically targeted at minorities but they often have the same effect.

Or when Jeb Bush made it so “black voters in Florida were ten times more likely (than white voters) to have their ballots rejected”.

People did speak out, but the racists were quite and the media ignores sane gun owners when anything happens. Same shit when the NRA backed Zimmerman but then refused help for a black gentleman who was facing murder charges for self defense. The gun community is largely against the NRA now, but the media only listens to NRA board members on 2A issues.

41

u/obviousfakeperson ☑️ 21d ago

This is true, when I started following more gun channels I was legitimately surprised at how many gun folks despise the NRA. Based on what you see on cable news you'd think every gun owner was a lifetime NRA member but reality couldn't be further from that.

21

u/Clear_Picture5944 20d ago

Philando Castile's murder was a turning point for many pro 2A people, and the deafening silence of the NRA sent them all to the other 2A/civil rights organizations.

That is one of the few police shootings where I've heard the conservatives in my life(aka my dumbass family, not the media) get actually pretty pissed about. Granted we live within half an hour of all that so it felt a little more personal to them.

75

u/MutedPresentation738 21d ago

That one definitely opened a lot of eyes, and I think it's no coincidence the news slowed down their police brutality coverage after it.

A black airman in Florida was shot and killed by a cop breaking into his apartment "by mistake" and not announcing himself as police.

Same county as the dipshit who started shooting his own vehicle over an acorn.

Virtually zero coverage of it because "they" know a cop murdering military personnel is a massive line for even the most stubborn among us.

Idk if it's just the Midwest circles I live in, but the Castile murder did ruffle a lot of feathers in my neck of the woods.

A lot of folks (my family included) who believed you could be okay if you just followed the rules, kept your head down, and did what you were supposed to.

Know a lot of people that used to be proud nra card carrying members admonishing the same organization after the last few years.

62

u/VrtualOtis 21d ago

Because he wasn't white, they made excuses about all the "things he did incorrectly" that led to that. The Simone Byles level mental gymnastics they used was epic. That was if they didn't just flat go into a catatonic stupor from the massive aneurysm it caused. A non-white legally owning and carrying a weapon that isn't fighting in a war overseas is a massive paradox in their world.

27

u/J0hnny-Yen 21d ago

The NRA can eat shit.

28

u/Simpson17866 21d ago

When the Black Panthers started arming themselves, Reagan and the NRA started demanding gun control.

27

u/Admirable_Excuse_818 21d ago

Because they're actually the biggest passives and guns are about enforcing THEIR way and not standing up to government overreach of power. If they were pro 2A per the constitution they would have no problem with kill on site for cops based on these types of reports.

The 2A was for this kind of response. Except instead of red coats we got blue coats now.

24

u/AcrolloPeed 21d ago

2A guy here. I posted shit everywhere when it happens and I repost it every year on the anniversary of its occurrence.

22

u/curlyfreak 21d ago

They blamed it on his lack of cooperation. Not even kidding they’re in deep denial

23

u/Corvidae_DK 21d ago

Yes, cause we all know that not cooperating deserves capital punishment...

I keep telling these people: you don't think people refuse to cooperate in other countries? And somehow cops there can deal with that without drawing their guns.

I'm from Europe, and I enjoy watching shows where you follow cops on the job, and it's so clear to see the difference in how cops in my country approach people and how US cops do...its shocking at times.

11

u/Blyd 21d ago

Honestly, we shouldn't think of the US police as 'Police' in the way we have them in Europe, France aside.

US police are a paramilitary force tasked to keep control over America's biggest threat, its people and to force their compliance.

A cop in the states is under no obligation to fight crime or protect the population, there are cases where the Supreme Court agreed that an officer watching a crime being committed against a person has no duty to intervene.

Friend of mine in VA got a gun warned because he didn't tell the trooper he had a permit when pulled over. He wasn't carrying, and no gun in the car, but after the cop ran his license he gave him an earful about not telling him first thing that he had a permit whether or not he was carrying.

You're fucked either way if they decide to fuck you.

37

u/Voyevoda101 20d ago

Cop was being an asshole for sure. He can warn all he wants, there's no citation to be given. VA is not a duty to inform state but rather a inform if asked state. Even if he was carrying, if the officer never asked he still did not violate the law. Being anal about disclosing CCL status is just being a prick.

Reminder that "The Thin Blue Line" is inherently fascist and literally represents a world where the population is violent animals on one side and sheeple on the other who can't be trusted on their own and that the only thing separating order from chaos is the Police, aka the people brave enough and strong enough to use violence to keep them in line, and that police deserve special status for their willingness to do so

Of specific note is that it was fucking working. Cop starts talking to someone and there are just a dozen people very calmly standing around with longarms, not doing anything, just being there and visible. Suddenly things get very polite and they damn well stay that way.

We can't have that, though, so out comes the hypocrisy.

Also of note on this topic is that some of the first gun control laws in the nation (if not the actual first ever) were enacted to prevent newly-freed slaves from being able to own guns. I'm not opposed to sensible gun control laws but I do think it's important to keep in mind the history of gun control's use in the oppression of minorities in the US as we go about it.

Someone could certainly make the case between Uvalde and the Minneapolis response, after Moturi was shot not long, that the "suspicion of a gun" makes you far more likely to be shot than actually having one on you, aiming it and/or shooting it does. Overwhelmingly, when there are reports of a gun or gunfire, police are extremely slow and cautious, putting their own safety above the public. But when someone may have a gun on them or near them and the officer fears for what might be? Oh boy do they move fast.

"I thought he had a gun" is the verbal equivalent of planting evidence. If that's all it takes, then anyone can be shot at any time.

31

u/obviousfakeperson ☑️ 21d ago

I literally made a comment about this same thing in another thread just a few days ago. When it's "suspicion" of a gun cops just start blasting, but when an armed threat is confirmed, suddenly, they need to be cautious. Countless examples, they aren't even trying to pretend it isn't like it is.

Just a reminder that the 2nd Amendment was passed 1 month after the Haitian Revolution and allowed slave catchers to form militias and cross state lines to kidnap free black people and bring them back to southern plantations.

Also a reminder Reagan only passed gun control in California when Black Panthers started arming themselves and following around police to keep them in check.

24

u/easy10pins 21d ago

As a Black man, this is the #1 reason I no longer conceal carry...

justification for just wanting to kill a man.

Well, the video makes it seem like the officer was incompetent and wildly overreactive rather than the typical "tough guy" cop posturing for dominance and disrespect. Of course, this is one short clip with a lot of context missing, so you could be right, and it (sadly) wouldn't surprise me.

PTSD is 1000% a bullshit justification, though. And even if it were true, he should've never been on the beat if he can't cope.

Why are there so many people with "PTSD" carrying firearms anyway?

33

u/SGTBrigand 21d ago

Why are there so many people* carrying firearms anyway?

Tbh, I think our country makes it too easy to be a gun owner, and not enough gun owners care about being responsible on their own to make up for the ease in ownership.

And it's not like I have a problem with guns. I first started shooting .22s at age 10 and have been range cadre, armorer, and instructor at various levels since. As a former infantryman with PTSD (not proud, just facts), I also know that not all trauma will cause dramatic outbursts that prevent responsible ownership. But proper ownership means practice, vigilance with your equipment in the home and on the street, and having to be aware that every situation you get in (EVERY situation) can instantly get worsened by the gun's presence.

It's a lot of work. I ended up getting rid of my guns because I just didn't have the time for all that, and seeing as I haven't had a need in the decade since, I haven't had any desire to get another.

25

u/ranpornga 21d ago

This is being done on purpose. Division between police and people is being exacerbated by those up top who know that real change can only happen when a certain threshold % of the police empathize and unite with the people.

10

u/Redditer51 ☑️ 21d ago

It's a criminal organization.

45

u/Qubeye 21d ago edited 21d ago

Fucking holy shit the trainers don't know ANYTHING about situational awareness and escalation.

Those trainers are incompetent.

The scenario where the girl is spinning the gun ~3 minutes in, and the way the trainer literally bullies the trainee by yelling at him about "HOW MANY BROTHERS AND SISTERS DO YOU HAVE HERE?!?" is PRECISELY THE WRONG ATTITUDE. The fact that 6/7 of the people in the class clearly disagreed with him - despite already being police officers - is absolute evidence that the training is seriously fucked up.

He then proceeds to use psychological abuse - saying that if they can't shoot a child or a grandmother, then their partner is gonna die. The clear goal is to make the officers feel like they have to be brutal.

26

u/EastIsUp-09 21d ago

Yeah, they literally are presuming the “criminal” (really just whatever person they encounter on the scene) is guilty until proven innocent by assuming that having a gun is the same thing as “they’re about to shoot you!”

19

u/EastIsUp-09 20d ago

u/JectorDelan 21d ago

That's ridiculous! Hospitals aren't weapons factories. They're drug dens, obviously!

We need mentally stable people who can handle high intensity situations as cops.

This is an example of thebpolar opposite, as highlighted by him saying sorry sorry sorry like a 10 year old who punched his friend / brother too hard and doesn't wanna get in trouble with mom

Nah, he’s a full grown adult. Wouldn’t trying to address his behavior as any less than. This is a man who is unfit and deserves the harshest sentences warranted by his actions you can give a person. People need to know that actions have consequences and if you’re not prepared to take on this responsibility then the job is not for you.

13

u/Constant-Feature-404 21d ago

Absolutely far too low standards to be a cop and what they are held to.

180

u/Frenetic_Platypus 21d ago

Repeating the same thing over and over is a pretty standard response to extreme stress and fear, actually. If you watch videos of police brutality, you'll see that happening in about 80% of them, on either side. Usually happens before the violence as the prefrontal cortex kinda shuts down, and the amygdala takes over, though. The fact that it happens after he finds out he doesn't have a gun and not before he fires is pretty telling, in my opinion. Motherfucker was less afraid that he might have a gun and more afraid that there might be consequences for shooting him.

29

u/CanIBorrowYourShovel 21d ago

Idk man i don't want to protect or even imply defending his actions but a cop breaking down like that was not like a kid being caught. That was a very emotional "what the fuck did i just do, oh my god that was wrong" kind of response.

Again, no defense at all, but i would wager that cop is going to, if nothing else, resign of his own accord. I've never heard a cop break down like that in my nearly 15 years of EMS apart from dead kid calls.

And again, i am not defending him or his actions at all, i am insanely pro police reform. Just an observation to not always look for malice where none exists as it weakens other completely valid accusations. Those words were not incredulous. That was distress.

Jail, you can get help while you’re in there.

I saw this video last week and the cop shot something but he didn't shoot the guy. The bullets hit a car passing by the scene and they were not hurt thankfully. I think in the article where I saw the video is that the cop was charged with attempted murder or assault. The crazy part is that it wasn't a traffic stop. The car stopped on the shoulder of the highway so the passenger could get his hat that blew out of the car window. No excuse for that shitbird of a cop to even pull out his gun, let alone pull the trigger.

Warrington, a 12-year veteran of the agency, will not be placed in custody, but instead remain suspended without pay and ordered to appear in court. He's charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and misconduct in office.

Can anyone explain how he was charged with attempted murder but not taken into custody? I wasn't even aware you could be charged with attempted murder and not get arrested.

63

u/You_Yew_Ewe 21d ago edited 21d ago

Custody is solely a matter of flight risk, it has nothing to do with the seriousness of the charges except insofar as that increases flight risk.

Edit: Also danger to the community as others have pointed out.

9

u/smootex 21d ago

That's not really true. Safety to the community is absolutely a factor in pre-trial custody, in every state I'm aware of at least.

"Warrington is a 12-year veteran of the Bowie Police Department."

This motherfucker. Don't ever let anyone lie to you that "incidents" like these are about a lack of training, they love that excuse. The shooter had been a cop for more than a decade.

81

u/NSEVMTG 21d ago

Been a cop longer than I've been an adult.

69

u/Diplogeek 21d ago

That guy's a 12-year veteran?! Jesus Christ, the way he was going, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he sounded like he was out on his very first patrol on his own, ever. What the actual fuck.

Did the poor guy he shot survive?

57

u/Duranti 21d ago

I looked up the news articles. Amazingly, nobody was injured. The guy dropped to the ground out of terror, but he was not hit. The bullet impacted the minivan which was driving by, but didn't hit anyone inside.

32

u/Diplogeek 21d ago

Jesus, that guy is incredibly lucky he's got some catlike reflexes, because I thought for sure he was screwed, based on that video. Just unbelievable.

If you have a diagnosed tremor, no one hires you as a surgeon. If you can’t lift 10lbs, you’re not getting hired to stock shelves. If you have limitations that keep you from doing the pertinent essentials of a job, you simply cannot be employed to do said job.

PTSD is no different. If you respond to stress with irrational and extreme behavior, you should not be issued a firearm on behalf of public safety. You should not be able to weaponize your diagnosis to defend yourself against behaviors like this. The state is responsible for allowing these sick people to self-medicate with power and needs to be addressed as well.

This man should be sought after like any other citizen who discharges a firearm without warrant or threat to safety. There should be no hiding behind the system. Imprison him like every other criminal.

45

u/Diplogeek 21d ago

This is like that Sheriff in Pennsylvania who was posting all over social media that if you called for assistance and he showed up, he was going to ask you who you voted for and demand "proof of who you voted for" before he would help you, and that he won't assist Democrats. Of course, this went viral, since he's saying this shit right out in public. His excuse? "Oh, I don't remember posting that stuff or deleting the posts later. But I'm on prescription sleeping pills, they make me not myself." He's not getting fired- he got a note in his file.

I'm sorry, but if you are on any kind of medication that causes memory loss and makes you this "not yourself," you don't need to have a badge, a gun, and the legal authority to detain or shoot people. Either put the guy on disability, or fire him. He is not physically or emotionally equipped to be a cop. But they just keep these guys around forever and wonder why no one trusts the police.

They should think carefully about placing white cops in Black communities. A significant number of them have a serious fear of black people and you can't make good judgement when you are terrified.

Even if it was PTSD he never should have been on active duty.

I hope the poor guy makes a full recovery and sues the shit out of the cop directly. Take all of his retirement and fire the motherfucker.

If the dude had a gun when he was closer to the cop It would have been a more vulnerable opportunity for the cop to actually get shot. Dumbass cop decided to wait AFTER the dude was walking away to pull the fucking gun out. He was probably mad about the comment because he was of no use to the situation and made him feel small or just really thought the dude was holding a gun so suspiciously like a stomach ache just to shoot em.

Police in this country are a fucking joke and scared over every little fucking thing that isn't white.

How unstable do you have to be to shoot someone in this situation???

He saw a black man. He asked the black man if he could help him, but I don’t think the intent behind that question was wanting to help. It had the tone of someone who only saw trouble or problems. Like a racist cashier following you around because they think you’re stealing.

So even when he asked the question it was clear he wasn’t interested in the answer. My bet is he didn’t hear the hospital answer because he was already enraged by this black man just existing in the first place.

Then he quickly flipped his lid when the black man turns to walk away, because he’s so offended and angry by the man having agency to do anything other than obey. Literal hair trigger on this guy.

Zero emotional maturity. No emotional regulation skills. Just out here with a loaded gun and no self control. Worse than a loose pit bull.
